Delta Hotels by Marriott St Pierre Country Club - Mathern Course

Course in good condition for December, great value for a tenner!

I've played the Mathern in the summer and loved it, I thought I'd give it a try in the winter. It's still great. The way it's looked after means that even in the winter the greens roll true, and good lies are easy to find. The drainage must be good because the parts of the course that I expected to be like bogs due to finding them soft in summer, are still playable. My drives and approach shots were plugging, but finding decent preferred lies was easy. Testament to the great green keeping. The course Marshall apologised that we'd not been told we needed winter wheels on our trolleys, but the pro shop sorted us out nice and quick.

Compared with several local courses played in last few weeks the course was not on Tee mats (though some Tees were forward of usual position. Only the 7th fairway was boggy to one side. The rest were in superb condition as usual. Greens were in great shape. The water hazards were flowing well and making ball retrieval without a long tool impossible. It was a great round.

Great course. Don’t be fooled by the par 69. Loads of 180-200 yd par 3s! Well maintained and challenging with rivers meandering through the course to make it interesting. £10 hot deal was a bargain.

It was a nice course but it was boggy in places It was a little bit busy but I think that had something to do with the old course being closed

The course was in good condition especially the greens and this was despite the amount of the aim we had in the previous week

Yes it was damp in certain parts of the course but this did not distract from the experience.

All in all a very enjoyable day.

Played as a three ball, teeing off just after 3. After 5! Holes we ran into two groups on the tee… where we were told they had been waiting for 20 mins. It took until 13 for the pace to return to somewhat normal. Pretty poor marshalling in my opinion. Several of the tee boxes were bare… as several greens well used and badly repaired. That coupled with several beer cans, bottle tools left scattered around the course left us disappointed.

Great course, great pace, really nice and informative staff and a bargain to boot!

Greens in excellent condition as was the course. Tight in places but a joy to play on !

Course was in great condition and we enjoyed a brilliant round. The greens and fairways were in excellent condition. Can’t fault it

Very friendly marshall and staff at the course set the tone for an enjoyable round.

Not particularly long but plenty of hazards and trees mean accuracy is required to increase scoring chances - though I wouldn’t say it was a particularly tight course overall and many holes allow you to get away with spraying it about a bit. Most challenging holes were probably the par 3s, which need a long iron or even hybrid in for the most. Greens were relatively flat and average pace.

A really good course for the price paid and would certainly like another crack.

We played in heavy rain and downpour and the course drained well! It was well maintained!

Would like to play on a sunny day next time!
