close to home
The conditions of the course could be improved especially on the green for some holes. Generally speaking, this course is in better condition than what I've seen this last round. I expected to get better.
No carts, Delayed tee off, slow pace
11:36 tee time, teed off at 12:45. Only able to finish 15 holes due to darkness. There were no carts, which created some of that delay. Golfers who had later tee times or had walked on jumped ahead of groups with a tee time because they were walking and didn't have to wait for a cart. That created part of the delay. Then they send out fivesome after fivesome. There was no marshal or "ambassador" to tell the fivessomes to hit their 140 yard tee shots into the other fairway from the white tees instead of the blues. A very frustrating day. The guys and gal in the "starters shack" we're pleasant and very apologetic, but I got the impression this happens a lot. foursomes and more realistic tee times would be an improvement instead of cramming as many golfers on the course as you can.
Nice Golf Course
This golf course is average all around...staff was not friendly at all.
Golf Condition
Tee boxes & Greens were bad, Not worth $75.00 green fees.
There's other courses that are better and worth the $$.
Brookside #2 Nay
Played the Blues (69.1/121/6025) with RGM2525 on a teeoff.com special for $19.99 in 4H, 10M, teeing off just before noon. We played behind a 5some, so it seemed slower than it actually was. The weather was 80ish and humid with a little breeze.
First time I have played this old school, shorter, fun, parkland style course with small greens. The vast majority of the holes are straight or relatively straight, no doglegs on this design that features MANY short par 4's. Strange design for a par 70 in that the front 9 has eight par 4's and one par 3. I have never played a regulation course that I did not play a par 5 until the 11th hole? The back has two par 5's, three par 3's and four par 4's, I found it the more interesting of the 9's.
Many holes have either a wash or OB on one or both sides, yet it did not feel that tight, even with many mature trees that overhang the fairways. It reminded me of the course I grew up playing back in N.C. where I could spray the ball off the tee and if I missed in the right places, still have a short iron into most par 4's.
The tees were thin but playable, most divots had been fixed. Several were humpbacked and could use some leveling.
The fairways were more thin than lush but had good coverage overall. Quite playable even with some occasional hardpan areas. A rarity these days is that numerous fairways had staked off areas that you would sink in if you drove/walked through it. I plugged 2 balls that were almost lost, one on a drive, one on an approach shot from an abundance of water in a lower spot?
The rough was mostly shaved down and was not very penal. I found it usually good to chip out of.
I was not in any traps but they looked to be well maintained.
The humpbacked greens look 95% recovered from their recent aeration. They held approach shots great, like throwing darts with short irons. However, they were somewhat bumpy and medium slow to putt on. Looked like bent, poa, with occasional bermuda, crabgrass and kikuyu mixed in? I suspect both the mixture of grasses and the recent aeration contributed to their inconsistency to putt on.
The customer service from the starter to the cart gal to the snack shop on the turn was all great. Had their lunch combo, $6.50 for a hot dog, drink and chips. Their $2 Margarita special @ the snack stand tasted good on a hot afternoon after I mixed it with Gatoraide. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and would definitely play here again.
Weekend Stay away
Tee off at noon. Played 9 holes in a little under 3 hours. No water on course, had to call twice to get cart girl and spent $10 just to hydrate. Condition ok for a muni. Just a mess on the weekend.
Quantity over Quality
It's clear that Brookside no longer cares about the golfer experience. They keep overbooking the course, creating fivesomes, and just making for a lousy day. My group of three:
1. Had our 9:30 am tee time pushed back by 30 minutes because of a tournament.
2. Got paired with a two some so now we're a fivesome. Fivessomes slow up play but it lets the course cram more people on.
