Birthday Championship
Beautiful fairways and very nicely presented greens throughout the course. Lovely Welsh sunshine and excellent views. Back nine was quite hilly and would best suit a buggy, but a good stretch with a decent trolley. We played the Montgomery course but the other courses looked also in fantastic shape…maybe next time!
Pleasant after-match facilities.
We’ll be returning!
Slow, overpriced, unsafe! See below
Not a healthy review on the whole! See below for good and bad
The bad:
• Nearly hit twice by range balls on the 9th (note I would upload photos of the ~30 balls in the middle of the fairway after a 8.30 tee time if the app would work properly). That range should be illegal! Pray faders of the ball hit slices with a wind assist instead if hitting in your direction, not that they may even be aware they're doing so with the blinding head on sunlight at that time. Let's not also mention the 18th green which also houses a very similar danger from the same range.
• £55 for a buggy that is restricted to cart paths made this a painful expierence. I walked more than my usual 6000 yard course and carried several different clubs for each shot. At times I couldn't even be bothered to walk back to the trek of a cart path for a club and as a result shot high.
• Took a lot longer than a usual round is an understatement with 5+ hours. That's two rounds of golf elsewhere sometimes. Poor course layout in my opinion!
The good:
• Bunkers good amount of sand,
• Greens good pace and true,
• Tee boxes flat, but patchey
• Challenging course with many undulations and tight greens
The course was a very good challenge, there are a lot of hills to walk up and down so I would recommend a buggy
Great round
Always challenging. Good course to play when it is dry enough. Can get rather water logged in the wet weather.
The greens are always fast. Large greens too. That’s always the thing to remember for this course.
Montgomery Course
Course was waterlogged!!! Should have worn wellies! Straight drives down the middle of the fairway only not able to find the ball as it was probably that deeply plugged! Found several other golf balls buried in the fairways.
Review
Very good course.
Can be quite tight in areas.
Don't be fooled by the overall distance of some holes.
Lots of challenges and traps.
Mixed feelings
Very excited playing Celtic manor for the first time, but the course was too wet and boggy to play even on a sunny Sunday, ground swallowing all balls off the tee, they should have cancelled and let us book another time when the course was playable
When The Heavens Open!
Played The Monty on the date of this review and it wasn’t a great experience. In fairness to the team in the pro shop they pre-emptied this by offering up options as to when we could end the round and rebook at certain rates but as we’d travelled we thought we’d just go for it! The amount of rain that has fallen and then fell on the day meant that fairways were really boggy and water had gathered on several greens! Our fault for not reverting to weather forecasts I suppose but if rain has fallen heavily pre a booking I’d probably give the resort a miss! We’ve played here when it’s dry and it’s great!
5 hours
Played on a tuesday late morning. Was obscenely slow, spent longer waiting for people than playing the course. People dont keep up with play in front. Waiting for people to finish the hole rather than when it's safe to.
Too many bunkers but at least have decent sand in.
New course set up makes an even longer loop to walk
Mr ratcliffe
Everything was great but buggies a bit pricey at £55 considering we played here about 8 weeks ago and they were £40.The increase is probably for the new course iPad fitted which works ok for 5 holes then it goes haywire
Celtic Manor - Montomerie
We had an excellent day. Great staff and facilities. The only slight grip was the pace of play as it took nearly 5 hours. I guess we should have been prepared for that. Also, it's a LONG walk, and many of the holes have a bit of a hike between green and next tee.
Nevertheless, a super experience, and great value for money. Would definitely visit again.
Very slow play
Love the course here but was pretty disappointed this time around. Greens were unbelievable. Pace of play was shocking and noticed a 2 ball had been allowed to go out separately, saw him having a moan in the shop.
Bunkers really let the course down and we’re all barely raked.
Get a buggy
It was a beautiful course and it’s a very challenging course but I would recommend getting a buggy because some tees are miles apart
Great round
A really interesting course with tricky greens! I would love to play this again!
Simply put amazing
Course was fantastic but if I had to try and pick at something it would be the gap between green to tee, being so hilly don’t make the same mistake I did and definitely get a buggy for this one
Montgomerie
First thing to mention is this course is not for those who want to carry and might struggle to get round. We used a buggy and it was still hard going. The undulations, and the distance from green to tee is ridiculous. The course was swapped around last year, original front 9 now the back 9. The walk from 9 to 10 alone could take you 10 minutes. Policy is to double up tee times, so 4 balls constantly. Buggy policy is you must stick to paths, resulting in parking buggy and walking to your shots with 3 clubs in hand. Some of the paths are a good distance from fairways. Pace of play was horrendous, took just under 3 hrs for 9. Course is quite short, very much a plotting course but in very good condition. Greens looked like they had been dressed in last week or so but very quick and great condition. In reality I think resort golf isn’t for me, but don’t be put off it’s your thing. Course was ok, not one to return to, but just take into account the layout and pace of play.
