Roy Kizer Golf Course
About
This is a 36-hole city-owned operation that features one of Austin's best muni tracks, the Roy Kizer Golf Course, which complements the 1970s Jimmy Clay layout.
Austin's old water treatment facility was transformed by Randy Russell, who had more than 80 acres of lakes and marshland at his disposal when he laid out the 200-acre site. Russell's links-style design is flat, burdened by the wind, and loaded with bunkers. The toughest par is No. 11, which rolls 468 yards into the wind and is shamefully listed as a par 4. Take your bogey on No. 11.

This is Andy. He's in sales and is somehow always 'working' when we're playing golf. He can almost never be tagged on a Facebook golf course check-in during a weekday. He's 'working.' So here's proof that he was out with us playing golf yet again. :) Photo submitted by GordonATX on 09/08/2018

Great winter condition Photo submitted by jimpham on 01/07/2017
Kizer in August
Course was in great shape considering Austin hasn't received any rain in over 7 weeks. Staff was friendly, prices were decent and the pace of play was excellent. The rough is a little dried out, so errant shots had a tendency to disappear into the brush surrounding the course. I would definitely recommend anyone to play this course if they have the chance.
Slow pace of play.
The course is in good shape. The issue for me has been and continues to be the slow pace of play. It took 5 1/2 almost 6 hours to play 18 holes. The slow pace of play coupled with the heat made it a brutal round of golf.
Play this course,. Just try to get an early tee time during the summer months.
Improved conditions
Great course overall. The course is free of trees for the most part but there are plenty of water hazards. Greens were in great condition for a muni course but just a bit slow. Driving range was closed so no warm up bucket. I would come again!
Fun course
This was my first time out to the course. I'd certainly go again!
Bad greens
Greens are being re done so it's not worth playing right now
Overall good public course
This is my second time to play here and I am impressed by the condition of this public course. Maintained well, this course provided a great golfing experience. The hills make the golf course a beautiful sight. The course was in good shape overall. The pace of play was a little slow only because of walkers. Driving range is under construction still
Course is in premiere shape!!!
Teed off at 3pm on Friday, pace of play was a bit slower than what I'm used to at Kizer. Wasn't too stacked opened up on the back 9, expected for a summer Friday afternoon. Course is in Great shape all that rain from past couple of months has done wonders for the course. Fairways are plush greens are rolling good, the green on number 11 had a few dry spots with sand but that was the only one. Course is a great value right now for a municipal.
What a turnaround
I visited Kizer about 2 months ago and the greens were in such bad shape we didn't even play the course. Today, #12 green is the only one that has yet to completely recover, and the few small problem areas there weren't really in play. Yesterday afternoon the greens were rolling true and stimping at about a 9. Fairways, green surrounds and tee boxes were in good shape. Good sand in the bunkers. The driving range is being redone as part of the Jimmy Clay re-do, so no warm-up balls. Really impressed with the greenskeeper's work.
Fine course, slow play
Course was a bit wet after all the rain we had gotten here in Austin, but still played reasonably well. More Marshalls were needed to help the flow of play. Terribly slow foursome ahead of me, along with a single player who was playing 2 balls. Otherwise, I enjoyed my round. I like playing at Roy Kizer.
Where were the Marshals?
I like the course, it is one of my favorite places to play. However, this outing could have been much better if the course had a Marshal that checked on the players. This outing we were behind a foursome that played loud music, threw balls at each other, ran across the green, damaged the greens and played bumper cars with the carts. Never saw a marshal once.
In The Rough
The greens are still rough, still need a lot of work. Hopefully the recent rains help the grass on the greens and the ball can roll instead on jumping up and down towards the hole. The driving range is under re-construction an closed, so your warmup is the first hole.
Kizer dog track
This is the worst shape this course has ever been in with hard crusty greens. If you want your wedge approach shot to stop make sure you under club or expect the ball to run 5 - 10 yards after impact. I don't think it was worth the $33 discount price, much less the regular $49 they normally charge.
aerated
Greens aerated a few weeks ago and way too many hot spots for good putting. Pace of play was ok...if not for the group of 5 in front. Been playing here for many years and greens were in worst shape ive seen. I attribute this too the diverted traffic while clay is under construction. Still enjoy this course though.
Good course
Play this course quite a bit due to it being down the street from my house. Course is in pretty good shape but could be better. Everyone there at the course is super friendly and pace of play is great. Definitely going to continue to play here!
Love Kizer, but do they have a greenskeeper?
Roy Kizer is a fun course to play. The open links style layout is a welcome change from most Austin area courses.
The fairways were in good shape, but the greens (or more accurately browns) were in laughable shape. almost every green looked like it needs to be completely replaced. It wasn't until hole 16 was there a green that would be considered acceptable.
It's a shame the greenskeeper has allowed the greens to go this badly.
Not good
I've played this course before and for $30 it was worth it... This time, I paid $25 and it was not worth it at all. The greens were in terrible condition. It was like putting on a fairway with patches of concrete, which made putting completely pointless. I would not play this course again this year with those green conditions.
Greens in sad shape
I usually play Kizer once a week with my buddies. Due to weather and work, it has been about 9 weeks since we played. The greens have always been some of the best for a public course in Austin, but whatever has happened lately, is sad. The greens were absolutely terrible. I hope they can fix the problem soon for spring and summer play.
Terrible greens
Greens are horrible right now. They are all burned out. Can't believe they're charging full price for this course right now. Save your money and go to the driving range because that's all you're getting playing this course.
Fairways were in the best shape I've ever seen here.
Poor Greens
The day I played it was fairly windy but my main problem was the condition of the greens. Most were is very rough shape. Where there was grass it was dead and had weeds on most greens. They need to aerate and over seed the greens and let people know that before they make a tee time.
What happened to your greens?
This is always one of the best courses in austin. But something had happened to the greens. Some of them are bare dirt with weeds growing while a few were decent. Other than that it was great, but with bad greens you undoubtedly have a bad golf course unfortunately.
Give them 2-3 more weeks to figure this out before going back
