Was suppose to receive range balls and a free meal, but the range was closed, so we were not charged for the range balls and did not receive the free meal.
Courtesy call back
I was unable to play Tot Hill due to rain from Hurricane Beta. However, what I appreciate is a call from a member of their staff the day prior to my tee time warning me of the rain and potential closure of the course. I called the next day and cancelled my tee time due to the heavy rain No issue from the clubhouse. Very happy and look forward to a future round.
Gimmicky layout, slow play, poor management
I played here on a Sunday and play was S-L-O-W. Several tees had two parties waiting to tee off. The ranger was on the course but didn't seem to be doing anything to move play along.
The layout itself is dramatic and pretty, but I'm not sure I'd call it fun or fair. You'd need to play this place a half-dozen times to figure out all the right landing areas, how much to club up for the extreme elevation changes and wind, and how to take advantage of the severe contouring. If you're new to this course, expect to be harshly punished multiple times for what by all appearances seem good shots.
Finally, I was surprised when I arrived to find that this course observed *no* COVID-19 precautions. No one wore a mask, not even inside. The starter got WAY too close to me when sending me off, especially given that he was not wearing a mask. This is the first course I've played during the pandemic that operated this way, and had I known in advance I would not have come. I include this information for others like me who would like to know whether they will feel safe playing here. I did not, and I won't be back.
Beautiful day , great layout !
The course is so Unique and off the “chart “When you speak about its creativity. Six years ago when I played here my first time I did not sit back and enjoy the layout of the course because I was so consumed with how I was playing on such a difficult golf course.. Today was very enjoyable as the pace of play was nice no one pushed us. On the tee boxes I had a moment to look at the beauty of this course. As far As the course goes it puts a premium on accuracy off most of the tee shots . Make sure you play the correct distances to your golf skill as it won’t be enjoyable if you try to bite of more than u can chew. The only think that could of been better is the greens although most of them are in good shape there are a few that need a little work. The greens are very receptive but it appears that a lot of people don’t like to fix there ball marks. I will definitely be back to play as I moved to central NC a couple of years ago.
Awsome challenge!
If you like tobacco road you will love this course for sure. This was my first time playing here and man its challenging. Your shot placing strategy has to be spot on in almost every shot. For high handicappers I probably wouldn't recommend this course to try to get better scores. But for a fun trip and for the price u cant beat it the views are amazing it's almost worth the 50 bucks just to see the layout! All in all I will be back to conquer that place!
Fun Course
If you want different, play here, a very unique course.
Very hilly
good challenging front nine but the greens are not the best at all. There fast which I like but sandy.
Need a Ranger
The course was awesome but the pace of play was horrible. Group in front was slow as $&@l and no one came out to speed up the pace. It too is 5 1/2 hrs to play
Great Course
I love this course because I can play with lower handicap players and still compete. It's not based on hitting 300+ drives, which always helps, but not a requirement here.
Challenging course
Rolling course is great. Tests your skill at hitting down or up to fairways and greens. Greens were recently aerated and filling in nicely. Great views from several of the holes.
greens must of just been plugged and sanded
in the past when i was on Tee Off and tried to book a tee time and the greens had just been plugged, it warned me that they were recently done plus the fees were less expensive than normal.
Challenge yourself at this place
Visualize your shot and if you miss it, it could cost you! Extremely challenging but not long so you don't get discouraged from hole to hole.
Mike Strantz in the Mountains
This was the 3rd Strantz course we've played. We were a foursome of single digit handicappers. We had a mid am tee time on a Saturday morning. It was crowded but the staff handled it well. "The Staff" consists of a cart guy, a lady at the snack bar, a lady at the cash register and a starter. All very nice and helpful. The "clubhouse" is a modified double wide trailer. The range balls are something you'd see at a muni with many of them coated with mud. Our round took 5:20. We waited every shot after the 2nd hole. The layout is typical Strantz with over the top mounding, undulation and elevation changes. Once you get off the fairways it is overgrown and largely unkept. The views are fantastic and the course could be beautiful with some additional TLC. The carts are gas powdered and noisy. Some of the cart paths are mud and/or gravel which are rutted with potholes. The back nine is very interesting with the 16, 17 & 18 being absolutely beautiful. The fairways are in great shape. The greens are Bent grass so the 90 degree heat has taken it's toll on them.. We found them to be bumpy, slow and wet but held approach shots very well. Overall, this course is worth playing because it's one of the few Strantz designs. It's in dire need of some TLC in the outlying areas of the course. Bring your patience and keep it in the fairway.
Plan ahead ....... be ready for a few curve balls.
This is the 3rd Mike Strantz course I've played - Caledonia and Tobacco Road - are over the top / world class. This one fell short. But, because of the back 9, I would play again. No range balls, not much to purchase in the pro shop (reconditioned golf balls vs. new sleeves) and not enough riding carts (and they had 2 per cart, you DO NOT want to walk this course). Jimmy at the bag drop was a lil outta sorts - not sure of: tee times or the actual pin placement location - we had to figure that out on the fly. The women in the pro shop checking us in and running the snack bar were good. Shop the greens fee on Supreme golf, GolfNow or call the pro shop and come prepared. You'll enjoy the layout once you get past the start.
