The Golf Club Star Ranch
About
Hutto’s been put on the golf map now that the first-class Star Ranch has opened up on what was once a cattle ranch, boasting a unique collaborative effort from the Morrish brothers (Jay and Carter) and the Bechtol, Russell design firm.
The course sits on a hill and is built around a centralized lake, featuring the typical spectacular Hill Country topography highlighted by plush, undulating fairways and bleached white sand bunkers.
No. 2 is one of the most difficult holes and the first real challenge of your golf day. The 417-yard par 4 has more of an open feel than some of the other holes, but it’s length generally means a rather long approach, and the green is surrounded by several massive bunkers.
Getting there : From Austin, take I-35 north and exit Parmer Ln. Turn right and go east on Parmer to Dessau Rd. Turn left and go north on Dessau, which becomes FM 685. Go 5 miles past FM 1825 in Pflugerville and the club is on the left.

Not common of course, but this happened one round when the cows from the neighboring field decided the grass was greener on the other side. Photo submitted by GordonATX on 07/03/2013
Great course
Star never disappoints, its always in great shape and you can score well there. Shot 83 which is good for me.
Great track
Great layout for all levels of skill. Greens are always in good shape. Worth the drive
Broke a hundred for the first time!
Very nice course, alot of bunkers and water hazards. Nice greens.
Love the course - very unhelpful pro shop with tee time behind large scramble tourney
Our tee time was right behind a large scramble tournament that was doing a shotgun start. As we were checking in we asked if we could step on it and try to get in front of them (the three of us play at a 3 hour 18 hole pace) or even stick us out on some random hole ahead of them so we would not have a 6 hour round. The guy at the desk was not willing to acoomodate the request in any way shape or form...instead saying, "they'll play fast..." to which I replied, "have you ever actually played golf or do you just work here?". So, we asked for forgiveness instead of permission and played the first hole and then got to the 2nd hole where we saw a foursome waiting on the tee and 2 foursomes on the fairway and another on the green. We skipped the cart path and headed to 11 where the course was WIDE OPEN. We finished 18 and then spun around and headed to #2 where we got hung up before...once again WIDE OPEN. We finished our round in 3:15, no thanks to the very unhelpful attendant.
Great course
The course was beautiful and I had a fantastic round. The greens and the sand traps were in great condition and I sampled many of the traps. The new mower they used on the greens made them fast and the breaks hold true. A challenging course but still fun for all levels of golfers.
Fun Morrish design with all-inclusive touch
There are a lot of semi-private, residential golf clubs on the outskirts of Austin like Avery Ranch, Teravista & River Place. Star Ranch stacks right up with them thanks to a pleasant piece of rural land, not quite plowed over with housing to the extent of some other more-developed golf course communities, to go with a fun, playable Jay Morrish design and some nice all-inclusive trimmings to lure golfers their direction.
Star Ranch is definitely on the easier side for lower handicappers, and the middle-back tees are just a 120 slope. There are some challenging shots however, and in typical Morrish fashion, a couple short par 4s and risk-reward par 5s to make things interesting.
The facility is really good, including a large driving range and multiple short game greens. Tee times here normally include breakfast, range balls and lunch (I was particularly satisfied with the lunch buffet, which included such Texas staples as brisket, smoked sausage, fried okra and more). Also included are space-available, free replays, but don't bank on it. This joint can get busy on weekends, which can bring pace to an five hour-plus slog, which was the case for our Saturday morning round despite teeing off before 9 a.m.
Star Ranch
Very enjoyable round of golf! I and my brother-in-law were paired up with 2 very nice young guys. We had a great time.
Early Spring Golf
Nice course, played in early spring with fairways not in yet and greens recently aerated. Was a fun round of golf!
Winter golf
If you like the beach, you will enjoy Star Ranch. Sand everywhere. Like the layout and the short Par 4s. Lots of development (house construction) in the middle of course messes with ambience. Great practice facility.
Fun course
This course have always been fun to play. The par 3's are great.
Course is in excellent shape.
Though not too difficult, this is a very fun course. Lots of interesting holes, fairways and greens in excellent shape, and pace of play on a Friday afternoon was excellent! Enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to coming back.
Disappointed
The 11th hole had construction on it and had a temporary green. This was not made away to my group at anytime during payment or from the starter. The course was in Good shape other than that.
Great Track!!
If you have a drive that wanders left or right this is the course for you. Open fairways but very tough greens. Had a great time! The course was packed but pace was decent.
Great greens at Star Ranch
First time to play the course in about a year, and glad I made the trip back. Thru GolfNow, paid about $45/each incl green fee, cart, and range balls. For $7 more picked up food at the buffet before starting. Greens were rolling better than any I've played in Austin this winter, very smooth and consistent. Fairways are in good shape. Course isn't overly long unless you play the tips; pretty forgiving fairways on most holes. Wasn't overly fast pace for 18 holes, finished around 4 1/2 hours. Overall a fun course just outside the city and I'll be back fairly soon.
Good course
First of all the round of golf was fun and the food was great. I'm a little tiffed about the Golfnow.com rate didn't include the food buffet. It is if you buy it at the golf course. So I paid the Goflnow fees, paid $62 for the round and had to pay $7 more at the golf course to get the buffet. It was $69 at the course anyways. So I paid $80 for a $69 round. Golfnow needs to make sure these things are mentioned when booking.
Review from a resident.
Staff was pushing us all day, keep in mind it was cart path only. We had 2.5 inches of rain the day before so the pace of play was slower than usual & we were waiting on the group of 3 in front of us most of the day. The course had so much trash along the rough & in the water that I was a bit embarrassed. I had taken my parents & brother golfing for the first time since we moved to the course & told them how nice it was. The signature hole, #15 looked more like a recycle bin had overflowed into the pond than anything. Not quite the postcard picture they'd seen on the website. Hey staff, instead of picking up pecans here's an idea, pick up the garbage that's outlining the fairways.
One of my favorite courses
Great winter day on the links. We love to play this course, one of our foursomes favorites. We play weekly and play here as much as possible. Fairways are in good shape and Greeens are excellent. Couse is challenging but fair. Landscaping around the clubhouse is nice and relaxing. Only negative of this round was a course marshall telling us to speed up several times because groups of 2 and 3 were catching up to our foursome. Even though we completed our round in only 4 hours. But that is the only time we have had that issue there. Enjoy!
Beautiful course with numerous challenges
Each time I play this course I amazed at how well manicured it is and how clean the entire course and facilities. The staff are genuinely Texas friendly.
Beautiful day, beautiful course
The weather was perfect, and the course was pretty close. Great round, good time.
