The Preserve Golf Club
About
The Preserve Golf Club at Tara features Ted McAnlis' par 72, championship golf course. Exceptional care was taken to protect and enhance wetlands and other natural features of the course. At just over 7,000 yards, the course offers four sets of tees, allowing players of all skill levels to enjoy a challenging round of golf. Eleven bridges span the many small streams running through the golf course, protecting natural waterfalls and wetland habitats. A unique feature is the 60 foot Mount Matthew, which sits between the driving zones of hole five and six and forms an impressive backdrop for the tee shot. A beautiful clubhouse is open for lunch daily and is perfect for seminars, banquets or receptions.

LAVA Cup at Hilton Head Island Photo submitted by Tom3815047 on 11/01/2012
Ownership and management just don’t care
First of all this course has been “under construction“ replacing the greens for almost a year and a half. They were supposed to be done in October 2025 and here we are three months later and we’re not even close to being done.
The saving grace for a while was that it was a cheap course at 20 or 25 bucks. They haven’t done anything except for put in ball washers at half of the holes and they increase the price to $40.
These guys are driving this course into the ground and have no idea how to run a golf course.
Then factor in the pace of play… the Marshall drives around and is actually a very nice guy, but he just makes excuses and says it’s backed up or there’s a couple foursomes ahead of you, when the foursome ahead of you is playing a five hour round.
You can’t have a crappy course, overcharge for it, and at least not keep pace of play fast and expect people to come back.
They might read this, they might not… The bottom line is ownership just doesn’t care.
Coming around
I’ve avoided this course for a couple of years due to poor reviews. I thought I’d give it a try because it’s getting better reviews this year, AND because of the very low price. I was lucky enough to be paired with 3 gentlemen who live on the course and have played for many years. The course is still in pretty rough shape, but they are visibly working to improve it. The biggest issue is that 16 of the greens are still under repair so there are temporary greens located in front of the originals, which is to say closely mown grass. The original greens will probably be played fairly soon, which will make it much more enjoyable. But you won’t be able to play for $28 like did!! It is actually a great layout and will be quite challenging when completely upgraded.
Practice Golf here
Extremely tight layout. While temporary greens are not ideal for putting, the course itself is great practice.. Requires the golfer to think. If you hit a green you have likely hit a shot to professional standard.
Great course
There are many noticeable improvements to the course. Temporary greens do not take away from the layout and beauty of the course. For amateur golfers this track is the best value in the area.
Tara Preserve
The course needs a great deal of work. All greens but two were temporary. Excellent layout that we have enjoyed playing over the years but much work needs to be done.
The course improvements are taking shape
I haven’t played this course in 2 years due to the past horrible conditions. However, I was happy to see some drastic improvements and more coming soon. All the greens are being resurfaced and even though only 2 were in play today, (the other holes had temporary greens) it looked like the majority could be playable in the near future. All the bunkers are getting new white sand. The fairways are much improved though they still need help. All in all, after years of letting the course run down, it has a bright future and I will be playing it more often.
This course has great features
We often play on this golf course, even though the new greens are not ready yet. We like the location of the course and the service. The bathrooms are already well-maintained and clean. Containers and towels for washing golf balls have been installed. Most importantly, the new greens are almost ready. The planted flowers and renovated building create an inviting atmosphere. The golf course has a great future.
all temporary greens
All greens are being re done so, at this booking, all greens were temporary. Low price reflects that. Hope they finish re-doing the greens soon.
1223 cough
The greens/half of them were temporary but the temp greens were better than the old greens 8 months ago I have also noticed a lot of work being done to make this course better
Improving
Lots of bad reviews out there about this course. Does it need some help, sure- but it is certainly priced appropriately. They are working hard to improve and saw many folks working in the course. At the end of the day, if you want a championship course, look elsewhere. If you want a good deal, with friendly staff and a fun day of golf- bring it on.
The Greens
Only two greens were in use the rest had temp greens in the fairway ! Reason I don’t recommend this course is that on a week day there were no grounds keepers working on any greens so there is little chance that the greens will be in play soon if ever witch is sad as the course could be a great course
Greens were being restored so the flag ould 39 to 60 yards short of the green in the fairway. Due to thi ptrying to have decent put was next to impossible due to weeds and rough surface. I used to enjoy playing this course hopefully it gets back to normal soon
There is hope....
Have played this course yearly for the last 20 years and it has gone dramatically downhill BUT it has improved considerably since my last outing. This is a great lay-out and it shows that they are making a serious attempt to bring it back to some semblance of playability.
It would have been nice to know that there were only 2 greens in play but for a $10 Hot Deal I can't really complain. There have been dollars and man-hours invested although they seem to have forgotten the 7th hole.
I hope that these efforts continue as it is sad to see a good track die. See you next year....
