People in clubhouse were great. Course was okay for an executive par 3. I would go back.
Generally the course was in okay shape. The greens were airated in the past week or so which always makes putting difficult. That coupled with the fact they placed a couple of the pins in locations that makes three putting feel like you just rolled in a birdie. Some of the tee-boxes were a little rough including one that a mat was provided. However, the folks in the clubhouse were very friendly and very helpful and there were no hold-ups. I would go back.
Good fun close to ATL
Recent storms hit the course pretty hard, doing damage to the driving range and some of the holes on the course. Even with that, the course was in pretty good shape. The greens could use some work, there were a few bumpy ones.
Pretty good pace of play, even with a lot of beginners. Wouldn't hurt to have a staffer ride through the course though, lots of carts pulled up close to greens. I think it was from people who just didn't know what not to do.
Would not recommend paying the white tees though, too many 115-125 yard shots. The back tees seem to offer more variety in distances off the tee.
Great beginner course!
Great course for beginners. The greens look great! Amazing and friendly staff.
Really nice executive course for the cost.
Booked a tee time around 11pm the night before on Golf Now even though the Steel Canyon website showed no available times. Course was not crowded at all on a beautiful Sunday morning. Course was very well maintained. Lots of sand traps make it a challenging course for the length.
Frustrating experience
I played Steel Canyon a good bit last season. Great when I just wanted to go play on a whim. It has never been in great shape, but for less than $20, it was worth it.
However, the course's condition has only become worse and more frustrating to play. The holes are really narrow so unless your tee shots are in the middle of the fairway every time, be prepared to lose some balls. The grass goes from fairway to deep shag quickly in a lot of areas and finding balls becomes nearly impossible even just a few feet off the hole. No rangers to maintain rate of play. Greens are bouncy and poorly maintained. Lots of dead spots and muddy puddles.
The management also recently decided to start playing R&B music at the practice range which I found very distracting. Staff is friendly on the right day, but I have experienced some attitude as well.
I like to relax when I am golfing, and my 2 recent experiences at Steel Canyon have been frustrating and stressful. I won't be back.
fun
This is a good example of a short course that is fun to The elevation change on number 4 makes it very challenging.
I will be playing this course again.
Great Started Course for My Son
I took my 8 year old son out to play 9 holes. It was a good course for this purpose. The guy in the clubhouse informed us that my son only pays his age to play so it was only $8 for him. There were a couple of par 4's on the course. The only thing worrisome is that the entire course winds under some major power lines.
Not a good place to play. Don't waste your money.
Let me just start by saying the young genltleman in the club house was very nice and came out to point us in the right direction.
The cons:
Slow play. A single in front of us playing three balls and not waving us through.
Groundsman changing the tee markers as I am about to set my ball. Very bad etiquette.
We had to wait for about 5 minutes to get the attention of other groundsmen as we waited to tee off.
Ponds are polluted as is evident by floating dead turtles (not a good sight to see)
As we finished the ninth hole, the single was still teeing off and a twosome was allowed to play ahead of us. Would have been a five hour day. We packed it in and left after nine. Not a good experience, no course monitoring. Won't be back. If you want a fun, short course, go play Charlie Yates in East Atlanta which is well run, well-maintained and worth every dollar. Even Peachtree Golf Center is better than this. Thank goodness I used GolfNow to book it.
Had fun!
This is a good course if you are looking for a tune up round. It was my first round of the season and I had a good time. The course is not in great condition but I have played worse for more money.
Great Views
The course was an open course, no tree lined fairways. It was a bit hilly with overlooking views of greens to be hit.
A good links course. Can get crowded
A good links course, rewards good shot making. Can get very crowded which dramitically slows play.
A nice up and down challenging course
We played just the back 9. The staff is super friendly and goes the extra mile. The course itself features a relatively EZ layout if you are precise. Too far left or right gets you in lots of trouble. You need to use the slope around the greens on your approach. Overall, a fun experience.
Short fun course.
I went on a Sunday afternoon-the first nice one in a while so the course was packed.
I stopped in the pro shop to pay the balance of my Golf Now purchase. The guy behind the counter tried to charge me $31 plus tax when I bought a $24 tee time on Golf Now. It took about 15 minutes to get a manger in and straighten it all out but the staff were friendly about it. They mentioned their system has been having problems talking to the Golf Now system lately. In fact, there was another Golf Now customer having the same issue as me while I was waiting.
It was pretty busy on the day I played and there was no starter, which may have been part of the problem. My group was third in line for tee #2 while a group was finishing #1, another group was on #1 tee and it looked like at least 3 more groups waiting to tee of on #1. It seemed to me there were many novice players on the course which slowed pace of play.
The course was pretty wet and it looks like a lot of the players there like to drive their carts through the wet parts of the fairway-there were some areas that were pretty rutted up.
Most of the tee boxes were overused and needed attention.
Greens were firm but maintained.
The underlayment in the bottom of the bunkers to prevent sand from sinking into the soil was ripped and sticking above the sand in most bunkers.
All in all, I enjoyed playing the course. There were a lot of fun par 3s and some fun elevation changes.
Good Track for the Money
Tee boxes and fairways need some attention, but greens were in impressive shape. Length of course does not require a driver and 3 wood is needed only occasionally. A couple of very challenging par 3s. Course has significant elevation changes throughout which makes for some challenging shots/lies. Several holes are well protected by bunkers. Overall, a good value for the money. I will definitely be back.
Very fun course to play
While Steel Canyon may not be the prettiest course I've ever played (due to the power line towers and lack of trees) it was definitely a thrill to play. I really enjoyed the diversity of the holes and the many elevation changes. I'm not a very good golfer so I found the course to be fairly challenging. Again, I definitely loved playing here, the staff was kind, the course was very well maintained, and the greens were beautiful.
Great place to play with my 10 year old...we will be back for sure!
Pro shop staff were incredibly friendly; course was decent for this time of year and most of all my 10 year old son and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We will be back often!!
Fun track
Fun, quick little course. Every hole has some little challenge to it, and the elevation changes give the course some real character. The kids cutting through the course from the adjoining apartment complex were a little distracting.
More challenging than I expected for a short course, great value.
We were only able to play nine holes because of the cold weather. The course was in good shape for this time of the year. I am looking forward to going back when spring finally gets here.
unique and challenging
A unique and challengig course! The course has lots of hills and contours which lends itself to many chalenging approaches. Uphills downhills and sidehills are both scenic and difficult. Accuracy is key to a good score.
Although an executive course it has plenty of par 4's and even a 500 yard par 5. The greens are in very good shape for this time of year. Well worth a few hours in the sun :-)
Fun executive course with nice elevation changes.
Good course and has good challenging shot values. Uphill and downhill approach shots are well mixed and the length of the holes are well varied. There is one par 5 with a fun 2nd shot playing downhill toward a well bunkered green. Number 12 is a short par 3 to a green that sharply drops off down a 30 ft hill. Even balls hitting the green can roll off and down the hill. The new Champion grass greens are too bouncy and spongy for me but after they topdress a few times this spring they will become better to approach shots and putts.
