Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club
About
Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Del., is a 145-acre public course, billed as a “natural treasure.” The 18-hole championship course gets the moniker thanks to its surroundings -- the ancient forest of White Clay Creek State Park. The 145-acre play, acquired by the state of Delaware in 2005, is a par-70, 6,323-yard golf course that features rolling terrain, smooth bent grass putting surfaces and scenic vistas. The mix of memorable, distinctive holes adds to the difficulty, as does the memorable, heavily wooded setting and dramatic elevation changes. Before or after your round at Deerfield Golf Club, enjoy the large putting green, full-service practice range, or lighted tennis and paddleball courts.

Challenging Course
This course is very challenging with a lot of elevation changes. Not many flat lies here! The course is not very long even from the tips. Still the elevation changes make it challenging. It was very windy which made it that much harder. I love this course. Staff is top notch.
April Round
Course is in great shape, greens have been aerated recently, imagine they will be in great shape in another month or so.
greens :(
Loved the course but they always aerate and never let the greens get fast.
Course in good shape, even in early spring
Even sand traps in much better shape than most nearby courses. Always a hilly, challenging layout
Golf in February
Golf in February is a treat in itself with that being said this course was in great condition. The pace of play was fine as well, my partner and I were able to finish within 4 hours. The ranger actually let us play another set of holes. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants a challenging hilly course with moderate width fairways and small greens.
Good with discount
Paid $27.00 for what usually is a $54-$65.00 round. Course in nice shape, did have a group behind climbing up tail, hitting up on us back due to a slow 4 some two in front. Somewhat annoying, but not enough not to go back!
well maintained, challenging layout.
Somewhat reminds me of a Donald Ross design; tree lined fairways reminiscent of a Carolina layout. The front nine will keep you on your toes, the back nine offers a bit of a breather. Keeping in the fairway is vital! Quick greens with subtle breaks- if you're above the hole, you're in trouble. Senior tees do not detract from the challenge...
True test of skills
Have played Deerfield numerous times but got a great Golfnow deal. This course is a challenge even for the advanced golfer due to its length, tight fairways and fast greens. It is a true test of skills, as you will need to think your way around and not just pound the ball around the course. Discretion is the best way to manage your game at this course. The views and course condition make it a must play for anyone who wants a great course at a reasonable price. After your round, the bar/restaurant is a great place to relax and enjoy some good food and drink.
Always Enjoyable
I have played this course a number of times. It is always in excellent shape. They just aerated in a number of area's, but overall this course is maintained like a resort course. This was the first time my friend played this course and he loved it. I was really not pleased with the customer service this visit. Not close to what it used to be. Hoping they were just having a bad day. We'll see next time
Enjoyed the course
Played for the first time and really enjoyed the course. Greens were in very good shape and were most of the fairways. Course is challenging as there are many elevation changes. Price was very fair in comparison to other local courses.
nice track from a picky guy!!
yes, I am a bit of a public course snob, meaning when i pay $50 or $60 , i expect a good value. I am an 11 handicap and play all throughout the mid-ATL. Deerfield delivers. A very traditional layout, tree lined, tight a fair amount, a number blind shots which is challenging, not knowing the course. The greens were fantastic. Approach shots held, rolled out very nicely, quick. Not lightening but quick - fun, challenging to be sure.
i played from the tips, which is short at 6350 but plenty of challenge still
Really only one course criticism - the sand traps were very inconsistent. Some were fluffy, full of sand, others very hard, firm. the firmness killed me on 2 holes, i was frustrated at that, almost hard pan sand.
Excellent Course; Difficult Challenge
My son (25) and I (60), both high handicappers, played Deerfield on a beautiful summer morning. Course was in great shape (except for one tee box), played at a fast pace, and was quite attractive. Course is EXTREMELY HILLY--don't try to walk unless you're in "iron man" competitions. Most holes are "blind" doglegs. The hills make the par fours effectively nearly fives (we played from the whites). It/s a challenging course, but we feel it was worth it--we had a great time. We had lunch in their pub, and it was excellent as well. Price was very affordable thru GolfNow.com.
Pace of play
Waiting on every hole and shot overshadows the condition and setup of this course. When 3 somes hold up 4 somes there's an issue. Overall a nice course to play.
Deerfield
Wonderful facilities and friendly staff. Went there first time for a wedding ( they did an awesome job) so I wanted to come back and play the course. Looks were unfortunately deceiving. The design of the course is somewhat quirky. The biggest disappointment by far, was the greens. The greens should be in perfect shape this time of year instead they looked like they never recovered from when they were aerated
Very happy Father's Day!
Staff greeted us with a smile and pleasant conversation. Golf shop quickly got us signed and ready for our round. Because of it being Father's Day, I am guessing it was more crowded than usual. Pace of play was still acceptable. Course was in nice condition, and a challenge. Had a wonderful round and experience. A return visit is in my future.
Up and down
The course has a lot of elevation changes and you will end up with a lot of side hill, uphill or downhill lies. Greens are receptive and roll at a decent pace. There can be some very challenging chip shots due to the undulation, firmness and speed of the greens. Some holes tended to slope off the back but that is an adjustment you can make for future rounds. The sand in the greenside bunkers makes shots very playable. I wish more courses uses the same type of sand.
Nice course.
It's always fun and challenging to play here. Shot placement is key if you want to score low at this course. The only downside was all of the geese droppings on a few holes - some even on the greens.
