The Golf Club Star Ranch
About
Hutto’s been put on the golf map now that the first-class Star Ranch has opened up on what was once a cattle ranch, boasting a unique collaborative effort from the Morrish brothers (Jay and Carter) and the Bechtol, Russell design firm.
The course sits on a hill and is built around a centralized lake, featuring the typical spectacular Hill Country topography highlighted by plush, undulating fairways and bleached white sand bunkers.
No. 2 is one of the most difficult holes and the first real challenge of your golf day. The 417-yard par 4 has more of an open feel than some of the other holes, but it’s length generally means a rather long approach, and the green is surrounded by several massive bunkers.
Getting there : From Austin, take I-35 north and exit Parmer Ln. Turn right and go east on Parmer to Dessau Rd. Turn left and go north on Dessau, which becomes FM 685. Go 5 miles past FM 1825 in Pflugerville and the club is on the left.

Not common of course, but this happened one round when the cows from the neighboring field decided the grass was greener on the other side. Photo submitted by GordonATX on 07/03/2013
Great Track Hidden Gem
What a course!
The value for the money might be tops in the state of Texas.
Greens are perfect.
Good deal through GolfNow.
Great deal through GolfNow. Course was in good shape. Greens were in good shape. Would play the course again without hesitation.
Star Ranch
Starter wasn’t paying attention. We were a twosome that should’ve been sent out ahead of a foursome of slower players. We played the front nine in 2:50; finally opened up on #13, so we finished the back nine in 2:00. All else was OK for winter conditions—greens and tee boxes were very well maintained.
Great day of golf
Played Star Ranch today. Course was in excellent shape ... greens were perfect. Plenty of challenging holes and overall layout was good. Driving range was very well maintained. We would definitely play there again.
Always fun
My wife and I enjoyed Star Ranch. All though it was quite windy. Conditions for this time of year was very good. Will definitely return.
Star Ranch... Hutto's hidden gem!
If you have not played The Golf Club at Star Ranch then you owe it to yourself to put this course on your short list. The course fairways are dormant atm but with spring quickly approaching... perfect fairways and super sticky soft greens are right around the corner.
WISH I HADN'T BOOK THROUGH GOLF NOW!!!! AND THE GOLF STAFF IS RUDE
I go to Texas once a year to visit friends and play golf in the month of January. I have enjoyed playing Star Ranch in the past on these trips.
Last year, things changed.... the golf folks went to being very nice to downright rude. Prior to that it was always a great experience despite construction on and around the course, or weather to anything else.
The other staff was and is great, but this is a golf course,,,, the golf staff should be the one's making the effort to make golfers want to come back, not the kitchen staff.
This year, I thought I'd get my Tee Time early and. Book on Golf now. It was $45. When I arrived, I went to have breakfast in the dinning area and was told that my golf now reservation didn't include food, even though that is how Star Ranch works normally. But I was understanding about it and moved on to play golf.
When I came in after playing 18, was going to play another 18.... BECAUSE Star Ranch is a ONE TIME FEE PLAY ALL DAY COURSE..... but was now very hungry so I paid the $9+ To eat lunch. (I will say the food was good, so I wasn't too upset about paying for lunch) HOWEVER, when I went to get back on the course in the club house, was told that my golf now rate was only for 1 round with cart and would have to pay another $18 for the cart to go again. It's normally $55 this time of year, which includes breakfast/lunch and unlimited play with cart. But because i used Golf Now i was not going to get the benefits of ANY of that really.
In the end, I paid the difference (and additional $10 to play on) AND paid for the food on top of that, that should have been included.
It's winter. The course is in rought shape. There really wasn't that many players on the course. If Star Ranch wants to use Golf Now to book Tee times, then they should be VERY specific about what isn't included. $10 wan't a very big discount in my opinion, but oh well, it was more about the time I wanted to start. Won't make that mistake again. There were other courses could have booked for half that. I would have paid the additional $10 up front when I arrived if I was told. All got was excuses about the fact that they have to pay Golf Now. Forget the fact that I paid Golf Now.
