No Frills Donald Ross Design
Flat terrain, classic elevated Ross greens. We played on a weekday and were finished with 18 holes in just over 3 hours. Friendly staff.
Fast greens
Course was in good condition. The fairways were just aerated should improve them now that a lot of rain is scheduled. Great layout always fun to plat
Highly Recommended
Been trying out a lot of new courses over the past 6 months with some good & some bad results. New Smyrna GC earns A's all around the board. Was greeted by a very vibrant and upbeat woman who was a delight to talk to and allowed me to go out early with the threat of rain in the area. Once on the course everything about it was great. Best tee boxes I have seen this year and fairways, although thin in rare spots, played beautifully. Greens looked like they may have been punched a month ago but rolled nicely and were very tricky. Pace was great as I finished in under 3 hrs. & I'm a deliberate golfer. Finished the round with a delightful meal at the pizzeria which was on the premise. Great day and will return with some friends. Thank you to all of you!
Nice course and fun to play
Course is in excellent shape with a few fairway dry spots. Maintenance does a great job keeping it up and the greens are fast & true. Always enjoy playing here.
Golf for the stupids
On what planet do you allow a 12 person group to insist on going ahead of a twosome? New Smyrna Golf club did this, despite said 2 some already being halfway to the green. A twosome that plays 18 well under 3 hrs walking. The 12 players would have never been held up. They insisted however because their tee time was first.
Beautiful Greens
Excellent quality for a low-priced municipal course. The greens are outstanding. Some of the fairways were very soggy but I was told that they're overseeding and transitioning from Bermuda to rye for the winter so that's understandable. Our electric golf cart was in excellent condition. The clubhouse was dated but still fine and everyone was very friendly.
Great muni!
I enjoy this course whenever I'm in New Smyrna. Nice green complexes by Donald Ross, with decent paspalum surface. Play moves right along. Reasonable conditions for a muni with tons of play.
Great old layout
They just don’t do it like this anymore. Great use of land holes are great and varied. Course has some condition issues. Fairways could use some drainage. Greens great bunkers good. Played twice pace of play was slow and slower. That was the only negative I have.
Great muni
I enjoyed this Donald Ross municipal course very much. Newly renovated greens with paspalum grass in great shape. Good fairways. They've apparently removed some bunkers, so not as challenging as some Ross courses, although the familiar green shapes are present. Very walkable.
A Donald Ross Gem
I have played this course several times over the past six years. Condition has varied from fair to pretty good. Our group hadn't played it in the past year and had heard that the city had resurfaced the greens and seriously upgraded the rest of the course. The greens were fast and smooth, the fairways were excellent for this time of year and the traps were damp but nicely dressed. I've heard that Donald Ross would design courses when he vacationed in Florida and I for one am sure glad he spent time in New Smyrna Beach. What a pleasure to play, but you need to play it more than once to understand the "Ross" nuances.
Great value
Donald Ross track
Great value
Make sure you eat in their restaurant
New greens
Take the "Donald Ross" name off this one
Donald Ross did the original design which was updated and much improved by Bobby Weed while keeping the Ross feeling. The latest update removed many traps and moved the remaining ones away from the playing area and flattened out the greens. Paspallum greens are now featured and as of right now are quite good, but based on the track record of the greens keeper, it is only a matter of time. The fairways are thin and filled with weeds and really require "preferred lies" if you can find a place to play from. Not worth the morning rate....wait until after noon for the reduced rate and good luck
Open layout
Most memorable feature is the sparse landscaping on almost all holes. There are a couple of palm trees every 50 yards along the fairways, with some occasional water far to the side. No real OB since the fairways are adjacent to each other and the rough is not deep. So it plays very open. Even the tee boxes appear to be close to the previous greens because of the lack of shrubs or grasses between them.
Greens were in good shape and fairways were a seven out of ten. Strange to mention, but the concrete cart paths were in better shape than most courses with no major heaving or separations.
Similar to Placid Lakes CC, Spring Lake Resort Cougar Trail, & Pinecrest Golf Club
12:52 tee time w/ couple of buddies for hot deal price of $19.96/ea thru TeeOff. Fun, old style municipal course designed by Donald Ross. Small greens putting surprisingly faster in front nine, slower but truer in back nine. Tee boxes in good shape. Wide tee shot landing areas. Fairways pretty plush. Battery powered carts w/ windshield & rain cover in back.Would definitely play again.
Exercise for new golfers
This golf course, why they called a feed.
golf course.
Close this course, to be in 1 year maby one of these.
The greens are not long -very long... with masterpiece of repair parts.
The fairways- their no fairways there only ruff weed.
Dont go there, we paid 18.00$ box and its a steele. This is a 5.00$ value with cart.
Never play there again- very disapointed...
what happened to the greens
While course still has a good layout something is very wrong with the management of the course Greens look like no one who knows anything about grass is running the mowers patches , holes and general lack of consist grass on the greens Did the mowers use a brush hog on some of the fairways? workers think its funny to mow in the course and follow you around. in stead of mowing the greens 18-1 so a golfer only has them once they mow any old green they want and sometime they seem to miss half the green . Not a course to recommend
