Roy Kizer Golf Course
About
This is a 36-hole city-owned operation that features one of Austin's best muni tracks, the Roy Kizer Golf Course, which complements the 1970s Jimmy Clay layout.
Austin's old water treatment facility was transformed by Randy Russell, who had more than 80 acres of lakes and marshland at his disposal when he laid out the 200-acre site. Russell's links-style design is flat, burdened by the wind, and loaded with bunkers. The toughest par is No. 11, which rolls 468 yards into the wind and is shamefully listed as a par 4. Take your bogey on No. 11.

This is Andy. He's in sales and is somehow always 'working' when we're playing golf. He can almost never be tagged on a Facebook golf course check-in during a weekday. He's 'working.' So here's proof that he was out with us playing golf yet again. :) Photo submitted by GordonATX on 09/08/2018

Great winter condition Photo submitted by jimpham on 01/07/2017
stay away for now
Played Kizer on Saturday 3/28/15. Kizer is one of my favorite course in the area. Unfortunately, the course is in bad condition...in particular the greens. They are brown and crusty...very little grass on them. Apparently they are aerating and sanding them next week. Hopefully they recover after that. But there is really no excuse for them to be in this kind of shape right now. Other courses' greens are fine in the area. I will not be back until i hear a good report. Final word: it really irks me that golf courses charge full price when their course is obviously in poor condition.
Texas links
If you hit the drive straight and your irons true then this course is a lot of fun. If you don't do those two things then bring a lot of balls...
A place to play
Nothing special. Pasture grass in the fairways. Greens in sad shape. This place has really went down hill in the past year.
fun day at Kizer
Very good place of place. Course in good shape for winter play.
Winter Time Conditions?
Always enjoy playing this course. Usually play during the week when it is less crowded. Fairways in decent shape but greens not up to their usual standard. With Jimmy Clay closing for six months for repairs this course will get a lot of pressure and I hope staff can keep the course maintained to a reasonable playing level. Good value thru GolfNow but doubt I would pay standard green fees given the shape it is in now.
Good layout, great deal, average experience
The place was fully packed for a 1:40 tee time on a Monday. We were stuck behind a group of hackers in jeans and had to wait for them on about 12 holes which made getting into a rhythm difficult. Decent wide open layout-conditions never change here typically dead and burnt out. People in the pro shop are kind of flaky and the locals think they run the show. But for 16 a pop it was well worth any hassle.
Nice Course
Greens were in good condition. Pace of play could have been a bit faster. Good value for a muny course.
Nice Layout; Poor Condition
The course has an interesting layout. Over all, it is quite flat and open--few trees or elevation changes. However, there are lots of rolling hills of thick Bermuda lining the fairways. Generous number of water hazards and sand traps.
The disappointment was in the course maintenance. At least 90% of the traps were unkept and unplayable--eroded, hard. Some of the greens were damaged, not recently mowed, and lots of unrepaired ball marks. In fairness, this was my first time to play this course, so I do not know if these condition issues are the norm.
I play 30-40 courses per year, and by comparison, I felt the course was over-priced for the conditions. If you can keep your ball in the fairway, the course plays pretty easy, but if you miss a lot of fairways and greens, you can post a large number. I played on a cool, windy day and shot 77 (avg. score).
Fun time!
Course was in good condition, the greens were nice and they have great practice facilities. I would definitely play it again even though it's a little expensive and the pace of play is not as fast as it should be!
Great Muni Course
Course was in average shape but this is a well maintained course. It is the pride of Austins city courses. A great Value for the money. Greens put true.
Best in Texas
This was the best course I've played so far in Texas. It's a great links course with several risk reward holes. They had recently over seeded so the greens were slow but true. The staff checking us in were friendly and helpful. He recommended we return to play Jimmy Clay as well. I wish we had played there today instead of Quail Creek Country Club. That was a true dog track.
Can't wait to return. It is now my Austin go to course when I'm in town.
Great value
Wide open but challenging greens, great bang for the buck
This course was interesting, links style course
Well kept course, however the greens had just been sanded. Lots of interesting holes, lots of sand and water but the fairways are wide open.
This is a good course to play.gpod practice facility
Good course to play would suggest to friend to come and play
Great Course
Love this golf course. Always enjoy playing Roy Kizer. Rough was tougher than normal, was lush and a good 4 inches. Greens ran true and probably around 9-9.5. Great overall course for the money.
The course was nice.
I enjoyed the speed of play. I play here almost every time I come in to Austin. I enjoy this course.
Nice Course overall
The course was in good shape overall, especially for this time of year in South Texas. Pace of play was a little slow and the course was a bit crowded. Lots of folks starting prior to 10am. Overall it's a decent place to play especially for less than $40 with a cart.
Roy Kizer 8/17
There was barely anyone on the course at 1:00 on a Sunday - I assume the Texas-heat had something to do with that. A friend and I were able to play 18 in 3-hours flat: no one in front of us, no one behind us. Course is in great shape - a good time overall.
This course is in great shape for August
Kizer is in good shape for mid-August in Central Texas
Aren't all courses fun with you hit your driver straight and irons true?
