San Tan Highlands
About
San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

HORRIBLE PACE
I was disappointed with my experience at San Tan Highlands Golf Club. The course itself has potential, but the overall pace of play was terrible with no marshal on the course to help keep groups moving. There was also no beverage cart after noon, which was frustrating, especially during the Arizona heat. Between the slow pace and lack of on-course service, the round took much longer than it should have. I hope management addresses these issues because they would make a big difference in the overall experience.
Two distinguished nine holes
Challenging two different types of nine holes. Great course to test my golf skills - uneven fairways with short grass, tough reading greens, some roughs!
Except a slow speed of a few groups in front, good value to try.
Ok track, nice views
Friendly fairways, wide and seemed mostly to slant back toward middle on both sides. Middle of alot of fairways were in bad shape however, lacking grass. Greens were decent, medium size and was even able to leave a divot if your approach landed. Course winds through residential streets more than any course I’ve played. Back 9 a little more interesting than front. Nice views throughout. If I lived closer I might play again but for a 45min drive each way probably not.
not worth what they're charging
They're charging premium prices for an average course at best. The back nine is interesting, but the front nine is as boring as it gets. Over half of the fairways were browned out and/or aerated, and the best hole on the course is hitting off of mat instead of grass. Drive 15 minutes further south to Poston Butte for a much better value.
Beware, they’ll steal from you
I am writing this to warn others: these guys want to get into your wallet. I played on Saturday, May 30th (12:10 PM tee time). the course was empty.. aside from
The one slow group in front of us.
We booked a foursome ($35 per person) but my mother-in-law opted to spectate rather than play. We paid the $30 rider fee for her to sit in the cart, yet a few days later, I was hit with an additional $35 "no-show" fee by GolfNow apparently submitted by this course.
When I reached out to "Seth" in management to explain the situation—that we had already paid for her spot, the course was empty, and there was zero impact on their tee sheet—he couldn't have cared less. They are shamelessly milking patrons for every cent they can get.
The rest of the experience was trash.
The Range: $7 for a “small”
Bucket. It was 12-15 golf balls with virtually no dimples .. you know the type.
The Food: Cold, nasty hot dogs served at the turn
The Service: non existent.
The course: seen better days
I even tipped the cart staff $5 for walking out of the cart barn when we finished the round.. but that was the last dollar this place will ever get from me. I didnt Know they were going to steal $35 without a care in the world.. still just baffled by the lack of service to a paying customer. I’ll never come back.
Snuck in a round
Had a chance to sneak in a quick round. San Tan Highlands didn't disappoint. It's a track close to home so I could get out and play in 3 hours! No breeze today, which can add strokes quickly to a scorecard! Big bonus - 3rd shot into 18 left a 3-footer which was drained for a closing birdie!
Very rough
The course is in very rough shape. Greens are pretty good but speed is inconsistent. The fairways have lots of bare spots and the areas around the greens have no grass. I expect better conditions!
Doing some normal prep
Aerification on every hole made play pretty tough. Certainly understandable for future course conditions, but didn’t help today. Greens were fair and rolled well. Tee boxes were aplenty and mostly level. Course was overall dry. Bathrooms and pro shop amenities were decent. Liked the layout a lot with a nice mix of challenges and scenery. Will return after the turf has recovered.
Not in good shape
The pace of play is typically slow. Even for this time of year, the course is in poor condition.