I will play Star Ranch again... and I am sure i will have to deal with their poor attitudes again. I will be the nice one... again. But will not play as much at this course from here on out.
Always have loved this course.
This course is challenging, undulating greens plenty of bunkers, water hazards protect some of the hole. so make sure your bunker game on point, and a are worker of the ball. No holes are replicated, each hole has it own character, the layout is spectacular. Staff was very courteous, restaurant is always on point, over all this was a great experience.
Very enjoyably round!
We really enjoyed our round here! The greens and tee boxes were in great shape for winter golf. Personnel was extremely friendly and the course marshal (a lovely she) actually took control of course pace and took good care of us. Would definitely play here again when in the Austin area!
Well maintained and moderate difficulty
First course ever p,aged in Texas. It was 70 degrees and sunny.
The greens were very consistent, although not challenging by some standards. But shots held well, some backed up, putts ran true and that was across ALL greens. Kudos to the greenskeeper.
I was in a few traps, which were clean, white, and maintained correctly. A running shot stayed on top, and high iron shot plugged. I got out of both wothghe results as expected.
Tees all were very good. Fairways also in good shape. Rough was a pain for me. I’d never played on that grass before and I screwed up too many from them, which is my fault, not the courses.
Practice areas were pretty sweet. I wish I had more time to warm up, but this amenity was above average.
The course was short and not a challenge but it’s layout. Made for average golfers but better than average maintenance.
I enjoyed the course and my day there. I’d go again, and luckily my business will have me in the area multiple times annually going forward.
Awesome Day for Golf!
Every once in awhile things are about as ideal as you can imagine. Such was my round at Star Ranch on Oct. 17. Got a Hot Deal on Golf Now for 2 players at $20 each. Beautiful central Texas fall weather. Course was immaculate. Teed off 5 minutes before booked tee time. And finished the round in 3 hours 20 minutes. I was so impressed by course conditions and the friendliness of staff including the Player Assistant personnel. Loved this outing! Thanks for Golf Now for what it does to coordinate these specials.
Above Par 4 The Course
Open course, estheticly pleasing and well maintained. Staff is businesslike but friendly so mind your golf educate. Pace of play is managed well. Greens were in great shape. It's pricey but worth the extra dough$$!! I will play here as often as I can afford it. I recommend this course.
Good Challenge
Great conditions. Good balance of short ,long par 4's. Very enjoyable. Great practice area.
Poor Experience w/Management and Staff
I've played this course many times and usually have good experiences. The course
is a good test and usually in good shape, although they charge too much $50-$60. This is not a country club or resort type course for that kind of money, but it's still a very solid course and worth playing (plus it's close to my house so can't beat that). However, had very poor experience with the staff (that really is due to the management team there). I recommend you stay away from Star Ranch for next couple weeks because they just aerated/punched their greens few days ago. The problem is they did not advise us when we booked the round yesterday (three days after they already aerated) and still haven't posted it anywhere here on GolfNow or their own website. We all understand and appreciate routine course maintenance and upkeep, especially of the greens. However, what we all DON'T appreciate is management trying to hide this from the public and charging max green fees w/o notification so the consumer can make an educated decision. We asked for a discount since the greens were unputtable and extremely bumpy. Staff member basically told us wasn't his problem and we had to talk to management, who conveniently couldn't be located at that time. Good course, very poor management. Stay away for couple weeks till the greens recover.
Course was in good condition. Only drawback were the bunkers. They could use some tlc.
Always in excellent shape!
Star Ranch never disappoints. My favorite course in central Texas, even in our Texas August weather the course is in great shape. We played a 4 pm round on a Saturday afternoon - foursome - and finished in 3 hrs. We did get a bit fortunate with the cloud cover, saved us from heat exhaustion. Highly recommended.
