Some argue that the tricked-up golf course has no place in today’s game, but they might change their mind after visiting the eclectic Old Brickyard. As the name implies, the course lays out in and around an old brickyard, featuring dramatic elevation changes, blind shots, and some unbelievable, almost impossible holes. This is one you’ll want to play just to say you’ve seen it.

The opening holes are pretty basic as you traverse northward before turning into the meat of the course, where the dramatic elevation changes start wreaking havoc on your club selection. After about the third or fourth hole, every hole seems to have some unique feature.

The Old Brickyard Lake comes into play on holes 9-11, some of the most difficult holes you’ll find anywhere. After you limp homeward suffering near-disasters on the tricky par 3 No. 8, which plays over water and seems to drop about 5 stories, and the demented 9th hole, which features a funky tee shot and challenging approach over water to a difficult green, No. 10 is not a welcome sight. Hole 10 plays from an elevated tee box, with water along the right. Water comes into play on the next two shots as well, since it cuts across the dogleg-right fairway. If you’re struggling, this is a double-digit hole for sure.

There’s no real break after No. 10, either. The 13th requires a precision short iron to a tiered green. More surprises await as you finish the round, so be prepared. The yard is a fun day of golf.

Getting there : Take I-45 south from Dallas to Ferris, then exit 267 and continue down the access road to the entrance on the right.

Old Brickyard 9/30/2014

The course was surprisingly green considering the drought conditions in the area. The greens were receptive to approach shots and rolled well. The bunkers leave a lot to be desired. Most of them have little to no sand so it's more like playing hard pan than a bunker.

Fun course, unique experience

I really enjoyed the course. The elevation changes made it an interesting game, the Pier to tee off of then the long drops. Hills thats dont match a typical Texas course. And they maintained the greens well, no dry patches from the heat, and they were quick too. The scenery is one of a kind for this region.
Price is well worth the game!
I am very much looking forward to playing it again.

Only negative about today's game: the Texas heat, we played in the middle of the day, not the course's fault but our own.

My best 18 hole score

I played this course with my Dad the other day and we had never played this course before. We played 9 holes and I was hooked. So my buddy and I went and played 18 on Sunday. We both played our best game ever. He matched his highest score. This course is really fun to play because of the elevation, which also makes it challenging. Teeing off sometimes 30-50 feet above the fairway makes driving the ball that much more fun. The fairways are in great shape so the ball gets a really good roll for added distance, especially on the fairways that are straight down hill. I recommend bringing some extra balls because the rough on the sides of the fairways is really thick and finding balls is near impossible. I also recommend getting a booklet from the front desk that explains each hole in detail. They gave us one, but might not for everyone. I will definitely be coming back to this place. Also, I booked online a day ahead and it only cost 24$ for both of us to ride and play 18. 12$ each! Unbelievable price!

Good conditions for an old favorite

The course layout has always been a favorite, requiring strategy and precision for many drives. Condition was excellent -- tee boxes, fairways and greens all very nice. The rough has been allowed to grow up as a "natural area," meaning it is knee high (or higher) and extremely penal. Hit your ball off-line on a lot of holes and there is no point looking for it. Unlike a lot of moderately priced daily fee courses, the water hazards in this one are full. Plus the complimentary brisket sandwich was excellent. A pleasure to play.

Old Brickyard

the course was in good shape and the terrain made the course difficult. Most of the tees are elevated and the course has a local rule for balls hit into environmental areas. The greens are pretty fast and the fairways are nice and soft.

Could Have Been So Much Better

Upon arriving early for my 7AM tee time, the gentleman in the Pro Shop said to me, "You had better start on the back 9 and play fast. We have a shotgun start across the entire course at 8:30AM every Tuesday." Why did the course not inform golfers through Golf Now about their Tuesday activities, or maybe book 9 holes only. I love to play fast. But to be told I have to is just wrong. Two other things stick in my craw, as well. First, the course is running gas golf carts. Slow, noisy and polluting the air. I know Texas is all about gas and oil, but let's get real. Electric is better. Finally, the course was horribly signed. I got turned around twice due to lack of signage between holes. There was spray painted arrows on the cart paths. Really? You can do better. Add GPS to the carts and make the course more enjoyable for golfers of every level...

Old Brickyard decent but needs work

The course had a very nice layout and very friendly staff. The driving range is basically part of the first hole and finding a ball that's yours is virtually impossible. The greens were in good shape but the weeds in the fairways were very unsightly. The cart paths were totally cracked and damaged on most of the course. Bunkers were full of weeds too. Yardage markers were very hard to find also to determine how far you were from the green. With some upkeep of the course and cart paths it has a lot of potential.

Course could use some help!

I was disappointed with the conditions of the course. I had played there several years ago and it was much more taken care of. It was a little damp that morning so your feet will get some dirt in the cleats that they didn't have anyway to clean them. The brushes on the foot pads had wore down to nothing. I thought it was only on the course but when I got to the club house I didn't want to get mud inside but the brushes to clean the spikes was worn out as well. I know they have some stiff competition moving in just north of them so hopefully they start taken better care of it.

Interesting layout

This course was a little rough around the edges, had some really interesting and challenging holes and others that seemed a little short and straight forward. Elevations changes up and down were a big part of the course. Course knowledge is a must since there are some blind tee shots and safe places to lay-up on approach shots if you know they are there. #9 is the blindest tee shot I have ever seen and there are a couple of huge elephants buried under the green. #10 seemed impossible from the tee box and didn't get much better from the fairway. The greens are getting better. The Front 9 are still lumpy and bumpy but not sandy anymore. The Back 9 roll pretty smooth but are a little on the slow side. Overall good experience and a steal at the GN Hot Deal Price.

Aerated and Sanded

GolfNow is usually very good about warning you when the greens are aerated and sanded. This course was not flagged.
The front 9 was HEAVILY sanded and aerated, making the holes a joke. Very disappointed, frustrated and angry! The ball collected wet sand on it as it rolled, and it eventually falls to one side so much sand builds up on it.
This was a total waste of time and money, it's not golf. I needed a sand shovel, not a putter on the greens. Having said that - only the front 9 was like that - the back 9 was normal and played just fine. I liked the lay-out, but buyer beware - call the course first. I am not from the Dallas area, so I had no idea that courses aerated this time of year. Apparently some in Dallas/FTW area does. This was not an enjoyable round of golf, except to say the guys I played with were great!

challenging course beware the sand.

Very fun and challenging course. Front nine greens ste burnt to a crisp and the amount of sand on them felt like I was chipping and putting into and in a bunker. Back nine was flawless overall the whole course is a great change of pace from other courses in Dallas

Greens are much improved

I love this course with lots of elevation changes. I played a month ago and the greens are much better now. Unfortunately I got caught behind a tournament for about 9 holes but still managed a 4 hour round. A must play for the value when traveling south of Dallas on I45.
