The Golf Club Star Ranch
About
Hutto’s been put on the golf map now that the first-class Star Ranch has opened up on what was once a cattle ranch, boasting a unique collaborative effort from the Morrish brothers (Jay and Carter) and the Bechtol, Russell design firm.
The course sits on a hill and is built around a centralized lake, featuring the typical spectacular Hill Country topography highlighted by plush, undulating fairways and bleached white sand bunkers.
No. 2 is one of the most difficult holes and the first real challenge of your golf day. The 417-yard par 4 has more of an open feel than some of the other holes, but it’s length generally means a rather long approach, and the green is surrounded by several massive bunkers.
Getting there : From Austin, take I-35 north and exit Parmer Ln. Turn right and go east on Parmer to Dessau Rd. Turn left and go north on Dessau, which becomes FM 685. Go 5 miles past FM 1825 in Pflugerville and the club is on the left.

Not common of course, but this happened one round when the cows from the neighboring field decided the grass was greener on the other side. Photo submitted by GordonATX on 07/03/2013
Course in great condition
Tee boxes and greens were perfect, ball was rolling true.
Nice course
Always enjoy playing Star Ranch. You can vary the difficulty by changing you tee area.
Very windy day, so greens were a bit slower than usual, but that may have been the plan to keep balls from moving too much.
Pace was slower than we usually play out here, but we do play quick, so not a knock, just had to wait a few minutes on each hole. Still managed to be just under 4 hours.
Beat greens in metro Austin besides the private clubs
Mind still blown. Best non-private greens I’ve putted in ATX in years. A few ragged tee boxes - move those tees!! Look forward to next round. Sorry - 4 stars is as high as I can go for daily fee courses.
Star Ranch
Unfortunately, we had very cold windy conditions to play in but thought the course would be a really nice course to play on once grass greened up and weather got warmer. Even though it was cold, there were a lot of players, but pace was good. Kept moving right along. Overall a nice course and would play there again if ever back in Austin.
Monday Rains
Played Monday morning before the bad weather came through later that evening. Have a cart cover so able to stay somewhat dry. The course was not that wet, but it was cart path only. I have seen it much wetter and carts were allowed on fairways. Would be nice if they were to allow carts on fairways and stay out of wet areas. But I do understand some people would go into those areas anyway, so just resigned to stay on cart paths.
Course in very nice shape overall, and the rains will certainly help fairways.
We did play in just over 2.5 hours, so that was a nice plus.
Star Ranch
Was a nice course to play but unfortunately weather was not. Very cold and windy. Course still had dormant grass in fairways but greens were in good shape for this time of year. Course was not crowded and was able to play in a timely manor.
Good Round, nice shape
Course in very nice shape for end of winter. Greens very good, a little slow pace but really not too bad.
Star Ranch is the best course for the money in Austin.
My favorite course to play when I visit family in Austin.. The course has well spaced tees to accomodate players of any skill level. The greens were in excellent shape when I played this March. Holes are challenging but fair. Also a good value for the quality of the course.
Nice layout that offers no nature
Far more human-made things than nature-made. Scarcely any trees and the housing units are RIGHT. ON. TOP. of this golf course. It's a fun and challenging layout in a bit of an odd, urban environment. Easy to get to and ample parking. Greens were in very nice shape. This course would be better if they planted around 10,000 trees and made it more outdoorsy. It's very strange playing every shot between apartment buildings and no natural barriers.
Great Golf Outing
With the different set of tees, great course for all skill sets. Open for most part but bunkers make shot making a priority and greens can be tricky. Really enjoyable course.
Wet day but
Enjoyed golf course since almost nobody else was out playing. Rain did make it challenging but course does drain well and greens really were in great shape.
Played in 3 hours which was great.
