Golfer Reviews
greens appalling, fairways need some atttending
This is long because this course and its regular players deserve some some serious attention:
They had just aerated and sanded the greens. Which was NOT disclosed when checking in and paying for the round. There were some greens that were heavily sanded, and others that looked like they had been done at least a week previously as they did not look, feel or roll even remotely close to the other 50%. No consistency whatsover. Most of the pins were extremely close to the edge of the green - within 10', which is technically not in line with USGA rules, particularly on sloped greens or near bunkers. Shots to the green with approach wedges were so inconsistent, either plugging on oversaturated aerated greens or skidding off harder packed greens with too much sand. I don't know why several of the Bay Area municipal golf courses aren't able to hire, and/or train their groundskeepers on how to maintain a reasonably consistent and playable golf course. The fees just got raised tremendously in the past 1.5 years. Where is this money going? In perfect conditions, teeing off at 11:30am on Thursday, our group of 4 players were waiting for a minimum of 10 minutes on each and every tee box after the 3rd hole. Where are the marshalls? I had to cut out after 14 holes - having already been out there for 4 hours! Aaah the fairways, almost all of which are severely sloped, were cut barely 30 yards wide or so on almost every hole, leaving US open like rough taking up much of the already narrow fairways bordered by 60' pines. This smacks of either cost cutting, laziness or lack of understanding on a course management perspective, or even setting basic standards for the actual groundskeepers. This course could be one of the most exquisite, challenging but rewarding golf courses in the entire Bay Area, but has been turned into a bit of a mickey mouse muni, that appears to designed to frustrate disappoint and push away half decent players who expect or hope for some basic course standards. I sincerely hope you can address some or all of these inconsistencies.
Great Hot Day Option
Living in East Bay, played Tilden on a day when temperatures there maxed out at 80 vs 98 in East Bay. Course is unusual so interesting to play. Greens ok for August but not great. Putts sometimes wobbled as they slowed down. Sand traps too packed. Some holes too close together so probably not uncommon for people to be struck by stray balls. Rough a bit thick. Try to stay in fairway!
Up and down
Surprised by a slope rating of 122 from White tees, it's a difficult course. Not in very good shape especially he tee boxes and some the greens. Play was slow a 5 hour + round. It is certainly not a straightforward golf course, some funky holes. It is a pretty site though.
Get it together please.
Tilden is an amazing golf course. Unfortunately, as with all golf course courses, if you don’t staff and support it well, it can take all of the good out of the experience and make it very negative. There was no starter out today to ensure that groups went out on time. There were also no marshals on the course to ensure that pace of play was protected. This has been a common theme at this course.
Bumpy greens
I have always enjoyed the challenge and beauty of Tilden Park GC but it was difficult to enjoy this last rd. I had not played the course for several years and I do not recall ever seeing the greens in this conditions. They were consistent from green to green but quite rough and bumpy. Due to the slopes, one does not charge the hole at Tilden, but when rolled at the appropriate speed, everyone's ball would repeatedly bump off line no matter which direction they putted from, up, down or from the side. One really had to be lucky to sink anything. I cannot recommend the course while the greens are maintained in this condition. Also, many of the White tees are apparently under repair, so the forward tees were in play. There is also very little separation between the blue, white and red tees which is totally inappropriate for red tee players.
Course condition bad
I haven't played here lately but I always remembered Tilden being in great condition. Not this time. The entire course was a disappointment, from tees to greens. Adding insult to injury was the $93 cost. Granted it was on a weekend and fathers day but the round was worth half that at best.
Most Underrated Course in the Bay Area!
Amazing course and beautiful views! Tons of wildlife and very friendly staff. Weather was great and pace of play was not nearly as bad as I was initially told it was going to be. Definitely going back!
Use to be a good course. Now super slow with clueless hackers.
Super slow play, due to beginner golfers and lack of course staff.
On weekends, get ready for 1-2 round a year players and drinking 6 packs. I am totally ok with beginner golfers, but be ready golfers. Hit a bad shot, start walking to your ball to get ready. Dont hang in the cart drinking a beer and waiting for your buddy to shank his/her shot.
Treacherous conditions when wet
Steep fairways, muddy and very slippery wet. Beautiful views but don't play unless there have been consecutive days of sun.
Not for me
Something about this place did not sit right with me. The drive up the mountain offers stunning views of the Bay Area but you get none of those views once you arrive at the course. The tee boxes were poor, average greens, and SLOW pace of play. Not to mention it was expensive to play! I paid 130 bucks for a small bucket, 18 holes, and a 20$ rider fee for my lady to accompany me. I played in a group of friends and we all agreed we will never return. We only played 9 holes because we were so dissatisfied with our time being wasted by the pace of play and no Marshall trying to speed along the players. I will take my time and money somewhere else where it is respected.
