Roy Kizer Golf Course
About
This is a 36-hole city-owned operation that features one of Austin's best muni tracks, the Roy Kizer Golf Course, which complements the 1970s Jimmy Clay layout.
Austin's old water treatment facility was transformed by Randy Russell, who had more than 80 acres of lakes and marshland at his disposal when he laid out the 200-acre site. Russell's links-style design is flat, burdened by the wind, and loaded with bunkers. The toughest par is No. 11, which rolls 468 yards into the wind and is shamefully listed as a par 4. Take your bogey on No. 11.

This is Andy. He's in sales and is somehow always 'working' when we're playing golf. He can almost never be tagged on a Facebook golf course check-in during a weekday. He's 'working.' So here's proof that he was out with us playing golf yet again. :) Photo submitted by GordonATX on 09/08/2018

Great winter condition Photo submitted by jimpham on 01/07/2017
Getting better
After a tough bout with greens dying off in the wet weather earlier in the year, they are now in pretty good shape. Only a few bad spots on the greens, but very playable now. Fun challenging course.
Greens not in very good shape
Overall the course was in great shape except for several greens that had brown patches. Basically, those greens are two putt max.....no reason to try and play around the spots. Staff was great and pace of play was not an issue. Marshall on the course and kept play moving along nicely.
Green Issues
The course was in great shape except for about half a dozen greens, which looked like they had suffered from poor drainage. Those were very rough.
Great course
Played in the middle of the day and it was perfect. The layout on Roy is really fun. Not too difficult but has some challenging holes. The only problem was that the greens are pretty spotty. Most greens had dead spots that made putting impossible. If u can handle bad greens and want to play a fun course then try it out.
Great course layout
I try and play this course at least once a month. Because it is so wide open it is very hard to lose a ball out there. That being said, the fairways are in great condition and the greens are getting better. There was a problem earlier in the season when the greens where so bad that you couldn't even putt. Like all things in nature over time the problem corrects itself. The greens are not 100% back but it will get there eventually. As of writing this review the 16th hole still has a make shift green well short of the original green. Making this hole an eagle hole for sure. Don't be afraid to play this course just because of some patchy spots on the greens.
Course not in great shape
I was a single behind a 3-some who thought they were playing for the club championship. Every putt they took forever even though their shots were all over the fairway. Finally asked them if I could skip around them and the pace picked up fine. There was no marshal to make them pick up the pace.
It's been hot and almost every green was in bad shape. Lot's of dead and bare patches on the greens.
I've always liked the layout and the staff was nice. So not much they could do about the conditions.
Greens getting better
I had played the course in mid-June and the greens were an absolute disaster. Huge progress since then. Only one green (#13) is still unplayable. Every other green now has good turf over at least 85% of the putting surface. Bumpy and slow, but at least they are acceptable now. Hopefully the improvement continues.
Greens not looking good
Been here before and loved it, the layout is great, pace of play is good. The greens used to be a lot better, but they are looking really bad right now. Fairways are great! If you wanna play and don't care about putting really then i would recommend the course, but if you want to focus on putting and getting a better score I wouldn't recommend it. Hopefully they get better soon!
Great Course; Horrible Greens
I really like Roy Kizer, so I was very disappointed when I last played it. At least 1/3 of the greens were in horrible shape.
Some were almost all dirt. On more than a few chips and putts, the ball jumped sideways because of the "dog track" greens.
And the 16th green was in such bad shape that they cut a new "green" our of the fairway 75 yards short of the "real" green. The 16th is Kizer's iconic hole and now it is ruined.
The greens are so bad that the fairways were in better shape than many of the greens.
I don't know why people work at a golf course if they can't maintain the greens.
Won't play it again until I read that all of the greens have been redone.
STAY AWAY.
Greens Need Major Help
I've played here about 10 times now. I like the layout, I like the challenge and I like the deal I got until I started putting. There was about three holes that had a decent putting green, the others were riddled with major issues. For the price that we got this deal, I would say we should have been given a discount due to the poor greens or a complimentary bucket of balls. I think if you are going to be playing here, you should get a complimentary small bucket of balls, if you are there for practice, you should pay for that. Fairways were in good shape considering we haven't had any rain for over a month now. Also, no one told us about the temporary green on the back nine, I want to say it was on hole 14 or 15.
Greens under repair!!
Course is in great condition save for the greens. Seemed like almost all were under some kind of repair.
Greens are toast
Poor green conditions and no short term solution
Greens in bad shape. Rest of the course is great.
The greens weren't looking their best. Some looked perfect, others had large dead spots. Every other part of the course was in great shape though.
?
greems were very BAD. not going back.
Worst green ever
Golf courses punch their green to put sand all the time but Roy Kaiser green, worst I've ever seen, period!!!! When green is bad, golf is not fun!
A fun track.
First time very impressed. The course was in great condition except greens. They had been punched and sanded. Putting poor but understand the need to do this. Once greens are back I really am going to like playing there.
Slow bad greens
This is a very good links lay out which has well kept fairways and tee boxes. The overall difficulty of the course is an easy one for the poor to average golfer. The only negative is that they have very spotty greens due to a fungus problem on many of them. It does not effect the rolling of the greens for the most part though. The greens however are the slowest I have played on in about a year.
Putting Greens Burned-out/Terrible....Rest of the Course Very Good
Kizer is a mixed bag right now. The putting greens are HORRIBLE, completely burned out on 10-12 of the 18 holes. Guess the record rain submerged most of the greens as this course is built on an old flood plane. Un-puttable sadly. However, the rest of the course is in VERY good shape. Again, I guess the record rain really helped the fairways and tee-boxes. I love playing Kizer, it's unlike any other course in the area. I especially like to play it in the fall when there's a nip in the air and cool breeze in your face, gives you that true links style golf feel. My suggestion is you wait till fall to play Kizer to let the putting greens come back. The Texas heat isn't going to help make it any better in July and August. It's a shame really because the rest of the course is in great shape.
Great fairways
It was nice to play some lush fairways but the greens were pretty sad. Blame it on the flooding we've had.
Poor greens
The greens are in terrible shape. Some of them are totally brown and dead looking. The rest of the course seemed to be fine. This course has always had the best greens but not right now. Don't know why they are in such bad condition but I would not play it again till they are fixed.
