Slow Play
Didnt see a ranger all day and pace of play was a huge issue. They needed someone out there to keep it moving.
Great Value
Interesting Layout for this course but great for short game practice.
Cart won't work…foot-golf anyone?
Being a peak time on the first nice Saturday in a few weeks, we expected slow play. We did not expect most of the delays to be due to the foot golfers that were playing alongside, across and over us. Never played foot golf, but evidently the game does not observe the same etiquette as golf.
We also expected some less than ideal course conditions as well. It's early February, we get it. What we did not expect were uneven tee boxes with no grass and half empty hard-packed bunkers.
And then there were the greens. Hole placement was ludicrous. On seven different occasions we rolled puts to less than 1" close to the hole - only to see them momentarily pause and then and roll back two or three feet.
And to top off the experience, one of our carts died. An experience two others in my group had here before. Good thing we were close to the clubhouse (9th tee) because our repeated attempts to contact them by phone went unanswered.
Simply amazed that this course has had so many positive reviews.
Glad I played for $17
Who ever decided to add the soccer golf is killing this place. Honestly If I had payed the full $27 fee I would have asked for a refund.
Good luck finding the correct flags and your way around the course. Tee boxes are garbage. Greens are in good shape as the usually are.
Will I go back? Probably as it can be a good little place to work on the irons, but I will only at a much discounted rate due to condition.
Horrible golf course
I have no idea how their reviews are as good as they are! First, this is supposed to be a quick and short course. However, they were so backed up from letting twosomes play that it took us over 2 hours to finish 9 holes. Second, the tee boxes and general course conditions were horrible but that’s pretty much expected for a $25/round course. Third, our golf cart completely died at hole 12. We called 4 times and left 2 voicemails and no one would answer nor call us back. After waiting for 15-20 minutes we ended up having to pack up all our stuff and walk back to the club house. As we were walking back there was another pair of guys pushing their golf cart into the parking lot! When we got to the club house they were apologetic and we requested our money be returned to the credit card we used. The course GM said they are having major cart issues and gave us a “free round”. After I asked about the credit to our account they stated that’s what the free round was for, which we obviously didn’t want another round at this course. He did refund our money but overall it was a complete waste of a day. Don’t trust the reviews!
Challenging course
It's all about where you place your approach shots. If you have trouble with your irons, you won't like this course. Only needed the driver twice. Some pin placements were impossible to get close to without the ball rolling off the green.
Improvements!
Today I played this course for the 4th time since June. The course allows for all levels of experience. After the first time playing and talking with the manager, he stated "we are working on improving the course" I can tell you that they have. They have addressed the tall grass not rough as they called it where you lost a ball 3 feet from the fairway and have worked on the overall image of the course. As a single playing later in the day, you have the opportunity to play multiple balls for the true practice round and work on tailoring your game. I definitely will play again on my visits back to the area.
Good golf chanllenge
Steel Canyon is a short course with several challenges along the way. Some of the fairways are wide, a few were very narrow to sharpen your skills for hitting the ball straight! There were a couple of holes your had to hit over water and some with lots of brush to lose your ball in. I thought it was very good and short enough to grab 18 challenging holes for all levels of golfers.
beginner course
Being a beginner golfer (less than a year) I enjoy getting out on this course. For one its cheap and two the friendliness of the staff is excellent. Guven that this used to be a landfill you can't have huge expectations. For an executive course with 2 par 5s, this course is just so fun!
Great Value for the money
It was my third time playing this course, and I enjoy it better than the last couple of times. I found a good deal on Golf Now twice (under $15 for 18 holes) and the second time I use a coupon that a guy i played with gave me. The staff is very friendly, food and drinks are at great price. some tee boxes needs some major work and it will be nice if they have trash cans at least every other hole. I started my round on Friday at 3:00pm and we didn't wait once on the tee box. I will recommended, i will play here again next week.
An Adventure!
I have never had so much fun playing a round of golf. Every hole is unique and unlike any other hole I've ever played. The greens were in phenomenal condition, and excellent value for the 22$ I paid. I will definitely be coming back!
Needs some TLC
I like this course and the staff is very friendly, but this is a get what you pay for type of place. My main complaint is the tee boxes are borderline terrible and this is a par three course so the majority of shots are from the tee box so they do matter. basically the tee boxes are shot out, the fairways are so so, the rough is pretty rough and the bunkers are wastelands. The greens are in pretty good shape right now though. This is the place you come after work with a buddy to have a few beers and play a few holes or if you are big time hacker. They don't have a problem with coolers. It is not the place for the person who only plays once a month and wants a nice round at a nice course. Normally they are very busy but were pretty open when I played. A similar course to this one is the hooch in Duluth but it is further away and a little more pricey. It is much nicer though.
One of the worst courses in metro Atlanta
Easily one of the worst courses in metro Atlanta. This course will teach you that it is worth paying an extra $20 to golf at a nice course rather than "bargain" hunt. This is a $32 par 3/4 course with only one par 5, and a ridiculous hole setup. Most of the par 3's are less than 100 yards. The course conditions were terrible. The tee boxes on 11, 12, and 13 are glorified cow pastures with sand traps that are literally falling apart (many sand traps had no sand - just the liner). The course is challenging simply because the tee boxes, fairways, and greens are terribly kept, if at all. Also, this course sits under electrical power plant towers - a creative use of the land but with towers and poles often sitting right next to the fairway, this is a bad course to play. Also, EXTREMELY hilly and they use electric carts. We saw 3 different twosomes have to abandon their carts because they were not fully charged. If you're in the Sandy Springs area, drive out a little bit further to Stone Mountain or East Atlanta and pay a little bit more for a better course. Absolutely awful.
Great course for the money.
The only problem is the bunkers. They need to be improved. The other problem is the players who really do not care to rake the bunkers and specially, damaging the cups when replacing the flags. Maybe a ranger is needed to remove those infractors. We do not need those people.
Good little prcatice course / club w/ rude help
I've played this course probably 20 - 30 times thru the years. And used the driving range maybe an equal number or more.
This course is exactly as you'd expect. Its a little rough. The greens are a C- and the wait for people to play on is forever.
On the flip side; the course is laid out nicely for what you get. Since most scoring on a regular course happens after your drive, this is an excellent course to work in pitching to the green's and working on ball placement relative to pin placement, etc.
Also, the patrons are normally nicer than nice. For example, a group of three allowed me to play thru on the 3rd hole; and another on the 14th. The people at the club house are normally beyond courteous. I did run into a rude person this time, and it was not normal. Was first time I'd seen him there and hopefully he shapes up or ships out.
Absent that one individual, I will return and play on. One moron, won't ruin this little course or my desire to grin and bare it.
Fore!
This course is gr8 test on your short game
A very fun Challenging course from the tips, greens were in good shape but some of the tee boxes need work.
Great for your Game
Steel Canyon really makes you focus more on shot making because the course appears to be narrow and really tight in specific areas on the course. I personally, because it was my first time playing this course had an extra heightened since of needing more touch than playing a course with very wide fairways. The greens offer some relief to Steel Canyon tight fairways because they are a not small. This allowed me to attack the greens confidently. The course is not gimmicky with silly wavy and hilly greens. I will play again!
