About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Average course with room for improvement
They had just plugged greens on 3/30/22 and we played next day but they failed to inform us of this or provide a discount, which is customary. Overall, course is a bit hit or miss with a lot of brown and dead areas in fairways but I’ve almost come to expect that at most public courses in Houston. Sand traps were unplayable and had standing water in all. It had just rained the day before but I saw no attempt to try and drain them or even keep in playable condition.
There was a terribly slow group of 4 in front of us with no Marshall to police their pace. What should have been a 4 hour round on a Thursday took nearly 4:30 or 4:40.
But, it was a beautiful day and hard to get too bummed about being away from work. And they still offered the burger and chips after the round, included with your green fee, so that helps save the value proposition a bit. The adjacent members course looks it great shape - just wish they took a 1/4 of that time to invest on the primary course.

Kids took over the course
Stacking multiple foursomes of walking kids monopolizing three holes on our front nine negated the hot deal we got from golf now.. I’ll credit the trailing group for waving thru our threesome’s two blue tee hitters on the par 3 number three hole but by the time I pulled my cart to the white tee, they proceed to SLOWLY tee off and then I was forced to wait for them to clear the green. I picked up and headed to number 3 where my group took it upon themselves to bypass the clogged fairways on four and five, finally joining up six. I was finally able to finish ahead of sunset on those three missing holes. I encountered the Marshall just before my last hole. He said he talked with them about stepping up their pace of play and admitted they should have waived faster groups through. This was a weekday during spring break. Don’t play this course when school is out.

Newly painted parking lot nearly empty
I was wondering if higher gasoline prices and a cool day in the 50s affected the turnout on a midweek round. The course is in pretty good shape, some po Ana trying to invade greens like on a lot of area courses but the greens were smooth and quick. The number 3 par 3 hole was in a tough front right position…I did well to bogey after finding the left front bunker.. I really enjoy the layout, especially the last two holes as well as the second. My favorite course.

Pleasant Surprise
New to area and glad to have discovered the course. In addition to a solid layout and good condition, staff was friendly and range was tops! I would recommend without hesitation. Even included a burger, chips and drink.

Poor customer service
Had a prepaid tee time on 2/26. It was raining and 40 degrees. Called the course and they wouldn’t allow a refund. Poor form….

Where is the grass.
Very bare fairways and wash-outs all along the rough and around the greens It is hard to chip around the greens because of no grass.
