Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club
About
Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Del., is a 145-acre public course, billed as a “natural treasure.” The 18-hole championship course gets the moniker thanks to its surroundings -- the ancient forest of White Clay Creek State Park. The 145-acre play, acquired by the state of Delaware in 2005, is a par-70, 6,323-yard golf course that features rolling terrain, smooth bent grass putting surfaces and scenic vistas. The mix of memorable, distinctive holes adds to the difficulty, as does the memorable, heavily wooded setting and dramatic elevation changes. Before or after your round at Deerfield Golf Club, enjoy the large putting green, full-service practice range, or lighted tennis and paddleball courts.

Beautiful course, but extremely hilly
The course is lovely, but it's difficult for short hitters. There are a lot of uphill shots . A couple of par threes I needed a driver and still couldn't reach the green. It was a little frustrating. However, if you're a long, straight hitter this course would be a nice challenge.
very enjoyable
Had not played Deerfield in 2 years before this past Friday. The course is shaping up nicely and the greens are 85% recovered from aeration. The rest of the course is in very nice shape. Even when you are a guest here, you still feel like you are a member for a day and treated very nicely. The pub is really good here and I always make sure to eat and drink when visiting. As a golf course, Deerfield has a great mix of holes. On the front 9, you'll be severely tested by holes 8 and 9 which are a long par 3 and long par 4. Both play uphill and far longer than the yardage suggests. The back 9 gems are hole 10 a dogleg left par 5 from an elevated tee and the long par 4 14th hole another dogleg left from an elevated tee. There are quite a few short par 4s that require precise short irons and these are holes where you can score on. Looking forward to returning soon when the greens are fully recovered.
Great golf course!!
Always a pleasure to play at Deerfield. The staff are very welcoming and hospitable. As for the course, it never disappoints.
Weekend Play
Having played this course multiple times last year, I was extremely impressed yesterday for my first time out to Deerfield. Last year there were some major pace of play issues, but they started using the GPS trackers this year that let you know if you are on pace or not. Saw a ranger out making sure there were no significant gaps in play. Had a slower group in front of us but we still finished in 4 hours. If you haven't been to Deerfield, make sure you get out there! By far my favorite course in the Philly/Wilmington area. It is a beautiful course, a lot of great elevation changes, and well kept. Now that the slow play is being addressed I will likely make an effort to go there more often!
Challenging Course
Great Course! Although, not a Course for beginners.
Nice course
Beautiful setting with lots of trees and steep hills and inclines. We enjoyed this course, but wish we had known the greens had been recently aerated, making putting very difficult.
Challenging Course
This course is very challenging with a lot of elevation changes. Not many flat lies here! The course is not very long even from the tips. Still the elevation changes make it challenging. It was very windy which made it that much harder. I love this course. Staff is top notch.
April Round
Course is in great shape, greens have been aerated recently, imagine they will be in great shape in another month or so.
greens :(
Loved the course but they always aerate and never let the greens get fast.
Course in good shape, even in early spring
Even sand traps in much better shape than most nearby courses. Always a hilly, challenging layout
Golf in February
Golf in February is a treat in itself with that being said this course was in great condition. The pace of play was fine as well, my partner and I were able to finish within 4 hours. The ranger actually let us play another set of holes. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants a challenging hilly course with moderate width fairways and small greens.
Good with discount
Paid $27.00 for what usually is a $54-$65.00 round. Course in nice shape, did have a group behind climbing up tail, hitting up on us back due to a slow 4 some two in front. Somewhat annoying, but not enough not to go back!
well maintained, challenging layout.
Somewhat reminds me of a Donald Ross design; tree lined fairways reminiscent of a Carolina layout. The front nine will keep you on your toes, the back nine offers a bit of a breather. Keeping in the fairway is vital! Quick greens with subtle breaks- if you're above the hole, you're in trouble. Senior tees do not detract from the challenge...
True test of skills
Have played Deerfield numerous times but got a great Golfnow deal. This course is a challenge even for the advanced golfer due to its length, tight fairways and fast greens. It is a true test of skills, as you will need to think your way around and not just pound the ball around the course. Discretion is the best way to manage your game at this course. The views and course condition make it a must play for anyone who wants a great course at a reasonable price. After your round, the bar/restaurant is a great place to relax and enjoy some good food and drink.
Always Enjoyable
I have played this course a number of times. It is always in excellent shape. They just aerated in a number of area's, but overall this course is maintained like a resort course. This was the first time my friend played this course and he loved it. I was really not pleased with the customer service this visit. Not close to what it used to be. Hoping they were just having a bad day. We'll see next time
