Needs to be better mantained
The course was very challenging if you are going by design, but was not in good shape. Would like to play it again, but for the price and the condition, I would definitely wait. Also, I am looking for a driving range to join, so we tested it out before playing. I would easily say it was in terrible shape. I will keep looking for now.
Condition is horrible
The starter stated that there was a fungus affecting the fairways....he failed to mention that there were no longer fairways, but instead mud and dirt. Not sure of the disease the grass has, but it has totally eaten up the fairways. Greens are OK, except for the fact no one likes to repair ball marks.
One foursome in front of ours ruined everything. Not sure what their problem was, but by the 3rd hole, they were more than a hole behind. Marshall's were called twice and to no avail. Oh well, not planning on going back this year, hopefully the fungus gets cured.
Course in Shambles
Its sad to see how bad the course has become. The greens and fairways are in awful shape. The signature hole (#9) is littered with about 40 Canadian geese and the green is covered in unrepaired divots.
The course has plenty of potential to be very nice but its not worth more than $20 a round in its current state.
Fairways are in poor shape. Not sure why.
Lots of bare spots on the fairways. Crab grass here and there. Greens in pretty good condition.
Dr. O'Hara
VA Oaks is a challenging course from the yellow tee box. The greens were in good shape and rolling nicely. Some of the fairways were under maintenance. The pace of play was slow initially on the back nine, but picked up after a few holes. Overall, we will be playing there again.
Seen better days...
VA Oaks is another great design by P.B. Dye in the DC-Metro area. Unfortunately, the course management doesn't seem to care about the condition of the course. The Front 9 is currently suffering from a grass disease or complete lack of attention. Numerous fairways are verging on unplayable with the rest just embarrassing. On the other hand, the Back 9 was in pretty good shape and almost seemed like it was maintained by different people. Across the course the large majority of bunkers were just dirt and rocks. I think they're also dealing with some sort of wasp nest(s) problem as a number of greens felt like a danger zone with enormous wasps buzzing around. Talk about added pressure on your putts.
The course has always been a great test with relatively narrow landing areas, interesting doglegs, and split fairways. It's just a shame about the condition of the fairways and bunkers.
Brown Fairways
Extremely burnt out. Not worth the price. Extremely slow pace of play.
this is a cool pb dye design in horrible shape
I played this course when it opened years ago. It is very tight and takes a few times around to know what to hit. You can basically leave the driver in the bag all day.
Unfortunately this weekend the course conditions were poor with no sand in most bunkers inconsistent grass and weeds throughout and hard burned out fairways British Open style.
.
But I still say play it a once or twice at a discount rate and hopefully someday they will improve the maintenance to match the unique scenic layout.
Decent, but too many blind shots
Course was in good shape, especially considering all the rain we have gotten. However the layout has too many blind shots. Be better if they had a course book or something similar to make it more friendly to newcomers.
Had a Great Time
We seemed to go on the hottest day of the summer so far, but even with the heat we all had a great time. The course was very well maintained and the staff was very friendly. The Marshal kept the pace of play going smoothly, but was friendly and polite about it. I would recommend this course; it is a challenging and beautiful course.
Fun time
Had a blast couple of really tough approach shots even with perfect tee shots.
Very nice course
The course was a little wet from all the rain we got over the last week, but it still was in great condition.
Great bang for the buck
The conditions aren't perfect but for the price $30 it is well worth it.
Slow play and no marshall.
Typical Pete Dye design. Difficult fairway and green but not long even playing on the back tee.
Fun course from the Back tees
course was in good shape and was challenging for intermediate golfers
A fun course to play
This is a fun course to play. It can be very challenging for a high Handicapper, like myself. Tight fairways and a few dog legs with sand and water hazards. If you are a high handicap, bring a few extra sleeves of balls. Otherwise, it is a very fun and challenging course, which I would highly recommend!
a few fun holes....
Sorry but I will not return. I realize it is early in the season but the course is in horrible shape....There was no one at the desk when we checked in and no one to get us a cart....pulled it out of the garage myself...fine but they seem a bit disorganized.....at least mow the rough so it is an even length......
thanks
Virginia Oaks is a beautiful course set in a residential neighborhood, fairways and greens are in very good shape, beautifully green, challenging!
I do recommend this course, the rough is very tough so hit 'em straight.
Great Layout
This course has an interesting, challenging layout. The fairways are in very nice condition. However, the greens are rather poor even for this early in the season and alledgedly kept very slow throughout the year. The traps are filled with rocky sand. Could be an outstanding course with some improved conditions.
I agree, roughs were very "patchy", many times the golf balls were lodged inbetween two patches of rough making it extremely hard to hit out of.
Poorly managed course along with the pace of play consistently being around 5 hours and some change.
