About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Fun layout - horrible conditions
The fairways were absolutely horrendous. There were fairway bunkers that had literal concrete in them and no sand at all. This place felt like you were playing at a municipal course for $20. I am highly disappointed as this course used to be in tip top shape and has lots of potential.
Water the fairways
Round was really good, greens rolled pretty good after noticing that they have been aerated a little while ago. Course was in pretty good shape but as the temps are starting to climb I noticed some dry spots already and suggest more watering especially in the fairways! Hey if you miss the fairway you gotta pay the price but if your ball is in the fairway I don’t wanna be penalized because the grass is burnt and the ground is hard. Bree the cart girl was fantastic, very nice and saw her 4 times during the round on an extremely hot day and she was as nice the 4th time we saw her as she was the 1st and it was pushing 100 degrees!

No marshal enforcing pace of play. One Par five on the front side had 5 groups backed up. We ran in to a group with 6 players on the back side. Fun course and short drive from center of Houston, but 5 hour round will prevent return.

Fun round
All was good except the course needs more distance markers from the fairway.
A 150 yard marker would help, a lot..

Better late than never
I was held up by construction and arrived late for my tee time. No problem, they readily accommodated me, gave me the ok to tee off after the next group. The course was in great shape…I putted so well on the smooth greens. It’s also great to have ice readily available in the clubhouse…even fresh popcorn which is a great way to stay hydrated. Fun shing holes into the wind…always a challenge.

Bad Conditions
I first played here about 9 months ago and the fairways, tee boxes, and around the greens had tons of bad spots and patchy grass. I thought to myself “this is awful what the freeze has done to this nice course”. I gave it 9 months and came back…. It’s probably worse now then it was then. The greens are uneven and slow, the fairways are very much beat up. If you don’t hit the green you might as well just fluff your lie because it’s for sure going to be in junk. Played the bunkers as ground under repair because they were more rock than sand. This is officially on the “do not play” list. You could tell me the twilight rate was the prime Sunday morning rate and I’d still go elsewhere.
Fun course, but bunkers need work
We had a blast playing Houston National on April 29, 2022. The course is fun, fair and challenging from start to finish. My only complaint is the current condition of the bunkers. Some of the bunkers are unplayable. It wouldn’t take a lot of work to fix and maintain the traps. It does take some work, though. All in all, the experience at Houston National is positive.

the fairways were dry, since there has been little rain lately, there were patches of dirt in some areas.
the greens had been plugged and sanded, which took away some of the enjoyment of the round. they were slow and bumpy.
the layout is still very challenging.

Even on a GolfNow deal it’s overpriced. Could be soo much better with better course maintenance. Greens bad with weeds etc, bunkers bad, fairways hard af. Pay little extra and wait for a Blackhorse South deal. 100 percent better value!

Character
Houston National is a wonderful course! All the holes are fair, and the fairways are wide and (for the most part) forgiving.
Greens were punched yesterday, but they were fair too! Very smooth and not the bit bumpy. They were however slow. (I never really got used to the slowness and three putted 6 times.
But most of all the course’s layout has fantastic ‘character’ and is a joy to play!
