Great time
Played 2 pm on a Wednesday
Nice conditions. Friendly staff. Good practice facility. Pace of play was awesome 3 hrs and 15 mins. A lot of fun.
Fast, hard greens
Stonewall Orchard is a fair test of golf best suited for players who can consistently handle forced carries over marsh and water. Layout is excellent, with rolling hills, and a variety of options to choose.
Greens were very hard and fast (apparently a USGA qualifier was earlier in the week) making it difficult to hold the green on many approach shots. Some fairway locations showed heavy play. Otherwise grooming was very good.
Most golfers will be anxious to come back for another round after their initial experience here.
GEESE C**P!!!
Without a doubt one of the nicest and most challenging courses in the Chicagoland area. Unfortunately you cannot take a step without walking in Geese C**p. It is all over the place. For $95 a round, they really need to get some border collies out there and get this under control. It is a shame that management has let one of the most beautiful and fun courses to play get to this point. I will not play this course again until they "clean up this mess". Too bad because it is definitely one of my favorites. My ratings of poor on course conditions and value only reflect the Geese C**p. Other than those two things, 5 Stars across the board
Thanks you for your comment and we appreciate the fact you like the course. Geese are certainly tough to combat at all courses, especially with restrictions. We do, however, try our very best to remedy the issue. We apologize if it affected the enjoyment of your round.
Blown Away
Played Stonewall Orchard for the first time. Very nice layout. Greens were difficult to figure out. Very windy day made a very difficult course almost impossible on some holes. I would like to try it again when conditions are better as I scored 15 shots higher than my average score for the year.
Thank you so much for your comment. Yes, when the wind blows at Stonewall, it can be quite the challenge. Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Stonewall Orchard
Unfortunately, had to quit after playing two holes because of the extremely rainy and windy conditions. It was 44 degrees without the wind chill. But, the first and second holes were in excellent conditions with the tee boxes were cut as tight as the fairways. The pro shop staff was very accommodating by providing us two rain checks for a later date. Although disappointed, I'm looking forward to returning.
Everything good!
Great course. Challenging but fair. Staff was friendly.
February Golf in Chicagoland!
Yesterday I got to experience one of the rarest of golfing opportunities-Shirtsleeve golf in Chicago in FEBRUARY!!-and I was actually overheating by the end of the round. Stonewall Orchard was every bit as good in February as it is in the summer or fall, the only other times I've played it. The fairways and greens had been entirely cleaned of debris, the greens rolled true and nearly as fast and with the rough not as lush, I was able to locate a couple of my "strays" a little bit easier! The course layout is so well done that every hole is memorable, but coming back to the clubhouse on either the par 3 9th over water or the Par 5 18th blind approach to water on the left side of the green is something every avid duffer should appreciate at least once. Altogether, one of my more memorable golf rounds at one of the Northwest Suburbs most stunning venues!
Thank you so much for the comment. We were equally as excited to see everyone - In Feb! Usually it's only us and the deer back here during the month of Feb. Glad you had a great time and we look forward to seeing you soon.
Stonewall such a gem
Stonewall Orchard is such a gem track. Course is always in good to excellent shape, staff is courteous, and practice area is very good. Course will challenge you but if you're hitting the ball well you can score here. Starters at the 1st tee are always extremely nice and look forward to a quick chat. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens (Greens are some of the nicest out there). Stonewall is a top 10 public course in Illinois without question. Played the tips here once and even though I'm a bomber it was a very tough day. I play one up from the tips and the yardage I believe is around 6700 yards. Love this place so much and would play it much more if it wasn't hour drive for me. Keep doing what you're doing Stonewall!
One of the Best Chicago has to Offer
A bit of a hike from the city but worth the trek. Excellent layout with unique challenges and strategy on every hole. No doubt one of the very best public tracks the Chicago area has to offer.
Actual Conditions
You must read the rated reviews above since the language is sensitive. 12 handicapper that plays 3X a week.
Well maintained
Great greens! Nice layout.
Nice track
Fun course. Really well maintained. I thought the greens were awesome. Rolled extremely true, though there were some ball marks not repaired on just about every green. (Obviously not the course's fault).
Pace of play was amazing. We literally didn't wait on any hole.
There are a lot of blind shots on this course. Just a lot of "where am I supposed to hit this?" conversations. No. 4 is very funky.
Staff was awesome. Very friendly place. We'll be back.
Strange layout
There were holes that without GPS yardage would have been impossible. This course makes you think; a lot! It is not a stand up and drill the ball down the middle 250 yards course, but due to slopes, angles and distances all shots require thinking about placement. When the wind blows like back nine yesterday this can be extremely tough course from the Gold {2nd back tees} tee box. Greens and tee box were a little chopped up, but that was to be expected in August.
A Northwest gem
Played this course twice this summer and it has quickly become a favorite track of mine in Illinois. Course layout is great, challenging but fair. Greens were pristine and true. Upon arriving, one of the staff came to my car immediately to retrieve my golf clubs which is always appreciated. It is a different layout than most courses, not just all doglegs. There are some very challenging holes, not many gimmes. Excellent value for the money! If there is any knock at all it is quite a drive from the city. I will be back again and again.
Hidden Gem
Just got done playing an early morning round, followed by a practice session on the range and new short game area. Talk about a place that does it right. Stonewall was in amazing shape for the amount of play the head pro said they have had in the last two weeks. Our group fell behind on a couple holes and the GPS alerted us we were behind. The GPS was definitely beneficial for our group and fun to use. Definitely a place that makes you feel at home and at a private club. Cant wait to make it back for another round..
bad greens, slow play
This USED to be one of the best courses in Illinois. The greens were in terrible shape, slow, and not consistent (worse than a good muni). Also, on a Sunday, there was a bachelor party that slowed the pace of play drastically. Brought my friends to play for the first time. They were very disappointed.
Thank you for your feedback. We pride ourselves on having the best greens in the state. Unfortunately, with the rain we received days prior and over 220 players on the course the day you played, the greens did take some abuse. We did our best to try and speed up the slow group referenced by having the Marshal speak to them multiple times and sending them messages through our GPS System. We encourage you to come out this fall and experience Stonewall on a day that is less crowded. Again, we thank you for playing at Stonewall Orchard and hope to see you soon!
Greens and Tee Boxes were beat up
I do not like to complain, but you asked....
Service was non existent in the bag drop
Rental clubs sucked
Tee boxes were butchered - does anyone fill divots out there?
Greens were badly spiked up around the holes and no one repairs ball marks!!
Nice layout, I'd like to play again but Thunderhawk, Pine Meadow, McCrae, Cantigny and others are much better
Staff in the pro shop were not even welcoming or engaging
Food at the snack shop (brat and hot dog) were lukewarm not even hot
We didn't even hang out for beer afterwards - we went somewhere we knew we'd be treated better
Played Cantigny last month and it was great service!!
Come on Stonewall step it up!
Thank you for playing at Stonewall Orchard and we appreciate the feedback. Let me address a couple of the concerns you had on August 7th. We had 220 golfers that day and unfortunately we had a couple days of rain prior that really softened the greens. We apologize if the bag drop was not present when you arrived, we typically have 3 working and with the busy day they were cleaning carts as they came off the course because they had to go right back out. Our rental clubs are all Titleist AP1's and in excellent shape. We have addressed your other concerns internally and assure you this is not the norm at Stonewall Orchard. We hope to see you soon and thank you again for your feedback.
We appreciate the great review and it's great to hear you enjoy our practice facility including our new short game area!
See you soon
