The Trails of Frisco golf course is one of Jeff Brauer’s most unique designs -- primarily because it doesn’t fit the mold of his other courses. Brauer, who’s known for his open, straight-forward courses, designed this one to tip out to a par 71, 6,900 yards, loaded it with hidden creeks, scenic wetlands, extensive bunkering, and massive greens. In fact, first-timers will be confused here. They’ll face intimidating views off the tee that leave doubt as to the problems that loom ahead, and it is definitely possible to lose all of your balls off the tee if you’re struggling.

The golf course is just flat-out challenging, especially on the front nine. No. 1 opens up with a creek on the left that cuts in front of the green and generally makes its presence known on every shot. The play here is to stay right and stay away from its subtle presence on the left side. The creek comes into play on Nos. 2, 4, 5, and even No. 9, where it chutes from the fairway in front of the green and surrounds the green of this challenging par 4.

All told, water and waste areas are in play on 16 of 18 holes (including every par 3), and the creeks are enhanced by visible lakes and ponds on the back side, even though it is considered a bit easier than the front.

Wet Saturday morning

Staff friendly and have done a good job with course in wet weather, pace was good until we ran into a group 7 guys playing together, Marshall did his best to break them up but they apparently had been drinking early, we appreciate the Marshall letting us know, added an extra 45 min to our round., always enjoy playing this course.

The guy in the clubhouse was rude. Seriously could not have been 10 people playing golf that day and he acted like he had no time for any of them. We had a twosome in front of us playing from the tips and neither could hit to the women’s tee. They shared clubs...there was a marshal not sure what his role was but he cared nothing about that.

Winter Golf Here is Iffy

In the winter they basically let the grass die. Everything is yellow except the greens, they are brown. The greens are like industrial carpet, fast and hard, and for whatever reason, they still decide to put the pins on slopes. You will at least 3-put most holes if you land on the high side of a pin. Anyway, the course had lots of weeds, the bunkers have no sand, just hard-packed dirt. The tee boxes are also rock solid to the point it's hard to get your tee in the ground.

Super slow pace

All things considered the course was in pretty good shape. The pace of play, however was extremely slow and there were no marshals on the course. Took three hours to play nine holes. I was able to get 15 holes in but three of them were in the dark.

Went way downhill

Always a challenging layout, but pin placements were downright unfair on several greens today - in the middle of a slope. Felt like mini golf.

Fairways and greens were in ok shape, excessively dry and no overseeding.

Need Marshall to keep pace

Tee'd off at 8:10 am, 4th group to go off that day, by the 2nd hole, our group had to wait on every hole to hit shots..........the group in front of us had no idea of what they were supposed to do regarding pace of play and picking up.................because of this one group of terribly slow play and no consideration of other, it screwed up everyone else all day long.............as the 4th group to go off in the day, we should of played 18 holes in less than 4 hours...........instead it took us 4 hours and 40 minutes,.,.,.,.,.,.,.again screwing everybody for the rest of the day...............someone should be responsible to making sure you play with courtesy to other golfers.

Texas hardpan

Fairways are rock hard and ball rolls into hazards way too easily. Makes it extremely challenging trying to lay up to the many creeks throughout the course. Greens are rock hard and fast. Most holes are on slopes which makes it very challenging.

Tough greens

The course is always challenging with some narrow fairways. The greens were tough as the round went on as the condition was pretty dry.

Always a good course to challenge your precision.

Typical Trails

What stops this course from being a great course its ownership history. Clubhouse has minimal amenities, driving range is always like hitting off sandy deadpan (somewhat have to use a tee) no grass or mats. Tee boxes are worn down, greens are firm, sand traps have the cheapest grade of sand and poor drainage which makes them hard. big dispersion between fairway and cart path in that the pathways have sunken down. No curtesy cart going around the course. Club house staff is somewhat friendly. Its a fun challanging course but run like a muni course.

Trails of Frisco - Nov 1, 2020

I do not recommend this course. It was one of the slowest rounds I've ever played, over 5 hours of waiting on every shot on every hole. No rangers making groups keep moving. Incongruous setup of holes for the handicap base. Played Blue tees with 6317 total yard, but two of four par 5s were 500 yards or less, while 5 or the par 4s were 400 or over including 3 that were 426 or over. The course was not well maintained and all of the tee boxes need to be leveled and resodded. I will not take any more chances with this course.

Trails of Frisco

Very disappointed in the quality of the course. The greens were like concrete and in spots if you putted uphill and didn't reach the hole, your ball would come back at you. The entire course needs to infrastructure work from the repair/replace cart paths to leveling the tee boxes. It also needs a review of the placement of the tee boxes as the length stated from the blue tees (6300+ yards) is misleading. There is a large number of 400+ tee boxes that might as well be par 5s for the average 12 handicap golfer. The only good thing about the play yesterday was that we finished the 18 holes in under 4 hours. For the price charged, the quality was not there. It will be some time before I return. Given that golf rounds are up 20% from last year, it is incomprehensible that the rates would go up so much and so little being done to take care of the course.

Nice layout, maintenance is lacking

I like the layout of this challenging course. The driving range is REALLY bad. Everything about it is bd. I would love for them to invest in grading, new soil, seed and balls. I’m sure it will payoff.

Back to the course: it’s super packed and slow, maintained okay but really an awesome layout. I guess it’s worth the money but not the time it takes to play a round.
