Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club
About
Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Del., is a 145-acre public course, billed as a “natural treasure.” The 18-hole championship course gets the moniker thanks to its surroundings -- the ancient forest of White Clay Creek State Park. The 145-acre play, acquired by the state of Delaware in 2005, is a par-70, 6,323-yard golf course that features rolling terrain, smooth bent grass putting surfaces and scenic vistas. The mix of memorable, distinctive holes adds to the difficulty, as does the memorable, heavily wooded setting and dramatic elevation changes. Before or after your round at Deerfield Golf Club, enjoy the large putting green, full-service practice range, or lighted tennis and paddleball courts.

Great track
Deerfield is a course I played once before in a tournament from the league I participate in. That was two years ago and it left a great memory that I have been promoting this course ever since and recently just got back to play it again. The course was in great shape for November. I played on a cold windy Saturday so lots of wooded debris was blowing on the greens which added some time to brush some of it away. Beyond the debris, the greens rolled true, and can prove challenging with the varying undulations you get to experience. The layout is great with a lot of rolling elevated tee boxes and greens to make it and interesting elevation change for the player. The facilities look great, the staff is extremely friendly. The driving range is grass not mats so that's a plus. Got jammed up a bit with one foursome that held up to other foursomes and myself as a single, there wasn't an ability to play through that many groups. At the end of the day, it was another good experience at deerfield.
Good GC
I ALWAYS enjoy this course. Friday Nov 06 was horrible in terms of pace of play, too crowded and too slow,,, some groups in front of us did not know what golf etiquette is... oh well , we all have those days. Will be back
Beautiful course!
This was my third time playing Deerfield and I love everything about it. We had a beautiful November day to play, but the only reason I wouldn't give the course an excellent rating was their failure to speed up the foursome ahead of us. They teed off behind a twosome of women and by the time we got to the 5th hole the women were two holes ahead of them. No way a course should let the pace slow down like that. A few time the Rangers came out and watched them on the front nine, but never told them to speed it up. On the 3rd hole we drove up to watch our opponents shots and the group ahead of us stood there for almost 5 minutes before anyone even putted. When we got to the turn we were hoping they stopped for a break so we could jump ahead of them but they were on the tee. We complained to the ranger how slow they were playing and he agreed. He said one guy slammed his driver into the tee box after hitting 3 balls out of play and he wasn't happy with that. Yet he didn't tell them to let other groups go ahead he just told them to speed it up. On the back 9 they started to play faster because the ranger was following them, but as soon as he left they slowed down. They were good golfers too, but must've been playing for high stakes because they took forever on the greens. I felt bad because the 2some behind us gave up after 15 holes and turned and went back in because they wouldn't have finished before dark. When we got to the Par 3 16th hole the group was on the green for at least 8 minutes while we stood on the tee. And after they put the flag back in, they had one guy still chipping on for some reason. I think they were deliberately playing slow just to annoy people. Sorry for the rant, but slow play and management's refusal to speed up play can ruin an otherwise great day of golf!!!
Deerfield review
Beautiful day course in great shape but no marshals and it took over 3 hours to play nine holes which is ridiculous! But greens really good
One of my favorite courses.
I did not play well on this particular day and still enjoyed a fantastic round. The courses is in great condition and has enough very challenging holes that the golfer feels they have accomplished something if they play well. The pace of play was excellent and i never had to wait to tee off on the next hole. Can't wait to get back to this course.
Great rolling landscape
The course is always in great condition. Beautiful setting and a challenging layout. Numerous blind shots and well placed pins. Clubhouse has great drink selections and a very good menu.
Hills!!!!
Course can be tough, many side hill up hill down hill lies to be found, slanted fairways elevated greens and tee boxes on a few holes. Putting greens were decent for end of year and fairly fast. It is a woodsy course in some locations ,so leaves are starting to be a problem. (former DuPont course)
Short but tough
You don't have to hit driver very often here, but you better make sure whatever you hit finds the fairways. Holes are framed well, and there's always a little more room around the greens than you'd think when you see the approach shots.
Course was in great shape (recently aerated, but greens still ran true), pace of play was great, staff was great, had a great time. Definitely recommend.
Nice course
Course was in good shape and has some challenging holes. Old-style with small greens that were fast.
Great course and in good shape
I have a lot of courses to choose from in this neck of the woods but this place is a great value for the buck.
Pace of play very good.
Great Bar and food
Beautiful!!
Challenging but fair! This course is not forgiving with lots of hills!
Nice course
Although the greens had been aerated fairly recently, the course was in great condition.
Challenging Course Great Layout
First time out. Great course - both fun and challenging. There are several holes where you're not going to see where the ball is going to land. It won't be the last time I play this course.
Great round
Staff is extremly helpful and courteous. Every hole is unique and difficult.
Best bang for teh buck
I love this course. You can't beat the value of this place. Great patio for drinks after the round and a very challenging lay out that doesn't beat you up.
If you like target golf then this is the place for you
A lot of blind shots, and the fairways are hard and fast, but you better hit it in the right places, elevation changes and undulating fairways make club selection a premium , as some good shot carry through fairways into the rough, which isn't that penalizing, but its not the fairway. greens where running a little slower then we like but overall we really liked this course, and so will you
Great Course
I have played Deerfield a number of times and have always enjoyed my experience. This course is challenging and beautiful. A lot of elevation changes makes it more challenging (fun for me) then a lot of courses in the DE area. I would recommend this course to anyone who has not been before.
A Mountain not a Golf Course
The course has many elevation changes which provides lot's of blind and very difficult shots. If you miss on the wrong side your dead, and sometimes it feels like theres no good place to be at all. I love a challenge but Deerfield is a miss. It's the type of course you need to play 20 times before you ever really know what to do, and honestly you will find yourself all to often out of position even though you feel you hit a solid shot. You need your A game for sure and alot of paticence. If I play well I want to be rewarded, Deerfield will penalize you over and over no matter how well you strike it. I will not be playing here again. I shot an 80 mostly because I hit it long, thats an average score for me but I felt like I shot a 100. Very frustrating round of Golf, especially when I could have played a Gem like White Clay Creek which is only a few miles away. If you typically shot in the 90s or 100s find a different place to spend your money.
Excellent Course / Great Value / Great Conditions
This course never seems to disappoint. It's always in excellent shape. Even in the deep summer, nothing is burnt out, greens are in perfect condition.
Pace of play was a little slow, only because there was a golf outing ahead of us. But the staff was conscious of getting them moving.
Will be back again.
