Marriott St Pierre Country Club - Mathern Course
Fantastic Value - Long Course - Challenging holes - Great Clubhouse
Nice course, shame about the management of who plays
It was the second time on the Mathern after playing the old course previous. We started off behind a 5-ball and when the 2-ball behind us asked the starter from the other course to tell them they needed to split up, he proceeded wrongly to tell the 5-ball it was us who had complained. Once they had split into a 2 & 3-ball, it was obvious they had no idea how to conduct themselves on a golf course; they rolled their trollies over the greens and held everyone up without a thought for calling us through. So, if you want to play the Mathern course, be aware that while the course is not bad at all, the chances are it will take you 5 hours as we a 2-ball did to get round because of the lack of course marshalling and the number of non-golfers allowed on the course. With no regard for the delay they caused behind with 2 more tee times stacked up behind us. Moreover, the odd bottle of beer left on the fairway as we did. In summary, it was disappointing, and a shame the professional shop did not brief visitors as to the etiquette and rules. It may have avoided such an issues for genuine golfers and visitors .
Great Course
Great Course and fantasic price of £15 for the mathern course
Big disappointment
15 Of us !! On tee at second par 3 ( hole 4 or 5 ) and 4 on the green . Absolutely tortuous…. We left after ninth hole
Poor experience
Overbooked tee times groups of 8 playing the same hole 3 groups waiting behind us, the lad playing on his own infront of my group wasn’t allowed to play through the group of 8 infront of him absolute shambles sat waiting almost 29 minutes to tee off between holes
Course conditions
Course conditions were not good, no wonder this was only £20. There were water logged greens and fairways taking all the speed out of the ball. Won't be rushing back.
Nice layout, but needs maintaining...
Played this course with a friend and although we enjoyed the round, and the course setting, some of the the tee boxes weren't in the best of condition, and all of the greens needed alot of work as well. Greens were patchy, and bobbly, and the test of the course felt like it needed some maintenence.
It hasn't put me off playing again, but I'll be aware of all of this if we ever book again.
Round ruined by mistake in booking and rude club member
We arrived 30 mins before tee off (after traveling for an hour to get there) to be told our booking was cancelled as the Mathern course was closed, to be fair to the staff they did say we would be refunded but then said they can "squeeze" us into the Old course... we were to find out that squeeze was indeed literal and we had to rush every hole as we were essentially jammed between two tee times which for me not being fully able bodied was a challenge from the moment we tee'd off. The course wasntbin great condition, it was difficult to distinguish the fairway from the ruff in large parts and the course and greens were extremely soft underfoot. Long story short we decided to call it a day at the 9th as it wasn't an enjoyable round and we headed to the car where we encountered the most entitled, rude club member I've ever come across.
We were parked in a disabled bay (with my badge displayed ofcourse) and whilst we were loading the club back into the car this member approached us and said "that's a disabled bay mind, you people just come in and park whenever you want". My friend explained that we were aware it was a disabled bay and that my badge was disabled, he then questioned who's badge it was and followed that with "you sure it's yours, you don't look disabled". Again we explained it was my badge and this lovely gentleman then walked off and said to my friend " something to do with his weight isit, he could do with losing a bit"... we literally couldn't believe what he said!
We had planned on using the club for lunch etc but this member put us off completely and we packed up and headed elsewhere... I've emailed the club as I was so appalled but have yet to receive a response unfortunately
Experience spoilt completely by club member and booking cockup
We booked a four ball on the Mathern only to get there and be told the course was closed after we'd driven best part of an hour to get to the course, to the credit of the staff they did manage to get us a tee off on the Old course but this seemed as if we were rushed in between other people teeing off so we couldn't really enjoy our game as we had to rush every single hole which just wasn't enjoyable, add that to the fact we were walking and the course was absolutely sodden so we were slipping all over the place whilst walking the course. We booked an 18 but called it a day at 9 as the experience just wasn't enjoyable. We then headed back to the car (I drove us down) which was parked in the disabled bay with my blue badge in the window to be challenged by a club member as to why we thought it was ok to be parked in a disabled bay, when I explained I had my badge displayed and I was entitled to park there l, this very rude gentlemen proceeded to say (you don't look disabled, my friend said to him that we were doing nothing wrong and that I shouldn't have to explain why I have my badge which was met with "probably to do with his size, wouldn't hurt him to lose a bit of weight"... I was a bit taken back to be honest as I genuinely couldn't believe what I'd heard. We had intended on going into the club to see what the lunch options were but Needless to say we piled our stuff into the car double quick after the encounter with the club member and went elsewhere.
I'm sure it's a great course to play when allowed to play properly but what started as an unfortunate error in finding out the course we'd booked was closed turned out to be the worst experience myself and my group have had at any club. To me Members are a presentation of the club and that members attitude was disgusting!
Enjoyable
All very enjoyable except on Hole 6 there are no red stakes to indicate water (a large stream) which can easily be rectified. Please can this be corrected asap ?
Grass
very long in the rough second cuts, fairways and greens. Its was a shame as it made it quite hard work and difficult to find balls just about anywhere.
