Shouldn’t have been open.
Great course in the summer, love playing there but played a couple days ago and was almost unplayable, an absolute bog site, greens were immaculate as usual but fairways were just slosh, bunkers were full of water so much so that if you found a bunker with a shot it was a lost ball, they don't shut the course when conditions are terrible due to greed, i get the uk winters are terrible and courses suffer but most will just shut the course and refund where as the celtic manor would open in a blizzard just to avoid giving a refund. And after all that you’ll need a mortgage to buy anything there and will be stuck behind hackers for a 6 hour round, don’t believe the hype.
Celtic day out .
We played as a four ball the greens were superb fast firm and rolling smoothly, all the staff were very friendly and helpful, I have played there many times and it never fails to impress great place for a day or two enjoying the wales countryside .
Would never play again
The course was average and I have played much nice courses in the area and would have expected more from such a well known resort.
We booked 2 buggies because 2 players were disabled and 2 have knee injuries. We were told that we could drive on the rough but not on the fairways and that the buggy might stop due to the gps. We tried several times to drive on the rough but the buggy would just stop and we would have to reverse .
After 5 holes I was in pain and decided that if my ball landed too far from the path I would just have to leave it as I was unable to carry on. On several greens the buggy path was too far from the greens so I was unable to play and asked someone to pick my ball up.
I have played a variety of courses and have always been able to drive in the rough
Kept open in awful conditions. Lost over 20 balls due to plugging. Will not play this course again.
Shocking
Staff very friendly, greens nice for winter.
That's where it ends!! Absolutely unplayable fairways!! Disgraceful that it was even open.
Should have understood the hidden warning on the start box "feel free to tee it up on the fairways!"
Really disappointed as played this course in the summer and it is stunning. Really don't understand why it's open when it's this bad. Lost 6 balls on the fairways!! Whole ball plugs.
Do Not Play In Winter- Appalling
We played the Roman Road in February & the course should have been shut, it was unplayable. There hadn’t been any significant rainfall for days, but despite this, the course was very wet. Every fairway was like a swamp & hadn’t been mowed or maintained for months based on the grass growth. Every part of the course was so wet that your ball became plugged and could not be found. Bunkers were in a terrible state and have no sand in them at all. It appeared that the course has been left to deteriorate and is getting no investment at all. Celtic Manor are quite literally robbing customers when charging to play in those conditions. There was no warning at all from staff that the course was in this condition and no offer of reimbursement when questioned.
Great looking course
Brilliant course just horrendously wet , in my opinion it probably shouldn’t have been open , nice layout of the course and couldn’t fault the greens but as for the rest the course fairways were very poor
Course waterlogged
The course should have been closed as it was waterlogged and unplayable. Only managed 9 holes.
Booked on website but at no point it was mentioned that the course was waterlogged.
It was a waste of money.
Great course layout
I enjoyed the course only bad thing was fairways were very bogey soon as ball landed it plugged once you got to green they were in great condition very fast but spot on I was a single player but 4 groups let me through which was good they was doing a challenge on one of par 3 which you paid £10 if you got on green you got a free game and if you got hole in one a 10 year membership would definitely play again but in summer
Boggy
Course was extremely wet due to recent heavy rain . Starter warned us that the greens were superb ( they were) but the fairways might plug - an understatement!
Lost a ball on first fairway - plugged somewhere in middle of fairway? Most courses would not be open with fairways squelching like this. My playing partner slipped over twice the first time got up with muddy back and elbow but second time slide down a slope was absolutely covered in mud from ankles to shoulders - left course at 10th green!
Did not do a great course justice being open when sensibly it should be closed.
A wast of time and money
The course was a quagmire it should have been closed.
I lost 4 balls on the fairway, 4 plugged balls. On the fairway! I would like to be reimbursed for the lost pro Vs.
Maybe in the summer time it would have been ok…
But it’s also £60 for a buggy….
