The Golf Club of Texas
About
The best testament one can give The Golf Club of Texas (formerly known as The Golf Club of Texas at Briggs Ranch) is that it hosts some big local tournaments. The large greens and tee boxes are some of the very best San Antonio has to offer. This is truly a high end facility. If you have not been out to enjoy this course you really need to. The place is all greened up and with the unique landscaping it's just a real pretty experience with great golf. The golf carts are outfitted with GPS which gives accurate distance to the pin and shows the contours of the greens. This track combines Links Style golf with Hill Country golf, giving players a taste of both types of golf. The course is among the best that San Antonio has to offer. The senior staff is very experienced and the service is all that you would expect at a high-value public course. The new clubhouse is beautiful and features a full service restaurant. After playing a round, you will really enjoy just sitting on the porch and taking in the view.
Directions: 20 Minutes from downtown. Take U.S. 90 west to Texas 211 (2 exits past loop 1604) and we on the right. From downtown take 90 west to Texas 211.

Lee Trevino got it right
Enjoyed walking this course on the last day of the virus lockdown. Fairways are generally generous on the front nine with a great deal of run. The back nine is tighter with more carries over water.
The greens are firm and huge - plenty of opportunities to three-putt. I found the front easier than the back. Hole 1 is a short par 4 down the hill and is in the photo.
I will plan to return.
This course gives you a true golf experience
I played during the covid19 period so social distancing guidelines were in place I walked the course and it does require you to be fit enough to carry your weight but the course starts off with a easy down hill par four to get you off to a good start then number two hole shows how tough it can get with a dog leg right that requires you to place your drive left center and long enough to have a good angle to a elevated green tucked away to the right corner from then on you get a even dose of both the greens and fairways are in good shape and the views it gives you add to the experience it’s just a great place to play golf
Lack of Communication (Staff)
I recently made an online reservation and have done so many times at GCTX. I have witnessed the changes in ownership, management, and course maintenance over the years. Upon this most recent event I will no longer be a customer of GCTX. The inconsistency of the staff when it comes to giving out the proper information in dealing with course policies or modifying tee times has been to say the least frustrating. Depending upon who you get to speak to one person says one thing and the other has a different story? I have changed tee times in the past and now recently they re-route you to call a number to change it? This has happened on more that one occasion. Whether carts are available or not (two different stories based upon who you speak with?) Driving range open or not open (depending upon who you speak to?) . The course is not an issue as I have enjoyed most outings as it has transitioned over the years, but in dealing with the staff and lack of consistency on communication of information has led me to no longer being.a customer at the GCTX.
Still a Very Good Overall Experience
I played at 1245 pm using a Golfnow reward credit.
Course was a little busier than usual. I started solo and then joined a twosome.
Social distancing measures are in effect (max. 6 people at time on practice tee, one to a cart, flagsticks left in hole, etc.) No water available on the course, this could be a concern for walkers in hot weather.
This course is unique, with zoysia grass fairways and greens. Both are in very good shape. Green speed was posted as 11 Stimpmeter, faster than most other area courses that I play. Fairways are wide but rough is tall and balls hit there are mostly gone. For best results play this course "links style" by landing approach shots short and roll up to the pin. Greens are also extremely large and good lag putting is key.
Overall this is still a very good choice for play even under the current social distancing guidelines. I rated off course amenities as Average simply because most are no longer available.
Great course but watch for the pedestrians.
I’ve played this course for many years but lately you have to watch out for fisherman and fisherwomen. You also have to watch out for random people walking and riding their bikes and scooters around the course. I contacted the pro desk many time and nothing gets done. There were people standing in front of the tee box skipping rocks over the water we asked them to move they said no. I pay good money to play here and this definitely will make me think twice before coming back or play. The apartments next to the course have made this once Amazing place their personal play ground. I hope they can get it together. Two rounds in two weeks ruined.
Rough Greens
Not sure if it's the type of grass, but the greens are very bumpy.
Not very good
When a golf course gives you incentives for “liking” them on social media in a Tier system (the more reviews the better the discount in the bar, for greens fees or merchandise) and that’s posted in the golf cart—that says a lot about the course & management. Sorry the conditions were not great.
Should be under Foreclosure
I have played there many times a few years ago. Right now, absolutely a dirt track. Greens are extremely bumpy and close to unplayable. Looks like there has been zero maintenance on investment in the course for some time. Would not recommend this course to anyone even if playing for free.
This course could be so much better
I'll start at the beginning. Pro shop staff is about the worst, unfriendly, disinterested and slow. The starter is the only person (outside of the bar staff) that actually is actually friendly. Oh, and 5 somes on a Sunday morning??? Now for the course. Overall for winter, the course isn't in terrible shape if it weren't for the constant problems with boars digging up the course. Bunkers are a complete joke, even under the best of circumstances, you're hitting out of worked over dirt. Greens roll well (in the mornings) but are so hard that unless you generate a very high shot or one with some spin, you're not holding a green. If you have to pay the full price ($69), play somewhere else. In it's current condition and staff issues, it's really about a $40 course. Bar staff (and food) are very good, which is about the only thing that saves this from being a 1 star reveiw.
Decent Golf Course
Layout is great but the greens are very firm and don't hold. Most greens putt relatively good but a few are bouncy. t's a good course for the money. Staff is good and take care of you for the most part. Girls in the bar and restaurant are friendly and are quick to attend to your food and beverage needs.
Great Layout - Love Zoysia Grass
I don't get to play this course often but love it when I do! The challenging layout makes it fun but fair. Zoysia greens are fun to putt on (line stays true even though a little bumpy right now) Generally, all bunkers are ground under repair.
Attention course management: It seems the course is set up to start on the 10th hole not the 1st. I would think pace of play would be vastly improved by doing so. Especially since the 1st hole fairway is a blind tee shot (from the rear tees). And the back 9 holes have less trouble lining the fairways, Just my 2 cents!
Great Course
We have played this course twice and both times had a great experience. The course is still largely dormant which I usually don't care for, but the grass was in great shape. Greens were starting to grow so they got a little bumpy but true.
We will be back again and again.
Fun course
This Lee Trevino designed course is challenging. Well place water and bunker. Challenging and love it.
Beautiful Day
We had a terrific day to enjoy this course. The traps were in poor condition, the greens were hard and fast and the fairways were in good condition.
Update 4-24-20:
Stricter social distancing measures are now in effect:
-Walking only
-Driving range closed
-Clubhouse closed
Course is starting to dry out and greens have been sanded.
Fairways are in good shape but greens will not hold flag high approach shots
Still a reasonable option if you bring plenty of drinking water and don"t mind walking.
