Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon - Champions Course

About
Situated amongst the foothills of the San Gorgonio and San Jacinto Mountains, Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon boasts 36 holes of scenic championship golf. The two courses, the Champions and the Legends, are some of the area's most popular. The older Champions Course is host to the PGA Tour Q-School and it is a Nationwide Tour Qualifier. It is such a popular tournament location that it is known as the "home of the Southern California PGA." The Champions is a challenging but playable layout with tight fairways and numerous steep-lipped bunkers strategically placed throughout. There is also thick, treacherous rough that will swallow any errant shots. Also included in your tee time is unlimited use of the practice facilities, which include an all-grass driving range as well as chipping and putting greens.

Won’t come back, the bunkers are unplayable
Played here on a Friday. The group I play with, are all good to average golfers. We have played here many times, but haven’t played here in about two years. We were so disappointed at the quality of the bunkers. They are virtually unplayable. The designer put bunkers All over the course, difficult spots, challenge you on approaches, steep faces, and just all around beautiful bunkers. But now they are unplayable because they are completely unkept. You have to pick up your ball and pull it out because there’s no way to get a club under it. It just bounces off the ground. So disappointing, that we all agreed we’re just not coming back. Oak Valley is across the street, we’re gonna try out there next week.
Disappointed, No Improvement.
Pace of play here, in my opinion has gotten ridiculous. I was 53 mins. behind pace on hole 15!! From the start we waited on every single shot. At one point there were 4 groups on one single hole. Due to the crazy slow pace of play I wasn’t even able to finish the round. I teed off at 11:40! Frustrated with the pace and the fact I wasn’t going to be able to finish before dark I drove in… only to pass a 6 some playing on the green on 17 and a wide open 18th… I really wish they would get their pace of play under control. Have heard for over a year now that they were supposed to get sand in their bunkers also. They remain hard pan with little to no dirt (sand would be nice), and more rocks than I care to try to fish out so I’m not ruining $180 wedges. Could be an amazing course. Wish it wasn’t this way. I won’t be going back until I hear significant changes have been made. Sorry Tukwet.
Nice Layout
Beginner golfers held up everybody and the traps are almost unplayable. Just add some sand and you have a great course.
Not work even the discounted rate
Where to start, the pro shop guy was hardly paying attention. There was no starter so the course was clogged immediately once teeing off, took us 4 hours to get through 13 holes, with trying to play through other parties. Not ranger keeping pace up, no nothing.
The clubhouse was closed at 3 so you couldn’t even use the restroom on the way out. The photos on golf now do not look even remotely close to what the course actually looked like.
I’ve only played maybe 10-12 courses in my time, however this ranks dead last.
Disappointing
I’ve been playing here for more than a decade. The course once was impeccable shape and now it’s far from it. The slow pace of play, the numerous golfers who are from the skill set needed to play a championship course, and Tukwet unwilling to use rangers ensures a five hour plus round, my review is more than generous. I left the course on the 12th hole after more than three hours after teeing off. Yes it was thanksgiving weekend. This was a late day tee time and many of the golfers already played their round. We watched the groups ahead of us. No way they belonged on the golf course.
Nice course!
Staff is always friendly. Tukwet is a great place to play when you get those deals. Greens are fast and bunkers are hard as a rock with rocks. So just don’t hit into the plethora of bunkers and you’re good. Last few times I played the pace of play was slow. If they had a Marshall I’m sure pace would go back to normal. Overall course is fun to play and great layout.
Tee boxes & fairways have not been maintained.. many bare patches
All bunkers and there were many are cavernous with no sand in them & most if not all with numerous rocks & pebbles
Starter was there only saving grace... very personable & informative
I have played golf for over 50 years & this probably ranks as the most unenjoyable round I have played
Slow and bad conditions
5+ hour round, tees and fairways sparse, bunkers are worst of i ever seen, rocks, mud and puddles. We couldn't play them. Greens were ok. Had 2 twosome try to go around us, we were waiting for 3 foursomes in front of us. No ranger or staff on the course. Felt like I played 72 holes!! I liked the layout, but in such poor condition, I wont play there ever.
Pace of Play
Tee Time at 1222. Nearly 4 hours to play 9 holes. Only able to play 11 holes in 4.5 hours. There were 5 foursome backed up on one Par 3.. Sat for 35 min waiting to hit tee shot. Nice setting but need to do something about the pace of play.
Good Course with Updates Needed
Overall a good course and wonderful day of golfing. Unlike the Legends Course, the Champions Course does not seem as affected by the extensive amount of new home and infrastructure construction occurring adjacent to the course. Suggestions are that the Tee boxes need attention, especially with new grass. The pace of play was worse than normal and there was no marshal to be seen all day! The greens are in great shape and are rolling fast.
NOTE: The quantity of new houses surrounding Tukwet Canyon, especially on the Legends Course is mind-boggling. Let's just say it is no longer "a walk in the park (course)". Too bad!
First time player
I was very excited to play the course for the first time. The staff was super friendly and welcoming.
The lay out was challenging but fair. The visual lines allowed for strategic target golf or an aggressive style.
The greens were great. Very fast and challenging.
Two downsides. (1) pace of play was terrible. Five hour round of golf.
(2) the golfers were not fixing their ball marks on the green. Massive ball marks, which was frustrating considering how great the greens were.
Course needs some TLC
Have not played in a couple of years and it was disappointing to notice that the course is not being maintained. Tee boxes are sparse greens are patchy sand traps are like cement with very little sand in them. Ownership is going to have to spend some money and not just keep it open without proper maintenance.
