Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club
About
Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Del., is a 145-acre public course, billed as a “natural treasure.” The 18-hole championship course gets the moniker thanks to its surroundings -- the ancient forest of White Clay Creek State Park. The 145-acre play, acquired by the state of Delaware in 2005, is a par-70, 6,323-yard golf course that features rolling terrain, smooth bent grass putting surfaces and scenic vistas. The mix of memorable, distinctive holes adds to the difficulty, as does the memorable, heavily wooded setting and dramatic elevation changes. Before or after your round at Deerfield Golf Club, enjoy the large putting green, full-service practice range, or lighted tennis and paddleball courts.

The Rangers to enforce pace of play !
I play here Friday 8/14/15 the course was in really nice shape requires a lot of different shots this is not a course for a high handicapper I played a 5 hour round be the Rangers never enforced slow players to speed up we complained to a ranger and he never really even said like ok guys I'll look into it nothing! And there's no water coolers on the course except for water fountains.. Really? Who really uses those anymore?!
Enjoy the day '
It's have golf should be , the front nine nobody was on are back couldn't be more happy with the outing will be back again soon !!
First time players of this course will definitely want another shotat it.
Many tee shots at Deerfield, greens are out of sight..off the tee box, placement is extra extra extra important..take notes, you will be back.

Mixed feelings
It was my first time playing Deerfield. I showed up as a single and the starter tried to set me up with a twosome but they refused. I played as a single with the twosome waiting on every hole since I was playing behind four. One of the foursome dropped out after 9 but the remaining three didn't ask me to join them. I played the whole round as a single behind 3 and in front of 2. I found it very odd the starter or someone in the shop wasn't more insistent. The pace was 4 hours which isn't bad but a busy course on a Saturday they should never have let me out.
Very disappointed.
There was no ranger to control the players pace.
It took me an extra hour to play 18 whole. My teetime was 9:30.
It wasn't my first time playing at Deerfield and I pretty liked it before.
But this time it was so bad, I'm not sure if i want to go back and play...
bring a camel
Course in great shape. It was 90 degrees out and there were no water coolers set up on the course. Two water fountains (really), one on each nine, that tasted like warm ....! You can't bring a cooler out and they gouge you for water. Shocking for a high end golf course.
Deerfield golf - July 10, 2015
Signed up as a single but was paired up with 2 other singles, both of whom were nice guys. Had a good round, the course was in excellent shape, and for $20, could not be beat in this area.
Deer me, the elevation changes!
Hole #1 is too difficult and tricky for an opener. The left part of the dogleg is severely downhill and bordered by tall trees on the corner. Lots more big elevation changes in store and few flat lies. Greens were in just average shape and a little slow. Tees were OK, not great. Fairways were good and traps were well-manicured. I wouldn’t want to play this every day, but it was a fun and challenging change of pace. Slope of 6,005 yard White Tees was 131.
Good deal at my $28.
Great course and conditions
The course was in great shape. The course is really hilly. It is tough to find a flat lie. Even though it is hilly it makes for all kinds of different shots and is fun to play. We got a great deal $35 (usually $65 round) on a Sunday morning thanks to golfnow. We played the round just under 4 hours. I would definitely recommend this course to others and I can't wait to get back out there and play it again myself
Great course design
Deerfield was in pretty good shape. Went on the Fourth of July, it rained moderately for a few hours basically until I got to the course and you couldnt even tell it had rained. Moderately challenging.
Huh??
Only live 10 minutes from here and play here as often as I can? Great layout and usually fantastic conditions. Played as a twosome and went off at the perfect time because we played in less then 3 hours. However, I never knew that they or any course would airiate the greens in JUNE...?? Made putting a bit of a joke, especially when they did not even fill the holes with sand. Cart path only from all the rain we've had around here but, we were the only ones respecting that!! Cart girl waved to us as we went off the first hole but, we never saw her. She must have left at the hottest part of the day, Clueless!!!
Challenging & Fair... A place to play for sure
Had a 12pm tee time. Pulled up at 11:50am (running a little late obviously since it was about an hour drive for us), starter was right there at the bag drop. Grabbed our clubs and had our cart 100% ready for us in about 1 min. Walked in the pro-shop, paid right away, used the facilities and teed off at 11:59am. Awesome! I am starting this review with the people because they were great. Very friendly and the experience felt like a country club. 5 stars for the staff.
For the facilities.... the pro shop was nice and was stocked with a nice selection of balls, shirts, hats, tees and everything else you could need. I did not check out the prices but if your buying anything at the pro shop anywhere, you should know you are paying full retail prices. Bathrooms were very nice. The bar and restaurant looked very nice as we walked past it but never actually got to make it inside for 2 reasons... 1) the beer cart girl was at the tee box waiting for us as well pulled up which was sweet and 2) when we wrapped up the round, we were going to eat there but there was no-one in the bar area including a bar tender so we just skipped it since it was an hour drive home for us. We saw the beer cart at least 4 times in the round which was nice and she had plenty of ice.... A big plus!
For the course.... This was our first time at the course so there were definitely a few hard lessons learned for not playing it before but that is always expected for a new course. I am on the longer side off the tee avg about 270-280 yds with the potential to get it out over 300 yds. I should have kept the driver in the bag most holes to play the course correctly but I didn't and my score on some holes definitely reflected that. This course is all about placement and trying to find a flat lie (which there are few of by the way). Play the roll off the side of the hills and go with the terrain. You're toast if you don't so keep the ego at home. My dad who is very straight but not very long (200 yds off the gold tees) would have eaten me up for breakfast here for sure because most good landing spot played back from the greens. Get too aggressive and your playing from a 45* slant and its tough to get it close. Pace of play was very good. Only choked up at 9 and 18 which wasn't too bad honestly. Tee boxes are just about the only flat lie you will find all day :-) and were kept nice. Greens were fair, not fast and not slow which is a perfect speed for the course because if they good country club or top end course fast (which is how I like them) you could easily see an increase in some 3 & 4 putts with maybe a ball rolling off the green depending upon pin placement. No many if any ball marks on the greens and they were rolling true. Fairways were nice when I found them. Rough was fair and not too long where you lost a ball in the rough. Only saw gnats on the 5th green which is at the edge of the course and I huge plus for me. I pulled the Off! out after that hole but honestly didn't need it the rest of the day.
Overall a really good experience and a different type of challenging course to play. I would definitely recommend this course to play at least once in the season if you bounce around like us within an hour driving radius and will most likely get back to this course once or twice more to get some revenge.
Rainy couldn't damper
Course was in great shape despite heavy rain in the area for the past 3 days. Slight mist the entire round but course was in such good shape it didn't matter. Great round overall!
Tough but fair course
Had a really lovely day playing here, it's a beautiful course, has challenging greens but it's fair to the average golfer overall.. Will definitely be coming to play here again.
great course
Great course. Challenging with easier holes spread throughout. Greens were too firm for how small they are
Quality from tee to green
One of the nicest public courses in Delaware, greens were fast and true, sand was fluffy and the fairways and rough were nicely groomed. Definitel a must play.
Fun and Challenging Course
It's a very cool, hilly course, with a friendly staff - would play again
Great course
Great condition for this early in season. Staff always the best. Very satisfied
Great course
Great course especially when you play for the hot deals. Nicest course for the value in the area.
Great course
For the money you won't find a nicer course in the area. I have played here a dozen or so times pace of play has always been excellent - staff is friendly - food is good - will be back lots in 2015. Wet course today with some temp greens but you expect that this time of year and for the price I couldn't say no.