3. Beverage cart service was almost non-existent.
4. Water coolers (on a warm day) were empty.
5. Had to wait at almost every hole to tee off because it was so backed up.
6. NEVER say a marshall/ambassador.
7. Ended the round at 4:30 PM. Go back to number 1. We started at 9:30 am. Yes, that's right it took 7 hours to play 18 holes. Look at the list again, no marshal, water cooler, cart, waiting at ever hole for SEVEN hours.
Aerated greens
When I booked the tee time, it did not say that the greens had been aerated. They also charge too much to play on those greens. I like playing here, but I don't like playing on aerated greens.
Needs to be marshaled
The corse conditions were bad. They use several faiways as a parking lot for the Rose Bowl. We could see the aftermath of tailgate partying on several fairways including a pickup truck that was left on one of the fairways. I asumn they could not get it started? Why was it not towed away before morning is unbelievable. Also, when making the reservation, was not told the greens were sanded, this always is anoying since they charge full green fees. Last but not least, pace of play made the round of golf miserable. Come on Brookside, groups of 5 and no Marshal!!! Play our first and last round here.
Beware: slow Fivesomes
I'm sorry to say, I must revise my previous assessment of Brookside downward due to poor management. Word is out that they will override policy and book fivesomes, even when the fivesomes are not strong players. Then, it appears that the fivesomes either believe themselves entitled to not care about anybody else, or they are oblivious to etiquette.
This is really a poor decision on management's part to allow this kind of nonsense. It is very unfortunate, because it's a nice course otherwise, and right in my back yard. The person I was playing with said he never wanted to come back to the course, due to the fivesome situation described above.
Disappointed Golfer
For the second time in a row, I could not start on reserved tee time because there is no cart available. I checked in 15 minutes prior to the reserved tee time but actually hit a first ball 30 minutes after the designated tee time. The staff permitted many walk-inns and seem to pay little attention to "reserved tee time". All parties were five-sum and I had too much practice time before tee shot. It took 2.5 hours to complete seven holes and then we moved back to the 2nd hole and did not bother to play 8 th and 9 th because two parties in each hole.
Review
Staff stinks! Course beat up! Carts slow! Restrooms bad
Example of what is worst about public golf.
This is easily the worst golf experience I've had in years. Bad golfers playing from the tips, 6 hour round the weekend norm, they unbelievably allow fivesomes, bad turf & conditions, boring layout,.. did I mention Fivesomes? When I went in after 8 holes I was ironically given a coupon for a free round. Nice people, but this course is the poster child for what is worst about public golf.
The more, the less merry
They overbook this place with impunity. Shamelessly
Teed off!!!!
Teed off 45 minutes late and the round took 5:30...what's not to like?!?!
Pasadena Gem
Yes, it gets busy, even "crowded"... so if you are one of those impatient golfers who has to rush rush rush and take the "pace of play" pledge maybe a little too seriously and furiously, then this is not your course and frankly we'd rather have you stay away anyway. But if you can understand that the course is full and contains players of all levels, then it's cool... staff was businesslike, course is nice, location is world-class... hey, what's not to like?
Great local course
Great local course. Deals on zing and now make it worth it. There are times when it can be crowded, but it can be planned around.
36 holes. What's not to like?
Great place to play golf if you are serious golfer.
Nice course to play golf : a bit fast green and various lay out halls. ( #.1 course )
And the length of halls are a bit longer and challenging if you compare to any other muni courses.
Above all, this course is a quite fun to play.
To me, that's enough.
Great First Time!
Wife and I played it-beautiful evening play. Ignore all negative comments here (can't please everyone and tons of a-holes where you find money, so grain of salt in the details). Lots of surprises, fun, medium-level skill needed. Just a lovely local course. If it's busy, it's busy for a reason! You want fast? Take up pamphlet-reading.
Just fun all around and very nice/helpful staff.
Play it!!!
Great course
Always a good course. Pace of play would have been much better but someone in our group took 5 minutes per shot. Course was really great

I have revised my estimation of this course based on more recent experience: FIVESOMES, and slow ones at that. Shameful management.
