Open fairways; fast, undulating greens
I played Whispering Oak with 7 of my groomsmen before my wedding. The skill level ranged from hacker to 12 handicap. This course was great for our group because it has wide fairways without bordering houses, but plenty of water and OB areas. Many a ball was lost in their tender embrace that day, let me tell you. The tee boxes and fairways were in pristine shape. The pace of play was as fast as we liked. We played on a late Thursday afternoon, and we saw only one other twosome on both the front and back.
The greens had been sanded, but were lightning fast. That combined with their multiple tiers and almost minigolf level breaks let to a lot of challenging putts for some guys that have never played on greens that fast. The beauty of it was the greens reward smart shots with holeable puts, and punish bad shots with those dreaded potential 3-4 putt situations.
The one drawback would be some of the staff. I know we aren't members, but the fellas at the bag drop were less than welcoming. That's always an annoyance to me because they are the first people you meet at a course, and that first impression is important. The young man and lady inside were helpful, but didn't have an overabundance of personality. Maybe they were just intimidated by eight exuberant males walking in at once, but we tried to engage in conversation with limited success.
All told it was a great time, and I would go again. I would say the course was pristine other than the greens. If you are lucky enough to be there after they are polished up, you will be in for a treat.
great course to play
course in excellent dondition. greens absolut faboules and challenging tp play.
Whispering Oaks
Played as a single on a weekend afternoon. Fast, until I ran into the groups ahead of me. Course well-maintained despite dry conditions. Fairways very open, you can use driver on almost every hole. Lots of sandtraps though. For the price paid, well worth it, and recommended.
A MUST PLAY! ONE OF JACK"S FINEST DESIGNS.
JACK OVER DELIVERED ON THE WHISPERING OAK COURSE. AWESOME LAYOUT AND DESIGN. YOU COULD TELL IT WAS JACK'S DESIGN ONCE YOU ARRIVE AT THE VERY FIRST GREEN. WILL PLAY AGAIN AND AGAIN AND....
Greens are challenging
Beautiful course! Fairways are wide open and like carpet. The water does not come into play much on this course. The greens however, are quite challenging. It is a fabulous course that we can't wait to play again! I believe it could be the best course in Fort Myers.
Best Course within 30 miles of Fort Myers FL.
I played the Whispering Oaks course at Verandah yesterday. I found the course in excellent condition. Greens were medium to fast but not fast fast. I would guess a 10 on the stemp. Putted true and all greens had multiple levels which added to the difficulty. Tees were immaculate. The driving range was a bit difficult to find the first time but worth it when you get there. Each of their two 18 hole courses has there own practice putting green right at the first tee. I found this a great way to wait for you tee off. The quality of the grass and greens was exceptional. A must play if you're in the area.
best course in lee county
best course in lee county florida, perfect conditions all the time no pressure from staff play at own rate
Many un-Florida like features, for the better.
In an area that's known for its flat, unexciting courses, this course will keep your attention. Plenty of hazards and bunkers but plays emminently fair.
Nice
The course is not an easy one. The greens are very undulated.
The staff was rude.
Outstanding
Best course I've played in SWFL so far. Not too many homes close to play, lush fairways, and beautiful old-growth trees all make this place a winner. The layout was reminiscent of courses I've played on Hilton Head Island.
Scenic, great condition, friendly staff, a must play again course.
One of the best courses in SW Florida. Played it twice in two weeks and can't say enough about the course, conditions and staff. The greens are the toughest part of the course, excellent condition but undulation that will make you really think, thanks Jack Nicklaus.
Worth Trying
Nice course. Worth playing. Wide fairways and very good greens. Very nice practice facility that is included in your green fee.
Greens are challenging
Enjoyed the course. Landing areas are very fair. Par 3's were challenging. Lots of undulating greens, but were not cut so close that the average golfer would become totally frustrated.
Very fine Golf Course
Whispering Oak is a Jack Nicklaus Design with wide fairways an challenging greens. Course is in excellent conditions. Friendly staff and beautiful club house.
Excellent course for all levels of play
The Verandah is a great playing experience and well worth the fees even in season. I am a local resident and both courses at the Verandah are among my favorites for quality and value.
Great course at great golfnow discount!
I played this course on March 17th, at a considerable discount thanks to golfnow. March is still high season in Florida and most courses are charging much more than they are worth so it was nice to get a chance to play at a great course for a decent price. The course is well maintained and visually appealing. It has the signature difficulty of a Nicklaus course - particularly in the undulating and fast greens. If you pay attention and manage your game you can still score so it is not an impossibly difficult or gimmicky course. I recommend it to anyone who is in the Fort Myers area - look for the great discount on golfnow!
Great course!
The Whispering Oak course offers fast and challenging greens. Some sand traps need add'l sand. Overall a good value for the price.
A great experience
Very good, well maintained course. As a lower single digit handicap player, I found it challenging with the fairways in great condition and the greens were fast and true. Very nice range to warmup at and the Pro shop staff was friendly and helpfull. I have played many of the courses in and around Ft.Myers and for the money, this is one of the best
Best Greens in SouthWest Florida
I just moved to south Fort Myers and I have been playing all the local courses to see where I want to become a member. Verandah is on the top of my list. They have two different 18 hole courses and each is as challenging as the other. The layout is tough and sometimes you have to play smart and pick the right club or you will be in the water or OB. These are the best greens in SouthWest Florida. They behave like PGA greens you see on tv. You can land the ball on the green but if its a false front it will come all the way down and if you dont have enough loft in your approach shot it could roll off the back. 5 Stars
