Royal Ontario Golf Club
About
Royal Ontario Golf Club sprawls across gentle hillsides blanketed in mature trees and thick fescue. Formerly a stable, the course features large meadows and dense groves of trees that frame the fairways and greens. The layout has a more traditional, links design that features occasional water hazards, most notably on the par-5 ninth and 18th holes that share a large lake, but the tree-covered hills are the true challenge of the golf course. Although there are many difficult elements on this course, five sets of tees make it accessible for players of all skill levels. Royal Ontario Golf Club is often compared to the Masters Course at Lionhead Golf & Country Club.

Great staff but greens were not in good shape
The weather was a bit brisk but the course overall was in good shape except for the greens. They had been airrated but there were a lot of pitch marks. We just had to hope as the ball bounced on our putts. The course is quite challenging as water is in play on many holes. Glad we played it; we will come back.
Customer Service
Played this course on the 15th of October. Tee's and fairways were in fantastic condition. Ran into an issue with a number of the greens. They had been sanded and not raked making them unplayable. There was no mention of this prior to the round. Raised it with the Pro Shop after and were surprised, pleasantly, with a rain cheque for our twosome. Winter conditions are expected it was the lack of a heads up. The customer service was exceptional. Unfortunately not the norm in todays day and age. We'd be back just based on that. Curse is a lot of fun as well.
we love the course
We always look forward to playing the course, it is a challenge and needs managed but is fair.
Cdn Thanksgiving Round
First time at Royal Ontario. Greens were chewed up, and inconsistent, tees were OK, and rough was full of weeds. While I enjoyed the round, I would not pay any more than $50 to play here. Too many other courses in better condition than this one.
Excellent Fairways & greens
The course is always in excellent condition. A challenge for all levels of golfers, even newcomers to the game with the addition of the green tee boxes. Dining in the outdoor patio provides good food & entertainment as golfers approach the clubhouse around the pond on hole#9 .
Staff Amazing
Always great people there - the course was in excellent condition, a couple quirky holes I did not enjoy. Otherwise a fantastic golf experience.
Just another rounds
I would only recommend if you're 90 or better otherwise you won't have much fun here
A bit expensive
The 'Royal' in the name makes this course sound posh. Indeed when you arrive your name is on your cart and there are many bag attendants to help. This upper-crust mentality is also reflected in its pretty hefty green fee.
1. On Arrival
The staff were functional but by know means friendly. At check in there were no smiles to be seen or welcomes to be given.
2. Range
You expect that at a high end course range balls would be included. This is not the case. The range itself is fine if not a little short, but there is a nice little short game area.
3. The Course
I played off of the Blues with another couple of guys. The length was shorter than the yardage suggested, but the course allows you to shape your shots and encourages proper club selection. The sand in the traps was very good, and the water hazards are in play on a majority of the holes.
On the down side, ball marks were not fixed and Sand traps not raked. Not the courses fault, but the golfing public needs to have a little more respect.
4. Pace of Play
This is a course where inexperienced player can get themselves into a lot of trouble. My two playing partners found a lot of rough and water, but we were still waiting on every tee.
5. Bonus
I must have found some thirty balls during the round, which is a reflection of the courses difficulty.
I will probably go back again, but will only do so if the price is better.
Enjoy!!
GreAT fALL dAY!!
The course was in great shape, the weather was excellent. Our golf cart started to sputter on the 14th hole and we made it too 18, but was slow. Actually had to push it up some hills. Play was a little slow. Just under 5 hrs to complete round.
Like this course
This is a very nice golf course. Exceptionally well run and a challenge as a golfer.. but a nice one. I would go back here again for sure. Only complaint is that the staff wanted us to do cart path only when the dew was on the ground, is that necessary?
Management no where in sight.
Staff was driving their mainteancen trucks right in front of us as we were playing, very distracting. The blower even blasted grass at our cart.
No cart girl in sight, no management.
This play has gone down hill over the years.
Much better places for you money, including Piper's Heath right across the street.
Disappointed with marshals
I had the opportunity to play the Royal Ontario Golf course in the past and had only good things to say about the experience. I was in a group of four and started about 10 minutes late due to slow play. We started our game at 7:10am and completed the course at 11:20am. I thought that this was a good pace but not according to the marshals patrolling the course. We had a slow group ahead of us but had no problem waiting a bit at a few holes. The marshals met up with us on multiple holes explaining that they were pushing the group ahead of us as well as all groups. We did not react and kept our pace. Starting off at the 10th hole we noticed that the group behind us were teeing off before we had a chance to clear the area. Balls were coming closer and closer to us. At one point, a ball missed our cart by a few yards when we were just starting to leave a putting green. It became evident that the marshals continued their push especially on the group behind us. We were almost hit again on the 18th hole at which point one of our four players decided that he was not interested in finishing the game, this player happened to be the best player in our group and was on hos way scoring below 80. When we confronted the marshals regarding the pace of play and wanted some answers, they simple said that they did not push the play time and simple ignored us. It is unfortunate that they did not take even take the time to carefully listen to our complaint or even apologize since it seemed quite obvious that the place was overbooked. Our group plays many courses in Ontario and we love nothing more than to recommend courses we played and had a great experience. Unfortunately the Royal Ontario did not meet our standards due to the constant pressure to play faster; we did not come to play golf as quickly as possible, we play golf to enjoy the surroundings and the company. All in all, very disappointed with the way we were treated after playing a good pace of just over 4 hours.
A Challenge
It is a challenging course as there is water on virtually every hole. We seemed to be hitting over water or fescue on almost every shot.
Royal Ontario
Great but difficult course fairways are narrow and water seems to be everywhere, friendly staff.
Terrible pace of play
Greens and tee decks were in bad condition. Nobody repairs their ball marks and the tee decks weren't cut.
Pace of play was embarrassing so we quit after 9!
Very nice golf course with a lot of challenge
Very nice golf course but the few things that can improve on it would be that people put their devotes back after eating and fixing dirt holes on the greens duress of their cars is excellent
Royal Ontario
This is a very good course, but not for your "weekend golfers". It has a unique combination of holes that require you to be long and accurate, combined with holes where you need to think your way through. It's not just a grip it and rip it type of course. The only criticism I have is, the drainage needs to be improved on hole number one. All in all, a great course to play.
