The Golf Club Star Ranch
About
Hutto’s been put on the golf map now that the first-class Star Ranch has opened up on what was once a cattle ranch, boasting a unique collaborative effort from the Morrish brothers (Jay and Carter) and the Bechtol, Russell design firm.
The course sits on a hill and is built around a centralized lake, featuring the typical spectacular Hill Country topography highlighted by plush, undulating fairways and bleached white sand bunkers.
No. 2 is one of the most difficult holes and the first real challenge of your golf day. The 417-yard par 4 has more of an open feel than some of the other holes, but it’s length generally means a rather long approach, and the green is surrounded by several massive bunkers.
Getting there : From Austin, take I-35 north and exit Parmer Ln. Turn right and go east on Parmer to Dessau Rd. Turn left and go north on Dessau, which becomes FM 685. Go 5 miles past FM 1825 in Pflugerville and the club is on the left.

Not common of course, but this happened one round when the cows from the neighboring field decided the grass was greener on the other side. Photo submitted by GordonATX on 07/03/2013
Not worth the money
First time playing after friends recommended this course. Unfortunately it's as expensive as Avery Ranch, but no comparison as far as course condition, scenic beauty, or challenging play.
Poor course conditions were primarily water leaks. There were muddy areas on probably half the holes, in addition to numerous blocked-off areas.
There are much better values in the Greater Austin area.
Advantage - play is fairly forgiving, even on the water holes as long as you're playing the white tees.
Great golf course
One of great golf course in Austin TX area.
If i can get good deal, i will definitely play again here.
One of Austin's Best
Always in really great condition, so well maintained. Great value, free range balls, food included in the price along with unlimited golf based on availability. Very easy to get to from just about anywhere in Austin. This is an exceptional course with enough challenge from the tips for any level player and smooth playing from the whites for any regular player.Highly recommend this great course.
good condition, great value
Greens were a little bumpy from aeration but the course was in good condition overall. Had a great time and will be out there as soon as possible.
Great course
Well maintained. fairly wide fairways with some holes bringing water into play. Seems if you don't go right with your shots should be in fairways on most holes. Greens are generally protected with bunkers.
Great Conditions! Aerated Greens!
Course is great as always. From tee to green the fairways are smooth and true. Rough is a little thick, but I like it that way. They were in the process of aerating the greens. They were sandy and bumpy at times, but surprisingly still quick. I'd give it a couple weeks and the course is going to be in pristine shape.
Nice course
Star Ranch is one of the better courses in the area, in my opinion. The fairways and greens are always in very nice shape. The course is very playable in that shots a bit off target are usually playable. Star Ranch has a very good practice area as well.
A little steep
The greens need some work, they are diseased on some holes. The fairways were very nice but the rough was ridiculous... US Open-like I might add so you better stay straight or else. I find the price for 18 holes to be a bit steep actually, I'd like to see the club adjust their green fees to the low 60's.
great resort style course
Great course for the golfer looking for a fairly straightforward test. The only way you can make this course difficult is if you (as 99% of golfers do) play from tee's that are not suitable for your handicap. I would recommend this course put a handicap rating board on display (like Shadow Glen) so people will play the appropriate tee's. From what I have seen on this course, that is the number one (and only) problem. Golfers playing from the blues who can't hit a t shot 250 yards.... ANywho, this course is simple, unless the wind blows. Then you can deal with some tough times. Great condition always and wide open fairways. Great corporate outing setting as well. SIde note, as far as public courses go, this place has the best driving range facilities in all of Austin. REAL GREENS to hit into. not some flat pasture with a flag sticking out of the ground. For that matter, their membership for the range is a tremendous value if you live close by. If I lived closer, I would be a much better golfer. Staff is slightly aloof and the usual pompous attitude that you find in almost every pro shop. Cart staff is friendly as to be expected. Great value for anyone who is looking for a great relaxing course. HOWEVER, if you play this course on the weekend, be prepared for two things. Your round will take 5 hours. This is primarily due to the players playing the wrong tee's.
Great course and practice facilty
Star Ranch is a great course I play often. Conditions were good and they have complete (traps and chipping area) practice area.
My only complaint was the pace-of-play. The twosome in front of me (one good player) was way to slow and unconcerned that they were. The not-so-good player would wait for the green to clear because he just might hit the shot-of-a-lifetime following his 100 yard drive. The foursome in front of them seemed slow too.
Losing some of their greens but had a great time
First the good, It's a fun course that is not hard at all, which is a good thing if you're just looking for a casual round. the prices are usually great (especially with breakfast and lunch included for morning rounds).
Unfortunately, having played Star Ranch more than any other course in the area I must be a bit spoiled by its usual condition. However, they appear to be losing some greens, not just in spots but entire greens with dead spots throughout. It appears from other reviews they just sanded and aerated a few weeks ago, so maybe it's just a temporary issue while they recover, but this didn't look temporary. Their greenskeeper left in the last year, so that may be part of the problem as well. I'll be back out there again, but probably not for a couple months with the hope the greens make a comeback.
The course layout is great.
Star Ranch is a great course to play. After checking inn at the Pro Shop I reported to the Starter proceeded to start my round. He was very friendly and full of knowledge about the course. He even gave me tips about the course and club selection for each hole. That was very handy with being an average golfer it helped me to stay in the fairway and shoot a better score. I believe that this is the best course in town that gives you more bang for you bucks with their All Inclusive deal. With that deal they will start seeing me more often on Saturday and Sunday mornings. If you have not played this course, play it one time and I am sure you will return to play another day.
Rough greens in July
The course is in fantastic shape except for the greens. They've been punched and sanded recently, but most greens have large dead spots that are like putting in a parking lot.
The fairways were in fantastic condition.
Draft beers, including XX, are $4 after your round.
Poor/Inconsistent Greens
I used to enjoy the challenge of this course, but they have simply lost the greens. Yesterday was, well, just awful...and others in the parking lot agreed.
Sandy Greens
Course was in good shape but if I would have known the greens were sanded then I would have played elsewhere. I don't need anymore help in adding strokes!
Great Value. Excellent Shape.
First player and was impressed with the friendly staff and course conditions. Highly recommended.
Greens are in bad shape
Played here for years and have never seen the greens this damaged. Most definitely not worth full green fee rates and should be embarrassed to charge these rates. My group and I won't be back for a long while, as the greens are in really bad shape and wil take at least a season to recover.
NA
Fair condition greens, course layout is fairly easy. Good for beginners
Green issues?
I always go to Star for the course conditions... The greens are not very good right now and disappointed when other courses greens are in better shape for a 1/3 of the cost at the weekend rate.
Fun Time/Great Course
This was the first time I had played this course w/o being in a charity tournament and had a great time. Greens were a bit fast and hard to read ( ball wouldn't break like it was supposed to, haha!) The only reason I gave 4 for Value is cuz we didn't get the lunch included with the GolfNow price! other than that, with getting a lunch with the price, ya can't beat it and the drink cart is always there.
