Roy Kizer Golf Course
About
This is a 36-hole city-owned operation that features one of Austin's best muni tracks, the Roy Kizer Golf Course, which complements the 1970s Jimmy Clay layout.
Austin's old water treatment facility was transformed by Randy Russell, who had more than 80 acres of lakes and marshland at his disposal when he laid out the 200-acre site. Russell's links-style design is flat, burdened by the wind, and loaded with bunkers. The toughest par is No. 11, which rolls 468 yards into the wind and is shamefully listed as a par 4. Take your bogey on No. 11.

This is Andy. He's in sales and is somehow always 'working' when we're playing golf. He can almost never be tagged on a Facebook golf course check-in during a weekday. He's 'working.' So here's proof that he was out with us playing golf yet again. :) Photo submitted by GordonATX on 09/08/2018

Great winter condition Photo submitted by jimpham on 01/07/2017
Good value course
Easy layout links type course , bunkers a bit wet but overall good value course to sharpen skills .
Fantastic Greens
The greens were superb; lush, weed free, well mowed and watered. Very smooth; putted great. This is a good time to catch this course.
I love playing Kizer when it's firm and fast, yet that wasn't the case yesterday. We've gotten a good amount of rain but the grounds crew out there has done a great job of keeping the course in good shape. Had a blast, only annoyance was the groups in front of us were a bit slow (seemed like a bachelor party or something) and the group behind us hit into us 2-3 times. Not bad enough to warrant calling a marshal, but annoying for sure. Greens rolling well right now.
Awesome layout
Tees for every level of player. Course conditions were great for the cold weather we were having. Staff was very friendly and the bar looked like a cool place to hang out. I will definitely be going back, maybe to the group classes I saw being promoted in the clubhouse.
Home course
If you live in S Austin this is the place to golf. Great people and nice facilities for any level of golfers. Both courses are awesome and well maintained. Driving range, putting greens, and a short course are available all day.
One of the nicest Muni's in Austin
This is probably my favourite Muni in the Austin metro area. Fairly wide and forgiving, the course is usually in reasonable condition. I have heard lately that there have been some issues with the greens. On this sunny day in September there were no such problems.
Fairways were nicely cut and the ball tended to sit up, greens true, if a little slow. The holes tend to be fairly wide off the tee, but there is plenty of water and bunkering that can make things difficult.
Hole highlights for me are the par 4 3rd with bunkers right in the driver landing zone. Depending on the tees you play and the wind, you can drive them but the safer approach of being short of the bunkers requires an unsighted approach to a green with bunkers and OB behind the green.
The par 4 11th is a difficult hole that requires a very decent drive over water and a fairway bunker for a mid-to low iron approach. It can play as a par five if the wind is not right.
I like the short par 16. Driveable but a deep bunker protects the front, and a ditch behind protects a thin green. Lay up and take a wedge approach instead.
The 17th is also a lovely dog-leg left par 5.
As mentioned in my Jimmy Clay review (in my opinion the poorer-cousin conditions wise), the 36 hole golf complex has a 4 hole par-3 course (with another practice putting green and bunker), a full grass driving range, two putting greens and even an area where you can hit your own balls (beside Jimmy Clay #9 hole). An excellent setup for a public course.
Always had a good time here.
Kizer in Great Shape
Excellent condition. Great pace of play. Fun to play a links style course in Austin.
Choose to play holes using different shots and angles
For being the end of a very dry summer 2018, we found the course to be in really good condition. Tee boxes, fairways, rough, and greens were all in surprisingly good shape.
It's been 5-1/2 years since I last reviewed this course. In reading my last review and thinking about playing this course yet again, it remains my opinion that it's easily one of the most open courses available to all skill levels. You have many wide fairways, normal rough, normal bunkers, and good sized greens. It's not one of those courses with towering trees ready to knock you down when you're not hitting perfectly off the tee. It's not going to give you any significant forced carries either. For all of these reasons, I find it to be a great course to relax and practice your shots a bit more. Instead of having to play course obstacles, you can use this course to work on target placement shots. You don't have to just hit it as far as possible nor over a particular obstacle. You can opt to play a hole from one side or another just to give yourself a different angle on the next shot. I like that I don't have to play a hole the same way every time. Know what I mean!?
