Fun and challenging course
I really enjoy playing this course. Course can be as hard or forgiving as you allow it. Multiple tee boxes allows you to pick your difficulty. Golf carts are great with on screen GPS for shot distance. I didn't give it an excellent rating for conditions due to the fact the course has not grown in well and many tee boxes were suffering and the greens were recently aerated. The costs should be a bit lower with current course conditions and the recent aeration which lead to the less than perfect overall rating. By June the course should be in excellent condition.
Layout great - course needs lots of work
First time playing (from out of town) with friends.
Very friendly staff and club house conditions.
Very hilly, challenging but fun layout (blind shots, lots of lost balls).
Too much money to pay for current course conditions (all bunkers under repair and got free drop, many greens and tee boxes bare/crappy, fairways decent but not great). Told bad spring impacted conditions, but seems like more work ahead to get back in shape.
Thank you for playing Avalon and we love to host out of town visitors. We greatly appreciate you feedback. Yes, we had a tough winter, cold and wet weather in March and April didn't provide the much needed conditions for our Bermuda to refresh for the spring. Major renovations started on May 8th and I think you will be surprised a the difference if you are in the area again. Thank you again for your feedback.
Making strides
Avalon is doing a lot better. Clubhouse improvements are outstanding. Best carts in East Tennessee. Bunkers are the next phase of reno and they need it. Looking forward to playing again later this year.
jcthevol, Thank you for the review. Wanted to let you be aware that we started the rebuild of bunkers on May 8th. The front nine should be finished by Memorial Day. Hope to see you back at Avalon soon.
Poor value
This used to be one of my favorite courses. However now it is in horrible condition and is way OVERPRICED for what you get. Absolutely no sand in the traps just mud and clay, ground under repair everywhere and a course in bed need of TLC. The price of $45.00 on a "special rate" is still way too much for this course. The layout is great and when it was in condition it was good but over the past two years the new owners have done nothing to maintain it. Absolute waste of money.
Baloney...you can’t blame a bad round on the new owner. You can’t change a course overnight and the new owner continues to make improvements. The greens are better than they’ve been in years, the bunkers are scheduled to redone this spring, and they just got state of the art golf carts. I’ve heard from members of the club that love the improvements. Give it another try in the spring.
Avalon After the Rain
Good course with challenging fairways. Had rained so we had cart path only but still enjoyed the play. Only one hole had a water challenge. Lengthy course with lots of sand traps.
Thank you for playing Avalon and your five star rating. I know its a bit late to respond, but I wanted to make sure that you were aware of our new Club Car carts, with The Shark Experience Multimedia GPS system. Coming soon is Swing King which will allow you play for a hole-in-one on every outing. Look forward to seeing you back at Avalon soon.
The course was in great shape, the sand traps and water hazards were well placed.
What stands out for me is the sand trap placement around the green on hole #2 and the water hazard on hole #9 and #17.
Very Nice
Course was wet due to recent rain causing the bunkers to be filled and cart path only. But very nice layout, played very fast and were not pushed from behind.
Great course but not much of a scenery.
Course is over all in great shape fairways and greens. However the bunkers are all washed out and full of rocks, which are completely unplayable.
Avalon in Late September
A challenging layout, fairways and greens in good shape. Bunkers are in poor condition and are mostly played as ground under repair. Rough is long and dense, most balls hit into it are lost.
A very nice layout...until 17-18
The breadth, expanse, and beauty of this course doesn't hit you until you start toward the first tee. After a brief stop at a nice practice range, it's a short ride up a hill to the first tee. From there you get your first view of rolling hills, green fairways, and the start of a solid test of golf. The course is an intelligent layout with difficulty on the edges to penalize bad shots. The fairways are not overly wide but definetely not too tight. However beware if you stray into the taller rough as your ball will sink deep and if you find it, will be almost unplayable. Bunkers are placed around the greens to catch off target shots. And a word on the bunkers. At the pro shop they are very open to tell you that they are working on restoring the bunkers and that most of them are played as ground under repair. When you see them, you will see why. Other than that, holes 1 to 16 are outstanding.
Then you hit 17. It is almost as if you are playing a different golf course The trees disappear. The rough is absent. The hard dogleg routing over water is contrived. 18 is a bit better but still not the same course you had just experienced. These last two holes are a disappointment based on the first 16. Despite this, it was a great experience and a fun round of golf well worth the trip.
I agree with this review. The course really changes character on 17 & 18.
Tough but great challenge
We played the course. It has a good layout and is in good shape. This was the nicest course in the area
Getting better
This is a very nice layout in a beautiful neighborhood. The new owners are putting a lot of investment into the course and clubhouse. The sand traps are being rebuilt and will be much improved. Avalon is otherwise in very good shape and offers excellent challenges. The deep rough is brutal, stay out of it at all cost. A fun, very nice, playable and fair golf experience. I recommend it.
Hate the rough
Whoever decided to grow the rough out to hay field length should be fired! We're not PGA level players, so one of us always seemed to find the rough. In the really tall stuff, you're lucky to find your ball, but even if you find it, you need exceptional skill and strength to get out of it. I would hate to be a new golfer on this course. It punishes you severely for a bad shot off the tee. We were not the only ones having trouble. The group in front of us seemed to be looking for a ball on every hole.
Beautiful views, just enough of a challenge
I played from the whites which I think played around 6300yds. I loved the elevation changes and the great views. A far cry from the South Carolina courses I'm used to. Course conditions were really nice with the exception of the bunkers. However even the ranger (who was a pleasure to talk with) told me that it's basically a local rule to take your ball out of the bunker since 90% of them almost all rock. They know it's an issue so just know that if you go in the bunker, play ground under repair and take a drop. There were a few holes where you wanted to thread the needle, but most holes were pretty fair and fun to play. Stay out of the rough though, the second cut was pretty nasty and if I didn't have someone who helped look for my ball, I probably would have lost a few just buy landing in the rough.
Overall though,I really enjoyed playing out here.
The Best In Town
I almost gave up on Avalon but new ownership has completely turned this course around; like a rising Phoenix!
I'm in sales and always looking for courses to entertain clients. This is now my go to course personally and professionally. They have it all; pool, bar, driving range, and I hear a fine dining steak and seafood restaurant will open soon.
I look forward to playing the course in the years to come with my son and family.
Thanks for all you do!
Awesome course!!!
I travel for a living and played it some time ago. I just played it again and it's so much improved I can't wait to come back. It's a beautiful course, perfect layout and the restaurant food is great. Would recommend for sure.
First of all, thank you for playing Avalon and your feedback. We strive to get better every day. Virtually every course in the area has suffered through and unusually cold and wet April. Thank you for the comments on the new Club Car carts. We were the 3rd course in the country to have the Shark Experience Multimedia GPS screens. Also, we began work on March 8th the total rebuild of our bunkers. Thank you again for playing Avalon and look forward to seeing you back soon.
