Good iron practice
Decent course and good iron work. Good value for price and course conditions.
Great practice course.
This is a great small course for the money and the greens are always in pretty good shape.
Enjoyed the challenge
The course may look fairly easy, but is very deceiving being a links course. I enjoyed the challenge, and definitely going back soon.
Great staff, well kept, awkward location
I would give the course a higher rating, however it's just an awkward location next to the power lines and the layout takes some getting used to. Once you get past the first 4 holes you forget about the power lines (until 9, 10 and 18).
It helps that we went on a beautiful day, but the course was surprisingly very well kept (with the cheaper rates we thought it might be a junkyard, but it was no where near that).
The one glaringly, but fixable, issue was poor course markers. A few locations were a bit confusing even with the map on the score sheet.
You may get lost if you don't watch
The course is really tight between holes and tees. Really confusing around 7,8, 13 & 14. Had a bunch of people coming around the back start to play the front. Greens are really nice, hold and rolled pretty true for a course a lot of duffers play. Rough is a little high and you can lose a ball easily. As evident by the numerous balls eaten by the mowers laying all over the place. All in all, pretty good test for higher handicapper or beginner.
ummm...4 players in 2 carts playing out of 1 bag?!???
This is a course built on an old land fill that can give you some work on your iron game with a variety of par 3's, a few of which have some nice elevation changes.
The main issue I had was that I teed off behind a foursome playing out of 2 carts, only 1 of which had a bag with golf clubs. After 3 holes of this, and not being asked to play through, I called the pro shop from out on the course on hole #4 and told them I was stuck behind 4 players playing out of 2 carts and 1 bag. Pro shop didn't seem like that was any big deal, and said he would "try to come out to see what's gong on." HELLO?! I just told you what's going on - 4 players, 2 carts, 1 bag! What is there to "check out"?
And so, another 3 holes and 45 minutes later, I was still stuck behind 4 players, 2 carts, and 1 golf bag - nobody from the shop came out (even though there were two people working the shop when I checked in). I eventually just drove ahead and played the back 9 in an hour and 15min.
Moral of the story: while we can't do anything about inconsiderate golfers, we can choose not to return to a golf course that has no problem permitting 4 players in 2 carts to play out of 1 bag. I shall not return. Would you?
Short Course for a great savings
Played here a few times and although not overly challenging with only 2 par 5's it is close to home and for the price is hard to beat.
Holes packed together
I only paid about 15.00 for a round and cart here so I can't complain too much. It was much further than I thought from my house and taking 285 and trying to make a 8:00am tee time should have sent a reg flag in my head. Nonetheless I made the trip. The holes are so close together here which makes for less trouble to get yourself into but also less shade. It was scorching that day and beers quickly turned into H20. Not that the rough was overgrown just thick grass that you could lose your ball easily if you didn't have a ten foot radius you knew where it was. No hole was particularly challenging. Proshop was a mom and pop shop with no bar or restaurant. They tried to fire up the forman to get me a hot dog but was unsuccessful. All in all for the price you can't beat it but no high class by any means. Good beginner course
Great for the money
It's not Augusta, but the twilight rates are awesome. Very short, executive style course. Greens were in surprisingly good shape. Rough will eat you alive.
Good shape
My only complaint was if your ball leaves the fairway .it's a goner. The rough needs to be cut a little lower, your average Steel Canyon player is not a pro and will be trickling balls off the fairway.
Good Challenge
Overall, this a nice little challenging course. It can be played quickly in 3 hours or less, but there are some slow pokes that can turn it into 4 hours. For a short course, it has a very good variation in holes and is fun to play. I like it.
Goose
Geese everywhere. Greens are in good shape too. Ruff is tall.
A nice up and down Course
Excellent value for the money, play during a weekday and it moves fast, I actually played 18 in 2 and half hours
Great Test, Great Price, Friendly Folks
Having moved from Atlanta about two years ago it had been a while since I have played Steel Canyon / Blue Heron. The new mgmnt and greens keeper have done and great job in making this a great place to play. They have made a lot of improvements that really make a difference in the overall golf experience. The new champion greens are fantastic. It is a course that demands you keep the ball straight...or you'll loose them. The rough is very tough. Very nice folks as well. Great experience...it's good to see the course thriving. Note to beer drinking patrons - shame on you for tossing all your cans in the ravine next to the 11th tee box.
Decent course for costs
I've played this course many times and it's gone through some mostly positive changes. A few years ago, it was closed because all the greens burned up because of a fungus however, they've really gotten back on track and everything is in fine shape.
This course was okay
Located on an old dump site, it was okay. In decent conditions, but tough to play for the first time. Holes were not layed out at the tee boxes. Decent for the money spent. Had a good time
Great course
Fantastic course, quick challenging greens, awesome staff. The rough is thick enough to penalize wayward shots but not U. S. Open difficult. I will be back often.
Great Executive Course
I live very close to Steel Canyon, so when I'm pressed for time or just don't want to drive to and spend more on a full sized course, I head out to Steel Canyon for a round. For an executive course, it has a great variety of holes and a few that are pretty darn challenging. I played there on 7/22/2013 and the course was in very good shape. The course has greened out very nicely, the greens are in good condition and the few places you can hit in the rough is a nice challenge. Fairways are also in great condition and you almost always draw a good lie. The staff is always friendly and a pleasure to deal with. Pace of play can vary depending on how crowded it is, but I usually end up playing in under 2-2.5 hours with 2 or 3 people. If you're looking for an affordable course to work on your game or just have a good time at, it's hard to go wrong with Steel Canyon.
Friendly for my doughter
Well maintained putting green and rough grasses has been cleaned recently.