I can't say much about the bunkers as I didn't find any today. My playing partners however found them challenging ... but that was 99.9% their playing ability (for today) and only 0.1% issues with the bunker conditions. The water, however, was still wet as always; found it a couple of times. The greens were slow today mainly because they'd aerated a week prior. And then we had rain the night before and day of play. So we had to adjust our putting power a bit. I only saw one green with any kind of issue (a small patch of fungi or something got to it). Otherwise, we were very pleased with their condition and how they rolled.
We played on a Tuesday afternoon. I found it odd that they had a beverage cart running around the course. I'd normally only expect that on (maybe) Friday thru Sunday. It's nice to have it. However, one tip for the course and/or cart driver ... make sure you have the basics in stock. When asked about cokes, we were told she only had DIET Coca-Cola and DIET Dr Pepper. Really!? Only diet on the cart!? How does that happen ... ever? The course or the cart gal simply failed in keeping proper inventory.
They also had a marshal driving around and he passed us at least twice during our round. Everything was pretty easy going this round so there weren't any issues. But I like seeing a marshal making regular rounds.
The walking pushcart 3-some that we caught up to for the last four (4) holes were slow. They each took quite a bit of extra time with every single shot. We might've had the marshal say something to them had he been around at that point. On a normal lazy Tuesday we wouldn't have minded too much. But on this day we had a dark thunderstorm rolling in on us. They could've picked up the pace just a bit so that we could all finish our respective rounds. Instead, we had to skip the final hole (I gave myself a bogey) while they s-l-o-w-l-y finished it out. They were senior players and someday (many years from now) I'll be one of those guys. But I guarantee I'll still play at a good pace and be aware of other groups around me.
August Beat Down
Seems the dog days of summer have beat down the course a little. I played 3 months ago and the course was in better shape. Good course considering the lack of rain lately.
In great summer shape
Even though many folks I speak with in Austin say Kizer is their favorite of the city courses, for me it's 4th on the pecking order behind Clay-Lions-Mo Willy.
That said, Kizer seems to be kept in some of the most consistent shape and Mo Willy has been struggling with its greens this year. So that said, it's probably #3 at least in 2018. During our hot August round, the greens were pretty much flawless.
I just think the other three city layouts have a little more character to them. Kizer is wide open and can get breezy, so a lot of folks refer to it as "links" but there are a lot of wetlands to navigate. All in all there are just fewer holes I get excited about playing at Kizer vs. the other Austin munis.
Fivesomes!!!
Played on a very hot Thursday afternoon. Course was in terrific shape...especially considering how hot and dry this summer has been. But pace of play was glacial....especially for a Thursday afternoon. Saw at least 2 fivesomes ahead of my group. Waited on EVERY shot. In addition to throwing off my playing rhythm, it was no fun just to be waiting in the sun and 100 degree temps. Stop booking fivesomes!!!!!
Unique Austin Course
A unique golf experience for Austin. Wide-open links style with only one two holes with any trees to contend with. The main challenge is wind, water, bunkers and moguls. Played on a cooler afternoon this summer and it was just perfect. Fairways are lush for the most part. Green are good. The only problem was that weeding was needed on the collars of a few of the greens. Kizer is also a nature preserve so its natural beauty, especially near sundown, is up there with the best in the area.
Awesome fairways
Great, open course with some challenging greens on the back 9. Fairways are in superb shape. Had a great time for $30 round!
I like Roy Kizer
I found a hot deal for $14--an awesome value for this course. The greens have been aerated and sanded, so it may be some time before they are in better shape. That said, I was all alone and it was a great time.
I like the rhythm of the course. The marshall, Carlos, was making me laugh when he came by. It was ~97 out and he told me he was trying to get the A/C turned on... I loved that haha
Not my first or last time at Roy Kizer or Jimmy Clay.
