Mike Strantz disrespected
I adore this track and am a huge Strantz fan...unfortunately the staff, maintenance and most importantly the management is so poor that I will not return. Booked on Golfnow with the range balls option so I could warm up...arrive early and the range is closed and no offer made for the additional charge. I played 9 holes and left because the condition of the greens and course were so far from what I imagine Stantz invisioned. Starter was down right rude. Here’s where it gets real bad. I left my brand new range finder(top of the line bushnel) attached via the magnetic side to the cart frame. I called back less than an hour after I left and spoke to Janna, who seems uninterested and unconcerned. I asked her if she could check my cart and or call down to the cart barn and check immediately because I was 100% certain of where I left it. She then hung up on me, I called back 5 times and she refused to answer the phone. I left a VM and was never called back. I have called back 2x now and spoke to Chip the manager...explained the situation and I owned the fact it was my fault for leaving it, yet there was zero apologies for any of the aforementioned. Unfortunately the amazing track will no longer be in my rotation or on my recommendation list. Sad, I truly love this course and Strantz designs, but a golf course is only as good as the team that cares for it and it’s patrons...this team in my opinion has an extremely dis functional approach to how they care for the course and their guests.
Mountain Golf :)
Lots of blind shots, very hilly. Cart path only made for a tough round. No ranger on course and 4-some in front of us were slow as molasses and never offered us to play thru (as a 2-some). We waited on literally every shot. It was clear those guys only cared about THEIR finishing before dark - didn’t matter they created a (no exaggeration) 5 hr 36 min round! I’ll probably go back, assuming it is not cart path only!
Awesome as usual
Little cold and wet but if you wanted easy, why would you play here ?
Exceptional
All things considered ( winter, unbelievable amount of rain in the last month, rolling terrain, etc.), Tot Hill is in wonderful shape. We were delighted to find that the fairways played true and were not matted down due to several inches of rain recently. Tee boxes looked good. And greens were cut tight and well-rolled, stemping nicely around 11-12. We finished in 4.5 hours, which a very good pace for this course. We highly recommend!
Unique Must Play
Good greens, fairways and tees. Layout very different with lots going on. A one of a kind course that challenges everyone who makes the drive.
2nd try at Tot HILL Farms
Well the greens are still a big challenge, this course has 18 unique holes with more opportunity for trouble than one could imagine. But large language g areas. The only way to score is to be a straight and calibrated shooter
amazing course, pin setter in a bad mood
Great course, very fast and tricky greens, shot 81 with 5 three putts and a 4 putt on 17 from the left. Loved the landscape. Going back this week, hoping the grass on the greens has grown overseeded fairways are always nice in the south after frost.
Did not appreciate having to pay extra $10.00 for an extra cart so I could take my special needs son.
Tot Hill Farm
Please read all of this...
This is golf you won’t see anywhere else! From the first tee on, there is just something unique on every hole to wow, impress, terrify, or inspire you. I’m not sure how Strantz found some of these holes but it had to be quite an undertaking. With all the rocks, hills, slopes, and wild turning golf surfaces, Tot Hill Farm must be a bear to maintain!!! From what I hear, this place has very little money coming in to help with that, so for what I’m assuming is an already taxed maintenance crew, they do an excellent job with what they have! Does that mean the fairways, greens, rough, and sand are top notch playing surfaces? No. The fairways are good but aren’t perfect, the greens run mostly pure but struggle from lack of sunlight in some spots and from heat in others. The rough sometimes varies from grass to weeds in places. The tee boxes are hit or miss: bare in some spots and just fine on the rest. It’s sad to see one of the 9 Strantz designs has changed slightly....a portion of the 13th green is not mowed anymore, and a couple bunkers gone on the 18th. Hopefully someday that back portion on 13 will be back, because I bet Strantz thought that was really cool. I’m not sure how much more money you’d need to get this property looking “perfect” (though it’s probably a lot), but as it stands, it stills plays just fine.
The coolest thing about this course is all of the exposed rock and how Strantz used it in his routing. You have to see it to believe it!
The best way to truly enjoy this place is to attack it with the right mindset. Play this course truly focusing on the EXPERIENCE, the ART, the JOY of DISCOVERY, and for FUN!!! Do this, and you will have plenty of birdie opportunities and will enjoy the overall experience, even if you hit a rock or two along the way.
As a golfer who loves architecture, and knowing that there are only 9 Strantz courses in the entire world, I strongly suggest you play Tot Hill Farm! The more people play this place, the more funds it will get, and the better experience down the line it will be. I hope this place always stays around and can get better year after year. It deserves to make it, so please, if you’re in the area, go play Tot Hill Farm!
A Mike Strantz Gem and North Carolina's Best Value Public Course
Tot Hill Farm offers a roller coaster level of fun for a cost far less than other public courses in central NC.
Designed by the famed Mike Strantz, Tot Hill Farm incorporates a course layout that is totally unique and wildly enjoyable. From blind shots and giant slopes to perhaps the most beautiful collection of par-3s I've ever played, this course offers so much for a very reasonable price.
This course's reputation as being one of the toughest courses in the country shouldn't scare you off. With a little course knowledge even a mid-handicapper can score well here and nearly any golfer can have fun even if their scorecard doesn't look the best at the end.
If there's one place to critique, the course conditions could be a bit better but they aren't bad by any stretch. They get the important things right: the greens roll smoothly and look great, the bunkers are well taken care of, and there's no issues on the tee boxes or on the fairway. It's just a little rough around the edges, but for what you're paying the course easily overperforms!
I can't wait to come back and play this course again and again, it really is THAT good!
Always Fun
Played Tot Hill again with several buddies and it never disappoints. The course was in fine shape and the crisp fall weather was perfect. Only down side was one of the course Marshalls was borderline rude.
Unique Experience, would like to go back!
I got a great hot deal with the app. The only issue is I only got to play three holes of this course because I was called back to work. But 100% going back with friends. Staff was friendly and excited to go back and play the complete 18.
