About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business.
The Hooch Golf Club sits along the Chattahoochee River in Duluth, sprawling across a scenic landscape covered with ponds and lakes. The course is an executive, par-61 layout that combines traditional features with modern challenges. Although there aren't any par 5s on the golf course there are a few holes that stretch to over 400 yards, which guarantees that you'll be using all the clubs in your bag. There is plenty of water throughout the golf course, including three holes that play right along the river. It might not be what you're looking for if you want something truly formidable, but for a short course it's a good challenge that provides excellent iron practice. Besides the golf course, The Hooch is also known for its 12-acre, lighted driving range. There are also putting and chipping greens with a deep-faced practice bunker.

Needs some attention
Played The Hooch often over the years with "beginning golfers." Still good as a place to introduce new players to the game, BUT needs some attention to a few areas. The rough is too long. This is not a matter of difficulty as much as slow play due to searching for wayward shots. Balls that are short off the tee (as many beginners are) get lost in long, thick bermuda rough. Balls lost in the woods or water are part of the game, but balls just off the fairway should not be lost or take an all out search to find. Looking for a playing partner's ball last weekend led to finding 5 balls in the rough within 10 paces of the fairway, so others must be having a similar problem. Also, tee boxes should have AT LEAST one yardage marker. When course maintenance is forced to move tees the scorecard distances become useless. With a marker somewhere on the box, at least you can step off the distance. Otherwise, "blind" hitting that leads to more time searching.
Course has unique issues
Played morning 10/9/2013; the ritual of repairing ball marks is a courtesy that only a few playing this course have observed; and providing rakes for raking the sand traps at this course must be like providing toothpicks for a toothless man (one sand trap even has cart tracks in the bunker). The greens should be high rated, if not for the many ball marks left on most of the holes. There is a uniqueness not seen on other courses: 2-golfers thought they could play hole better, so they returned to tee box and played hole again; another pair finished 18 holes and continued playing the back nine again. Antics like those can explain why taking 4 hours to play this short, flat course.
Rating this course is difficult: fairways in great shape, practice facilities are maintained, green fees are very reasonable priced, but their other issues are pronounced by the golf hackers ruining this course. You would think management would seek more responsibility and respect of the games standards. Until then, I'll play at other courses.
Very good value.
I was down in the Atlanta area for vacation and picked a few courses to play while in town. The Hooch worked great as it was only 15 min from where I was staying and you couldn't beat the deal for some of the tee times on GolfNow. In terms of the course, it has a few challenges and I think the back nine is better than the front. The course was fairly well maintained and except for one day (I played the course three times over the week) the pace was fine. It was perfect for a quick round to get out and play - but if there's others in the area that are better.
MADE LONG HOLE
I LAKE WORK VERY FRIENDLY .
FEATURE MORE VERY CONDITION
GREEN AND FAIRWAY
Didn't enjoy my time here
Snooty atmosphere. Back 9 tee off right on the edge of a neighborhood, very stressful for beginner-intermediates who don't want to break a window. Very strict cooler and alcohol rules, good place for a family I suppose but not for those who best enjoy golf with a cold one. Front 9 was more enjoyable. Beware they charge $10 just for someone to ride in the cart with you (who isn't playing). Be prepared to lose a LOT of balls here on the back 9 if you're fairly new to the game.
Good course
Since I live relatively close to The Hooch, I consider it and its sister course Peachtree Golf my "home" course. I've played The Hooch probably 200 times over the last 3-4 years and generally have a good time playing it. This round was fine despite the fact the greens were recently aerated and sanded.
Don't Be Fooled this Course is a Challenge!
This executive Par 61 is a challenge. This is not just some chip and putt! With 7 Par 4's and 11 Par 3's from the Blue tees you'll have use of every club and shot in your bag.
For those who want a nice walk the course layout is perfect. With the exception of 9 to 10 the distance between holes is minimal.
Most afternoons I can get thru in less than 3 hours... many times just over two making it ideal for a quick practice round.
So so
Average course.
Poor green quality.
But economically acceptable.
Nice Executive Length Course Challenge
I played here for the first time on Saturday 9/7/13 and enjoyed the layout. Playing from the back tees pulled out all my clubs. There were a couple long 180 & 205 yard par 3s which was a nice challenge. With water hazards, greenside bunkers, and at least one
dogleg hole it made this outing pretty interesting. I will be gping back for revenge soon lol.
Great value
Short but moderately challenging course. Greens in good condition. Some areas of rough we're too long making it hard to find ball, but will definitely play again.
great course for ironswork
Since I was playing alone (foursome canceled), Marshall allowed me to tee ahead of tee time
Very Good for the Price
For the price, The Hooch is a good value. It is also a good course for younger or less experienced golfers. For golfers with a single-digit handicap, I think they will find it rather easy. I have a 9.4 handicap and shot 70 on this par 61 course, playing ok, but not great. Overall, I would definitely play again for the same price ($32) or less.
short course and fun.
short course mostly par three's and a lot of fun and a good course to practice on . I'll be back when back in Atlanta
Good short course to work on short game.
Nothing fancy nor difficult. Good fast paced course where one works their short game and basics.
Back nine is more challenging
A nice course. Challenging enough on the back nine. The only negative is the ball divots on the green. Its not the course but the irresponsible players.
I played a couple of days ago and someone had plugged a ball into a green about half way down and never bothered to remove it!
Let alone repair the mark.
There was a foursome in front of me and I repaired all their ball marks. I don't get it.
Overall good value and fun enough.
Nice executive course - needs work
Cart path (what path) never have I played on course with carts paths in this condition - have played all over the country -35 years military retired - yes played in Korea and SEA never did I see cart path in this condition.
Your cart paths are costing you money - the wear and damage to carts
Next time my hire caddy and walk: Be safer and hearther
Great course.... tall rough
This course is in good shape... fairways and greens. The rough is really tall, so if you don't stay in the fairway frequently, you can expect to lose a few balls. Price is reasonable.... but keep in mind, the course is executive.
Great little track.
Good value and set up. Small and crowded, but you expect that due to location and price. Greens in good shape even with tons of unrepaired ball marks. Good place for beginners and you get lots of iron practice. Will be back for sure
Gentlemen, Start your mowers!
I played early morning on July 26, 2013. If you missed a fairway you were in very high rough that would exceed the standards for the pros at the US Open. I missed a few fairways by 5-10 feet and could not find my ball. On several holes where they'd mowed, the dried grass camouflaged balls. Please keep the rough mowed & raked.
On the plus side, the practice facility: driving range, putting and chipping greens and adjacent sand trap set-ups is excellent.
Staff very unfriendly, grass needed to be cut!!!!
Grass was extremely too high, golf marshall on duty was rude to say the least, customer service and course was manage poorly. I will take off my list of courses to play even if was free.
