Palm course
Spend the extra 10 dollars to play the Pines course. The greens looked to be in much better shape.
Pompano Beach
Wife and I played the last day of our golf vacation. Picked up two players one was a native. The other guy was only playing 9 holes and was from Canada. Had a great time. Was a real windy day. Course was busy and in good shape. Day was warm also. Found the course challenging.
Great value with Hot Deal!!
Please please people fix your ball marks!! Other then that all was good even with the greens being dressed with a bit of sand.
Public Municipal Course at Best
I had heard good things about this course but then I made a tee time and was unpleasantly surprised. I was scheduled in a foursome yet the starter tried to send me off on the Pines Course with a twosome and my reservation was on the Palms. I was early so I went to the bar outside to order a bite. I asked about how long for a sandwich, and the reply was about 10 minutes or so. I figured great, I have about 50 minutes until I tee off. My sandwich came in almost 25 minutes later. I was drinking unsweetened ice tea, which I didn't get offered any sweetener. I had to reach behind the bar to get it myself, but all the different sweeteners were all clumpy in the packets. I played the Palms in a 3-some at scheduled tee time after lunch. The course was in pretty good shape if you kept it in the fairway. There were several blind shots with only a scorecard diagram and a diagram at the tee to show the layout of the hole. There were spotty yardage markers on some sprinkler heads, with 200, 150, and 100 markers on the fairways. The greens were pretty small, and didn't hold real well. They were fairly true but not like what I've been playing on lately. There was a cart for beverages on the course which was a plus as there was no water coolers on the course. It was almost 4 hours and 45 minutes to play and we were behind a 4 some, and added another to become 4 ourselves at the turn. I liked the layout, and signage said Greg Norman but here it says Bruce Devlin. I will probably not go back as this municipal course loads up with anyone that wants to play. For the same money I can play some nicer courses in a bit better shape and get a bit better service and be catered to a bit more. Just my preference I guess. I'd rather see grass in the rough if I miss the fairway and have the grass just a little longer in the fairway so I'm not on a tight lie trying to hit a 3 wood. I like bigger greens that are receptive and the ball will stop on. I would rather not to play bump and run from around the green. The traps should have sand, not be hard pan. My opinion. Play here if you want. But I probably won't be back. The bar area is good for a maybe at Happy Hour when not golfing if they have some live music.
Good course for locals in season
a lot of work being done on the course on almost every hole, adding hundreds of trees donated by 95 construction. Not a bad track for the money during the season down here.
Great condition.
Pines course is in great condition. Greens almost perfect. Only downside is weekend rack rate a little steep.
Nice shape
Couse was in very good condition, especially since it was a holiday weekend. The pace was reasonable throughout the round, with the exception of a back-up at one hole... partly due to the cart girl making a long-over due arrival. The only other issue we ran across was the short game practice area was roped off and the range used mats on this day (not usual practice in my experience at this course).
All in all, a nice day on the links which helped bring out the best of play I've had in a while. :-)
Ok
This course is a new addition to the Golfnow reservation system so it's going to have some issues to be sure. There are a lot of local players here who just show up and go and of course our tee time was hijacked by one of those groups. The starter even told that group not to tee off but they did anyways. Luckily they played fast so pace of play wasn't an issue and the price was great for this time of year.
Overall the course has a few interesting holes and the layout is good, the fairways are wide which is good because the rough (actually way overgrown weeds) is extremely penal. If you're not in the fairway there is a good chance that ball is lost. Tee boxes and Greens were in ok shape as were the bunkers. Staff was friendly and there is a great sports bar, Galuppis, for post round food and drinks.
Not a 4-Star coarse
I had not played the Palms coarse in over 20 years. It recently started showing up on Golf Now hot deals, so I thought I'd give it a try again. It was also rated as 4 stars, but only 5 reviews on Golf Now. It is NOT a 4-star coarse. At best it is a 3-star coarse. Many tee boxes were in poor shape. several greens were patchy. The greens were also inconsistent as far a putting goes. Some were soft and slow others were firm and fast. Many of the greens were what I call "postage stamp" greens. In other words small, which I don't like. The fairways were ok, but also had some bare patches. The rough was weedy, but I guess that's why they call it rough. The bunkers were in ok shape, but again some were soft and others firm. There was a lot of worker out on the coarse laying sod and other maintenance, so it looks like things may get better. The best thing about the coarse was the beautiful outside bar area and its view. Probably won't play here again. I may try the Pines coarse though which was about $7 more on the Golf Now Hot Deals.
incredible turnaround
After a renovation in 2012, the course fell into disrepair in 2013. New management took over in the fall of 2014 and the course is headed in the right direction. Continuous improvement has followed. Great overall conditions with wind direction making club selection vary greatly from round to round. The three four holes are make or break for any match with 17 being one of the hardest par 3's in south Florida. Well worth the trip for any northern visitor.
Pines Pompano review
The course was in excellent shape. Even though there had been torrential rains for days, the Pines was dry due to the excellent drainage system. Most courses in the area were either closed or cart path only that day.
Above average course
The greg norman design is very nice. Course condition in the last year had improved drastically. There is plenty of grass in the fairways, greens are nice roll at about 9. rough is patchy in spots but overall medium and challenging. $35 in the summer on weekend mornings, discounts in the afternoon. Course usually has an afternoon breeze coming of the ocean just 1 mile to the east. Highly recommend.
Not too bad
Good prices and decent layout. Maintenance is below average - reflected in price to play.
great course for the money
Solid layout, Greg Norman's design is fair yet challenging
