Roy Kizer Golf Course
About
This is a 36-hole city-owned operation that features one of Austin's best muni tracks, the Roy Kizer Golf Course, which complements the 1970s Jimmy Clay layout.
Austin's old water treatment facility was transformed by Randy Russell, who had more than 80 acres of lakes and marshland at his disposal when he laid out the 200-acre site. Russell's links-style design is flat, burdened by the wind, and loaded with bunkers. The toughest par is No. 11, which rolls 468 yards into the wind and is shamefully listed as a par 4. Take your bogey on No. 11.

This is Andy. He's in sales and is somehow always 'working' when we're playing golf. He can almost never be tagged on a Facebook golf course check-in during a weekday. He's 'working.' So here's proof that he was out with us playing golf yet again. :) Photo submitted by GordonATX on 09/08/2018

Great winter condition Photo submitted by jimpham on 01/07/2017
What was up with the greens?
Course was nice as always, except for about half the greens.
Despite all the rain, the greens were in poor condition for this course....they looked yellow and burnt/dry in lots of spots...especially on our front 9 (we went off 10). They rolled fine for the most part, but there was definitely something wrong.
I've played the course many times and have never seen the greens like that.
Despite that, I'd play there tomorrow - it's always a nice course.
Great shape!
With all the rains we've had, course looks great. Fairwaysee are lush and green and greens are fast!
Nice value and good condition
Roy Kizer is more of links style course and is well maintained and provides good value. Enjoyed it and will be back.
Wide open fairways
Interesting course with wide open fairways on the front 9 and little bit tighter on second 9. Greens were in fairly good shape compared to other courses I played recently. Definitely will play again soon.
Great Muni. Course
I wasn't expecting much for $29.00 per player. I was pleasantly incorrect! The greens were in very good shape, fairways were in very good shape. The course was a nice layout and would be a good challenge for all the mid handicappers out there. I would play it again. It was a fun outing.
1st time playing course
Course was in great shape, the rain from the past three days slowed down the role of fair ways but that is not a bad thing with the way some of the holes are shaped. Greens were in good shape and soft which helped top get the ball to stop where you needed it to . Greens were slow rolling due to being soft and long, but still a very enjoyable round and will go back again in the future.
Not very friendly
We had booked a tee time on golf now. When we arrived they said they did not have a tee time for us. They did get us on the other course but they acted like we really inconvenienced them. The greens were rough.
Good City Course
Solid Layout. Pretty good condition for early in the year. Some really excellent holes. Has a ranger but needs to push people.
Windy Day
Kizer is always a fun course to me. If your in Austin, play here and you will have fun. It's wide open, but can play long from the tips.
80 Degrees in January
It was 80 out last Sunday, so everyone was at the course. Nothing new to a muni in Austin. I expected to have a 4.5 hour round and I got what I paid for. Started at 2:09 and was the last group to finish at 6:30.
Overall the course was not bad for winter golf. As usual everything but the greens and tee boxes were brown. Fairway was hard to I got a lot of role from the ball. Greens were hard and short, but they did have grass and were green. The ball ran fairly smooth and true except for a few times. I enjoyed the course and would go back for the price I paid. I went through golf now and paid $29. The course wanted $45. If that were the case, it would not have been a "good" value for money.
Very Slow Pace of Play
I enjoy playing both courses here, especially Roy Kizer. The staff needs to do something about the pace of play. I was on track to play a 6 hour round of golf due to a single ahead of me who was playing upwards of three balls at a time. That is ridiculous if you asked me. I didn't see a marshall at all during the round to enforce the rules of play. I recommend this course, but not if I continue to see these 6 hour rounds.
Links style
I have always liked the it's links style. I also Love that it's a walkable course when there aren't a lot of them left. It's not easy end of June to sept but you can if you want. On this day it was 40 and the wind was howling 20-25 mph gusts. Played like the British open! But there were only a few hardy folks out so we made a 3 hour round. Would have been shorter if we really tried but it was a great pace for a Friday afternoon in January. And the coarse is in great shape.
Slow play, but great course
It was very busy and I enjoyed playing the course, but 18 holes took 4 1/2 hours, no one has that kind of time.
Boring
Just not the kind of course I like. Perhaps other golfer would like the layout but I prefer more trees and tighter farways
great day at Roy Kizer
Expected rain all day and it held off. Cloudy and cool with a light north breeze made it a great day at Roy Kizer. #11, named teeth to the wind , played gently downwind. Fairways drained well after historic rainfall one week prior. Greens were very slow!! Still a ton of fun. Play was bunched a bit at #4 (long par 3) but evened out after.
Course is in good shape
Kizer was overseeded 3 weeks ago. I played too soon afterwards and the greens, tee boxes were really long, but in fairness, it was too early to mow as the winter grass as not well established. Last week, much improved, fairways nice and lush, greens mowed, soft, yet moderately fast. Heavy rains, 14+ inches, the following weekend so remains to see the impact. Jimmy Clay closed now due to the weekend rains, lot of debris, ground saturated.
Kizer / Clay
Been a favorite of the willingness of the staff to accommodate and make guests feel appreciated. Awesome group of folks.
Fun Course
Kizer is an easy course and helps the ego. The greens are a little furry and slow but after a rough summer they should be fine soon. Driving range was down for repair but Kizer is always a fun time.
a step up from your usual muni
hadn't been out to kizer in almost 10 years, so decided to give it a shot. it's about the closest you'll get to links golf in austin, but while there are not many trees, there is a lot of water.
without the trees the course is playable for any skill level. some of the holes are quite bland, with almost no distinguishing features. however, there are many holes with nicely placed hazards, water, or elevation changes that give some pretty memorable approach shots.
on this particular day i played as a single and finished in just about 2 hours. not sure if it's just always quiet in the late afternoon (3pm tee time), or if everyone was at home watching the PGA Championship, but i'm always excited to have a course to myself.
this probably isn't going to be your favorite course, but it's worth a visit. especially with the limited public options available in town.
