Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Fun course, usual bad experience at the turn.
This is a great go-to course. Challenging enough for all golfer levels. The course is in good shape and the pricing is fair.
The only negative I have to say is that the experience buying food or drinks at the turn is really frustrating. You can count on 10-15 minutes, at least, if you want to get something. Meanwhile, you feel like you are holding up pace of play, worrying about whether the foursome behind you is going to jump in front of you.
If this happened once or twice before, it would be no big deal. But it happens every time! The person at the counter is really slow and is unfriendly, with no sense of urgency. So it is really frustrating.
I, and the other players, wondered why there was not a drink cart on the course. We would have purchased from the cart and it would have sped things up, overall.
Anyway, other that the drink/food counter experience at the turn, the course is great! I enjoy playing there. I just had to say something about the turn experience because it happens every time.
Thanks.
Surprised at the decline of this course
Haven't played Talega in about 7 years and I am surprised on how much it has gone down in quality. I remember it being a very upscale course in great conditions but not sure if it was due to COVID or management, this course is not worth the $150 price tag. Restaurant was closed on a Friday of a holiday weekend so no food pre or post round. The snack shop had a variety of food options but only hot dogs were available. No water stations throughout the course, no beverage cart coming around to offer food or drinks. Graffitti on the bathroom doors throughout the course. For the $150 price point, better to play Arroyo, Tijeras, San Juan Hills, Strawberry Farms, etc. over this course. Sad to see but won't be playing Talega again.
Coarse rates high
Excellent coarse to play on, very fast to play, we played within 3 hours yesterday
Bar and restaurant facilities non existent
Have a halfway house with very good food
Solid course
Great condition / Greens near perfect / Good variety of design
Talega is a Fun Course
I played Talega while on vacation however I have played it before. The course was in very good condition. The layout is pretty cool, but it helps to play with a local that knows the course and targets to aim off the tees. We finished the round in 4 hr and 15 mins. Each time I have played Talega it has been a fun experience.
Challenging and Overpriced
I'd like to start by saying I'd never play this course for full price. The condition of the course, particularly some of the greens, were fine at best and needed work at worst.
Cost aside, this is a challenging course with a lot of risk/reward which can make it both fun and frustrating when you end up in trouble. The front is super scoreable and the back is tight.
Pace on the greens was good but pins were often placed on spines which made some reads quite tough.
Give it a go if you live nearby and can snag a decent rate
Beautiful day, nice course
The course is in pretty good shape...the staff is top notch. Great sunny 72 degree day.
Not a great course
Expected there would be a cart for on course refreshments but there was none. Would have been nice to have been told before we started. Condition of course was very dry with burned out areas but greens were in good shape. Never a fan of courses with a hole where you have no idea where to hit. Fairway completely hidden from t box. Did have a red flag in the distance as an aiming point. No map of hole on cart gps screen and no picture of layout of course on scorecard. Just a stupid hole all around. Golf is expensive but $100 for this course is excessive
Such potential
The layout here is really cool and it could be one of the best courses in the area if they just gave it a little more love. Overall good conditions, a few tee boxes with rough length grass for some reason. We couldn’t get anything at the turn because a wedding was going on. Maybe 1 water fountain on the entire course. Staff was nice and pace was very solid. Would come back.
Golf cart #9 is horrible, don't drive it
After the 10th hole our golf cart would just inadvertently lock the brakes throwing us forward, skidding the car then not moving for another minute. Only to do it again over & over just when you'd think it was fine. Happened about 25 times when you'd least expect it. Had a two some on us so didn't want to hold up pace of play To call for help. Was with Wifey for her birthday so it really ruined our golf day. Told the guy at cart return not to let anybody else in the cart, yet he didn't seem to care, just said 'oh..
