i picked a bad time to play
i only played the front 9 as the back 9 was getting punched and sanded. the front had been punched a few days before i playe d and there was a lot of sand covering all the holes so the puttinfg was terrible. the rest of the fairways and sand traps were in good condition. i think ill wait for a few weeks before attempting to play again
Greens are deplorable
Practically every golf course in the Bay area are aerating their greens right now and Tilden Park is no exception, except for the fact that the greens are in the worst shape I've seen. Bare patches and spots, sand, shaggy and bumpy untrue rolls are what you can expect right now. I'd wait at least a couple of weeks until they get get them somewhat in order - it may take a lot longer - they are in really tough shape. I like the tough layout through the trees and rolling hills - it's often hard to find a flat lie on some holes! Play in a month or two would be my suggestion at this point and time.
Couldn’t see anything
Foggy pretty much the entire round. Couldnt see 15 feet in front of us. Played 90% of the round hoping we wouldn’t get hit by a ball since it was so foggy and since it was first time playing no clue where greens were and they were punched.
Terrible greens
I played Tilden several times and rated a 4-Star. My low rating this time is largely due to lousy condition of the greens. Apparently they just punch them and filled holes with sand. They were damaged, rough, extremely irregular, and have large areas with no grass at all. They were not suitable for any level of play. Also the tee boxes were not mowed and I needed a 3” tee so the ball.can clear the grass. The course should have been closed.
WILL PLAY AGAIN
Fun course. Maybe will try to walk it one day. Pace of play was slow, usually normal for weekends. Slowest greens I have ever played.
Cafe closes too early
Bar and cafe understaffed and closed too early. Before 5 pm.
Speed of greens not consistent from hole to hole.
Many unfixed ball marks on greens.
Payments for green fees, carts between Golf Now and the Pro Shop were confusing.
Driving Range payments for buckets very confusing. It totally befuddles non-regulars who end up taking a long time and holding up long lines of golfers.
Conditions were a disappointment.
Greens are not in the best shape. Inconsiderate 3some in front of us. 1 person in the group would hold up play by talking on their phone. Reported this to the course marshal, but his response was cursory at best. 5 hour plus round on a Tuesday. Shouldn’t be happening. I hope they can make improvements soon, because I’ve always considered the layout here to be fun and challenging.
Etiquette
Overall, the course was one of the better ones I’ve played, since moving from Hawaii. However, it could be top tier if it weren’t for the lack of course etiquette exercised by the players. Namely the immense amount of broken tees or tees left in the ground, at all tee boxes. And the greens, were absolutely trashed. Divots everywhere, climbs of cut grass, leaves(which is expected) but the rest is preventable. Additionally, the pace of play was a bit slow. Normally if there’s a group of 4 and they have a single player behind them, constantly having to wait on them, etiquette says you let the single play through. Not here. I had to continuously wait 5, 10, even 20 minutes just to tee off. Not to mention my follow on shots. Aside from those things listed above. The course was great, challenging and the surrounding views/environment was beautiful.
Poor green
Punching the greens on the day we played was a surprise.
Will be back
I'd play here every day it it was closer. Very good greens, probably 8.5, nice fairways and fun layout
Greens need work
We were able to play the front nine in exactly 2 hours but for some reason, everyone got backed up at the 10th tee which led to a longer duration on the back nine. On the positive side, the course was greener than other courses I play, e.g. Lake Chabot, but the greens were very bumpy and in some cases had areas best described as ground under repair where you would have to move your ball to have a fair putt, e.g. browned out or scarred sections. I would still recommend the course just because of the challenging holes and overall flora and fauna,, e.g. beautiful trees, a number of scenic tee boxes, etc. Also saw a deer and a coyote during the round.
Great course, could use a marshal
Course was outstanding. Pace is slow. Lots of crossing over into parallel fairways. Foursome ahead of us playing multiple balls every hole. Could use someone to enforce pace of play.
Too tough to carry....
Course in nice shape, especially greens which are in prime condition. Last time I played here it was 98 degrees. I carried my bag and had to quit after 9. Due to exhaustion. This time w/ forecast of 68 degrees high, figured I'd give it another try. Despite the temp actually hitting 80+, I finished, but suffered the last nine and faded horribly. What walkers need to know: Despite it being beautiful scenically, it's an insanely hilly (every hole) course. No matter that I'm in great shape for my age (66), I recommend riding no matter your age. You will enjoy yourself more, and almost certainly play better. I will play Tilden (but NEVER WALK it) again.
