Poston Butte Golf Club
About
Located just southeast of Phoenix in the town of Florence, Poston Butte Golf Club offers some of the most affordable golf in the area. The course has desert attributes but the best part about its design is that it is more forgiving than some of the overgrown desert courses found in north Scottsdale. The golf course features 49 sand traps strategically placed around the landing zones and greensides and water comes into play on two holes. It is generally a player-friendly layout though with wide fairways and ample room off the tees. The par-3 17th is the signature hole, which is known for its challenging island green. Poston Butte also offers a double-ended, targeted grass range and a short game area.

A distant gem!
Although I live in Tucson and its an hour and 30 minute drive, I visit Poston Butte multiple times each year because it’s a beautiful course, great challenge and friendly staff.
Bring Bug Spray!
Mosquitos were so bad we came in off #5 and went to the grocery store to buy bug spray. Pro shop did not have any and didn’t warn us about how bad it was. Multiple other groups came in as well. Otherwise it’s a nicely maintained course and semi challenging. Likely won’t return, given location.
Worth the drive
Staff friendly, course in very good shape. Only issue was for some reason they did not pair up any twosomes or singles. Back 9 slowed considerably due to this.
Excellent for all skill levels
This course is a great layout. It plays well for all levels of golfers based on the available tees. Fairways are wide but with well placed bunkers. It offers all the shots during the course of the game with long par 4's that require long iron shots,, from a drive-able par 4, to a short island green par 3. The range and practice area are top notch. I've played this course 6 times, at all times of the year, and the course condition is always great. Level tee boxes and very well kept greens. We played just a few weeks after the greens were punched, and they were already playable.
Disappointing experience
Course had been aerated recently with perhaps the worst equipment available! Massive holes filled most fairways and where there were not big holes, grass clippings were in mounds. Starter (if you can call him that) didn’t provide any help, such as pin position. And the worst thing was the mosquitoes!! Can’t you spray? Billed as the 14th best course in Arizona. Not quite.
Good Challenge
2nd time playing here. Both times the course has been in great condition. It usually costs more than your average course but complimentary range balls and great course condition makes up for it. Plays long, fairways are decent width but not "wide open" with mostly playable desert on both sides, So don't let your ego talk you into playing the back tees or it may reflect in your score. A good amount of sand traps, also. Bottom line, this is a very well maintained course that will offer intermediate and better golfers a challenge. Beginners could see a long day. It is worth the drive and above average fees (for being out in the sticks).
Nice course but ridiculous prices at concession
We enjoyed the golf course. I was however disappointed in the prices at concession. Typical AZ summer day as it was 105 and sunny. Covid obviously stops the courses from placing coolers out for water (understandable). They charged $3 a bottle for water. We try to adhere to requests for no outside beverages at most courses. We ended up spending $32 for two of us on water. The past 2 courses actually gave water out at turn and before round for free. Realize this isn’t a huge deal but unfortunately will cause me to go somewhere else or break rules and take a cooler with me.
Even with the so called COVID pandemic, the course had ball washers and drinking fountains. Greens were just punched a few weeks prior and were in good condition. Excellent lay out. A lot of character. Fairways wide and easy to hit. Greens very large and some undulations. Driving range balls included with fee. Get the course yardage book. Also, add an extra club to your approach to the green as some of them are elevated enough to warrant the added yardage.
Played the white/red tees to match my game and shot 77.
Bunkers are deep. But easily avoided. Was only in one on 16.
+110 degrees AZ enjoyable
Even tho they were “plugging” the fairways , Still great to play in the late morning
Greens were in good shape. Staff was nice. The rough was pretty shaggy and deep, needs to be trimmed a bit.
Slow play!
The round took over 5 hours to play. Extremely slow play. No excuse for this. The pace of play over shadowed the course. Always have a great tome with family on this course but a round over 5 hours is unacceptable.
Honestly, it sounds like you just caught the course at the absolute worst time of the year. I would argue this description is true for almost every single course in AZ at this time of year. Punched greens, punched fairways, and mosquitoes. I know "beating the heat" and getting out early in AZ is always what people want to do, but when you do, you play with the mosquitoes because they too beat the heat! You should really give the course another play!
