Roy Kizer Golf Course
About
This is a 36-hole city-owned operation that features one of Austin's best muni tracks, the Roy Kizer Golf Course, which complements the 1970s Jimmy Clay layout.
Austin's old water treatment facility was transformed by Randy Russell, who had more than 80 acres of lakes and marshland at his disposal when he laid out the 200-acre site. Russell's links-style design is flat, burdened by the wind, and loaded with bunkers. The toughest par is No. 11, which rolls 468 yards into the wind and is shamefully listed as a par 4. Take your bogey on No. 11.

This is Andy. He's in sales and is somehow always 'working' when we're playing golf. He can almost never be tagged on a Facebook golf course check-in during a weekday. He's 'working.' So here's proof that he was out with us playing golf yet again. :) Photo submitted by GordonATX on 09/08/2018

Great winter condition Photo submitted by jimpham on 01/07/2017
Nice environment, easily walked.
Enjoyed the day out on links, good weather, great company and pace of play. We all need rain...
Long greens, Slow play
Kizer is a great course in general. Cool layout, tough pin placement and water comes into play on a number of holes. However, the greens are always way way too long and when I played on 4/12, it was no exception. They should be cut to about half the length they are currently at. You can't get the read you are supposed to be able to get on them they are so long. That and the pace of play was extremely slow. I guess for a muni course, it's not bad, I mean, you get what you pay for. If they would have more marshals out there, cut the greens length, and have the second cut be an actual cut outside of the fairway, it would be an unbelievable course. Not sure I will play there again, just have seen the greens too long on many occasions.
Fun course
This course would be so much better with some greens. It needs attention. The coot p**p all over the greens is very ugly also. The people are very friendly and helpful, but it could be such a much better experience with a little more attention and I am sure money.
Greens & pace of play awful!
Golfnow usually puts a warning up if a particular course has recently been reseeded or airated. Both were done to this course. In addition, hundreds of ducks and duck stuff were on the greens. and a marshal came by and said there was nothing he could do to speed up play. a twosome was holding up at least 6 groups! this is usually my favorite public golf course in Austin but.....
This course is good for players who need forgiveness off the tee.
The staff is always friendly. The course is fun to play for higher handicap players.
The pace is a bit slow.
Very good value for the money.
A littleTLC would go miles here!
I generally have had good experiences here. The last couple of trips out though, I haven't been as nearly impressed. I thought the Kizer course was overall in pretty decent shape. However there always seemed to be some sandy patch on greens. Also the staff didn't seem willing to provide a whole lot of info when checking in. I wasn't told where to tee off from (apparently they don't like to have anyone actually start their round on no. 1) and they weren't announcing groups about to start or anything. Made for a very awkward grouping when I had to seek out my playing partners and then wait for a group making their turn to find out we needed to go off on 10 instead of 1.
Greens are the major drawback
Before starting the round while practicing putting, I was hoping the greens on the course would be better that the one I was standing on, but they weren't much of an improvement. Firm to hard greens, and thin grass on top of that, shots were not holding at all even into the wind. Putting was consistently inconsistent, with bumps and patchy areas. Fairways were thin and gravelly around the edges. Not a good experience. Pace of play very slow too.
This course is in great shape as always!!!
Great course. Greens are in excellent condition. Great pace of play with a full course. Can't go wrong playing here. Probably one of the best courses you can play for the money.
Great links-style course
I always enjoy this course. Greens are in great shape for this time of year.
Reasonable public course
This is a reasonably public course. Fairways are good, greeans a little rough
played in late January
Being from Upstate NY I found Roy Kizer ( January 2013)
Excellent in variety of holes, excellent priced, friendly locals.
Greens were extremely fast compared to northern courses.
Pace of play was a bit slow, but nobody cared. Practice range was below average..no distance markers. Snack bar needs major attention. Fairway grass was dormat but very playable.
Wildlife along the course and views were an added bonus.
Enjoyed this course and will play it over and over.
Great Little Muni
Nice little Muni in the Austin area, wide open, big greens, well maintained w/ some fun water hazards.
Course it's in great shape.
I enjoyed playing this course. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a challenging fun course.
Best Muni in Austin
Well maintained links style course. Lots of water, but forgiving. Enjoyed the round.
Probably is a 6.5 or 7 out of 10
The course is very much a links style course, but has much more water than I expected. The fairways are in the shape you would expect a links style course to be in, but the greens could use a little work. The only real problem I had was that the scorecard didn't show a couple of hazards next to the greens which caused me to lose a couple of shots, but other than that it was a fun day of golf. Can't really do much better price to quality of the course in the city of Austin
Nice muni. Not a link course but "link style" course
Roy Kizer is not a true link course, since it is not adjacent to a large body of water, but it is a "link style" course where you see very little trees and lots of undulation in the fairway. Course is well maintained. Nice and wide cart path is really nice. That is a telltale sign that it is well-kept. At least when I played, the green was really SLOW. Since it was my first time, I am not sure if it always this slow or if it is due to overseeding. Regardless, I liked the course, and definitely will come back to it.
This course is great value
Had been wanting to play Kizer for years and finally managed to get out there. Was very windy when we played making the course much more challenging, but enjoyable as I was excited to play a more links style course. Course was in pretty good condition. Greens I would say were a bit slow, but overall looking forward to getting back out there.
A course you can't stop coming back to!
This course offers challenges by way of water, tree-lined fairways and well-placed bunkers. I enjoy the changes throughout the round. From the wide open fairway, unless you meet the split bunkers, on #1; to #2 with water along the right side and the trees on the left. You see something different throughout each hole to make you really focus on the shot you want to hit. The course also has a couple spots that make you want to go for a little too much and risk the trees or ponds becoming the new home of your precious golf ball!
Nice course, great location, lots of wildlife.
Links style course with generally ample landing areas for drives, though some holes had fairly tight lies and approach targets. We found the course in great shape for December, lots of waterfowl on the numerous bodies of water. Well worth the green fee!
