Inconsiderate players

Played a round for the first time on the roman roads course, an absolute stunning location and great course, How ever!!!!! It's down to other people playing golf. So unprofessional. What i want was a nice calm chill out day with my father in law, on what I thought would be a great day out.

Well first of all the ground keepers couldn't care less whether you were driving or putting, they had to keep cutting the grass regardless. They could at least pause for two minutes to acknowledge you were there. Then we had four ball in front of us taking 2 shots each at the start of each hole. Guessing they were beginners at golf, when I approached they, they replied " what you gonna do about it VISTOR!!" Im Guessing they were members. While playing around if they hit there ball onto the hole were playing they had no consideration that you had priority, don't get me wrong we all duff shots time to time but don't intrude on someone else's game. So in a nutshell what I'm saying is could it of been a one of experience or is it like that all the time. I don't know. What I do know is that to be honest I won't play there again. There are alot lot of great courses around the area were golfers do respect the game. Hopefully no one experiences the day we had if your keen golfers.

Excellent

All these bad reviews must have been when someone’s had a bad round…….

Only fault I could find was not much sand in some bunkers which isn’t really the end of the world. It was in absolutely fantastic condition! Greens were rapid and had a lovely role on them, fairways are like carpets and cut with a bright diamond pattern that looked stunning, tees are level, rough is nicely cut and the surrounds areas are tidy.

Looking forward to seeing what the 2010 course has to offer if this was very good.

Communication issues

Tee off was booked for 810 through golf now, golf now didn’t inform Celtic manor about our arrival. We turned up and Celtic manor couldn’t find us on the system, we were told to head to the first tee where they squeezed us in with a one ball on his tee time. We were told to push in front of other groups who werent happy as some were members.

Roman Road, Celtic Manor, Newport

Fantastically well manicured course (Roman Road) with so many interesting and challenging holes! 10th tee has great views; before taking 2nd shot on 10, go up and have a look at the red stake hazard you need to carry to find the green.

Too Slow

Beautiful course, great staff and facilities and would play again but the pace was so slow we could not finish our round, we managed 14 holes in 4.15 minutes with hold ups on evert Tee & Green and no Marshalls to speed things up, shame as everything else perfect.

Maybe spread tee times a little wider.

Spring is here

After a couple of weeks of sunshine the course was in very good condition. Unfortunately they had tined the greens a couple of weeks ago and sanded this week. The greens were still very good but as a lower handicap player those putting bobbles made the difference between a very good round and a great round. Being 1st off the tee meant we made our own pace and finished easily within 4 hours despite my sons 4 list balls.

Cracking course in the winter

Booked this on a hot deal and despite the frosty conditions, had a great day playing. The staff were brilliant, course in great nick despite the time of year and we even managed to win a free round via the par 3 comp.

Can't recommend enough for winter golf, will definitely be booking again before spring!

Shouldn’t have been open.

Great course in the summer, love playing there but played a couple days ago and was almost unplayable, an absolute bog site, greens were immaculate as usual but fairways were just slosh, bunkers were full of water so much so that if you found a bunker with a shot it was a lost ball, they don't shut the course when conditions are terrible due to greed, i get the uk winters are terrible and courses suffer but most will just shut the course and refund where as the celtic manor would open in a blizzard just to avoid giving a refund. And after all that you’ll need a mortgage to buy anything there and will be stuck behind hackers for a 6 hour round, don’t believe the hype.

Would never play again

The course was average and I have played much nice courses in the area and would have expected more from such a well known resort.

We booked 2 buggies because 2 players were disabled and 2 have knee injuries. We were told that we could drive on the rough but not on the fairways and that the buggy might stop due to the gps. We tried several times to drive on the rough but the buggy would just stop and we would have to reverse .

After 5 holes I was in pain and decided that if my ball landed too far from the path I would just have to leave it as I was unable to carry on. On several greens the buggy path was too far from the greens so I was unable to play and asked someone to pick my ball up.

I have played a variety of courses and have always been able to drive in the rough

Shocking

Staff very friendly, greens nice for winter.

That's where it ends!! Absolutely unplayable fairways!! Disgraceful that it was even open.

Should have understood the hidden warning on the start box "feel free to tee it up on the fairways!"

Really disappointed as played this course in the summer and it is stunning. Really don't understand why it's open when it's this bad. Lost 6 balls on the fairways!! Whole ball plugs.

Do Not Play In Winter- Appalling

We played the Roman Road in February & the course should have been shut, it was unplayable. There hadn’t been any significant rainfall for days, but despite this, the course was very wet. Every fairway was like a swamp & hadn’t been mowed or maintained for months based on the grass growth. Every part of the course was so wet that your ball became plugged and could not be found. Bunkers were in a terrible state and have no sand in them at all. It appeared that the course has been left to deteriorate and is getting no investment at all. Celtic Manor are quite literally robbing customers when charging to play in those conditions. There was no warning at all from staff that the course was in this condition and no offer of reimbursement when questioned.
