October bonus
We played Holywell recently and it was the first time that I had played the course for a couple of years. It is a favourite of mine and one that I would recommend to anyone who is in this neck of the woods.
The welcome in the pro shop was, and always has been, one of the friendliest that you will come across. It makes such a difference when you are met by a smile from someone who is passionate about their course and about wanting to ensure that you have a great experience. The members we encountered were also friendly and playing briskly.
The course itself is situated quite high up and there are lovely views to enjoy. The first 9 holes has some long par 4's and some testing par 3's. It is October and so you may struggle to reach the par 4's because the ball doesn't roll much and also because it may get intercepted by one of several hundred sheep that graze the fairways quite contentedly.
The back 9 is a famed 'inland links' course with contours laid down from mining activity in byegone centuries. There are bumps, hollows and hummocks, so plenty of testing lies. The 10th is a glorious par 5 and a real highlight- the best 10th hole in North Wales? On the back 9 we have little in the way of semi rough- here, close-mown grass give way to many gorse thickets that line the fairways so staying on the short stuff is really at a premium. Keep your eyes open for the beautiful small birds that have a preference for a gorse lifestyle.
In summary, you can't go wrong at this understated coures that gives you great enjoyment at exceptional value.
Holywell 1st timer
Great course, a little tight for me as a high handicapper, would have benefitted from a detailed course guide with club choice.
Greens were excellent.
Would definitely return for another round or two.
Great parkland course
I found the pro shop and the clubhouse staff to be extremely friendly the course was great fun and had some quirky holes it was interesting to see the sheep grazing on the fairways but it was obvious they were used to people as they soon moved away when you moved to the Tee, however just be careful of the sheep doo.
We all had a fantastic day and will definitely return, great course great value for a money.
Challenging!
I really enjoyed this course but it's tough and playing longer than the yardage. Some of the fairways are very narrow.
Good value golf
A good golf course which never gets too busy.
Only downsides are sheep crap everywhere and greens a bit slow.
Interesting moorland course
Played the course in early July 21. Found it to be compact with narrow fairways on some holes. Good mix of par threes, fours and fives. Unusually, the course seems to be managed by grazing sheep in places and one needs to be aware of sheep pooh! There are few bunkers and the greens were quicker than I was used to so some adjustments to chips and putts were required. Overall, a good golfing experience especially for the price paid via the Golf Now website. Facilities were fine and staff in the pro’s shop we’re very welcoming. Will play again soon. Highly recommended course in a lovely setting.
Sunny Wales
The course is nice and dry . Great selection of holes but unfortunately some of the fairways had not been mowed and the greens we not in great condition today. It’s a shame because I do like the course but I have to be honest it was not at it’s best today
Lovely course.
Amazing course to play will definitely be back in the summer as a couple of holes were closed due to being a bit to wet so would like to play the full 18, but that didn't bother us we had a great round. Very Friendly staff.
Hidden Gem . Eye candy
Wonderful course superbly set out .Each hole had it own challenge .The course is hilly and if you struggle walking a buggy is recommended . Staff and fellow golfers were very friendly .Looking forward to play here again soon
Smashing course!
First time I have played this course and was really impressed. The natural hazards (sheep!) were an interesting addition. The course was in great condition and provided a stiff test due to some tight fairways. The ‘road’ hole at the end was a real nerve jangler and a fantastic way to conclude the round. Off the course all the staff were really friendly and helpful as were any members we met on the way round. All in all a really enjoyable experience that I would recommend to golfers beyond absolute beginners.
Enjoyable track
Great value for money on the hot deal. Some really nice holes with a links feel. The back 9 is best as the front has a few average holes (4-6) in a field with a different feel. The back 9 has a couple of string par5s, a characterful par 3 15th and a strong finishing hole. Just mind the sheep poop!
What a beautiful course!
Upon on arrival to the club shop I was warmly welcomed and explained the layout of the course. This course itself was in an immaculate condition greens superb. The fairways were presented very well and the rough was well rough. I would recommend this course to anyone it played very well with being in the correct position more important than just hitting it long.
What a cracker
Spotted this course from the A55 coming home from Llandudno so looked it up, read the reviews then booked a hot deal @£16 each. What a great little course this is with some really interesting holes and when you get to the 18th and have to fire one across the main road it’s quite a knee knocker. In spite of being up on the hills it’s very flat so easy walking and the greens all run really well. I’ll definitely be going back now I know where not to hit my shots. The welcome we received was great too. Highly recommend this course if you’re in the area and don’t mind sharing your day with the sheep. Loved it.
Heathland Course
Excellent course in great condition for time of year, true fast greens , a delight to play
Real gem
I have always been meaning to play here & finally decided to give it a go, all I can say is I am disappointed... that I haven’t played it sooner. This course was a real gem, quaint & surprisingly really cute (feel sick say that but it really is). I was driving through the middle of a village when 2 large fields open up one on either side of the road and I realised the building just off the road is the club house. The pro was really helpful told me where the first hole was and any other issues that may cause a problem. The course itself is really open, well maintained and he sheep give it real character, most holes had small greens but great pin positions making it difficult if you miss them to make par as I found out. There are a few tee shots you have to play over roads which was a tad unnerving, especially as the 18th goes over the main road, but in all honesty I really enjoyed this course and can’t wait to go back again and again and again, just ashame it is too far away for me to play it weekly.
