Lost at times
Had issues with a couple pin placements. Fairways were hard to locate on several holes. A small layout on card would help. Loved course.
Preserve is in great shape
The overseeded fairways were lush. The ball sits up well. The greens were smooth and fairly quick, very fair. Bunkers were consistent and playable.
Elevations, plus
My husband and I are avid golfers and have golfed all over the U.S. AZ courses are unique in their own way. Saddlebrooke was out of the norm. Elevations galore. Beautiful course. Paid an excellent rate to play. So very worth it. WE WILL be back. If you golf, do it with someone who knows the course. It helps!
2 hour weather delay - they called to let us know we would tee off at 11:52. Arrived at 11:25 and told we were on the tee. When we asked why we hadn't been called to be told of the change, they suggested they can't call everyone. They told us they could change us to 12:15 by having the 12:15 group tee off now as they were already here. The women behind the counter were rude and condescending. The guys behind the counter were apologetic but offered no solutions.
At the turn, at about 2:00pm, the snack bar wasn't open to get a hot dog ( this was a Saturday) and we were told we couldn't get one in the restaurant. For such a "upscale" community, they certainly were far from. For the rate $24 on Golf Now, I might go back but not for full fare and certainly not if I wanted to impress anyone.
Mixed review
The course is definitely to be played. Greens a bit slow but rolling true. However, it didn't seem that they really care about players that don't belong to the community. There was no information in Golfnow.com that it was cart path only, no information about not having ANY food and beverage outlet (consider that you are in the middle of the mountain, teeing off at 12:15 with 48 degrees and you can't even get a cup of coffee). I played only 9 holes since the front nine took us close to 3 hours.
Very decent course
Not the best, but you will appreciate. Great views. Golf balls not provided at range, which to me immediately indicates that it is not a top of the line course
Wuarry
Great course, very challenging. Tee boxes are set up to challenge you for you handi cap. If it's Wendy, take extra balls
Fun layout, beautiful views, odd experience
Every course is different - I get that. Living in Arizona, your course choices are nearly endless. With that in mind, little things take courses off the "play list" with ease. Case in point: The Preserve. While the views are great and the course in very nice condition, two items detract from the experience. 1.) Cart-path only. The dreaded rule for any weekend golfer. The rule is unfortunate enough, but then our foursome got chastised by a ranger for being 20 minutes behind our pace coming off the 15th green. 20 minutes. For a foursome. With cart path only. Really? Yes, there was a threesome a full hole behind us closing in on us but they never caught us until the 18th hole approach. We finished exactly 20 minutes behind pace. We appreciate a good ranger doing his job, but maybe he didn't know it was cart path only? Maybe he didn't know we had already let a twosome play through and the threesome behind us hadn't caught us yet? I digress. 2.) It's MLK day and some business are closed. I guess that goes for this golf course as well. There was no drink/snack cart and the restaurant/snack window was closed at the clubhouse. If we hadn't had those bags of peanuts we might all still be out there... surviving on bugs and desert fauna. We got the impression this retirement community would rather not have visitors on the course. While I can't say the overall experience was negative, there are simply too many great choices out there to warrant a repeat visit. Perhaps that's just the way they want it. :-)
Challenging
Always a great time golfing there. You have to use your golfing wisdom or you will get into lots of trouble.
Beautiful Course
This was my first time playing the course and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was surprised to have to pay for warm up balls on the range, but other than that had a great day. As with all courses, but more so with this one, being familiar with the holes can be a great advantage. It's a very pretty course without any homes or other man made structures on several holes which only enhanced the course design.
Wonderful experience!
Everything went as planned, very easy process. The course was in pristine condition with a great restaurant where we had lunch. Very friendly staff. We teed off on time and completed the round in 3 1/2 hours!!! Wow! Can't wait to do it again in sunny AZ weather!
Scenic and challenging
My second time playing here; the first was a year ago so I did not recall most of the holes. Would be a definite benefit if the club provided GPS because the undulating terrain provides for a lot of blind shots and uncertain distance to landing areas that can yield unpleasant surprises. There were a few times when I hit too much club or unwittingly hit a shot in a bad spot. But great condition and beautiful golf course tucked away in the foothills of the mountains.
Saddlebrooke Gem
Don't waste your money on other courses. This is the one you want to play. It is semi-private with lots of pay by homeowners, but they understand pace of play and are polite and friendly to visitors. It is a bit of a trek to get to the course, but well worth it. On the downside, on Monday and Tuesday the restaurant is closed and there is limited beverage service on the course.
Slow Play
The Preserve is a nice, challenging course, but slow play has become a problem. We played the front 9 in less than 2 hours today, but got behind a very slow group on the back and it took almost 3 hours. We did not see a ranger all day.
nice course, but
nice course (lay out and upkeep) narrow fairways, challenging. got the feeling outsiders (non members) not wanted there. had a frost delay but were never told.
