Cardinal Lakes Golf Club - Heron Course
About
The Heron Course is one of two 18-hole courses at Cardinal Lakes Golf Club. It is the club's newer championship layout, designed to complement the original course, the executive-length Sparrow. It is 6,765 yards from the back tees but it feels as though it is considerably longer since many holes play into the prevailing wind. The golf course combines elements of classic links, parkland, and Carolinian courses. The generous fairways are guarded by bunkers and the large, fast greens are gently contoured and surrounded by trees. Water is a prominent feature throughout, coming into play on all but four holes. The layout saved the most challenging for last with its signature 18th hole, a par 3 with a tricky island green.

Phenomenal conditions
I can't stress enough how amazing the greens were. It was like putting on a carpet. Overall condition of the course was fantastic.

Extremely friendly staff and course in fantastic shape. Casual atmosphere, but private course feel. Absolutely recommend.
This is a long course
Golfed the Heron. It is long (from white tees), a very good layout and in good condition. However, it is expensive and is considerably more expensive than other comparable courses in the Niagara region.
Overall the course has some nice long open holes with good greens and is a great value on GolfNow. However, we were disappointed that the day we played there was no beverage cart, especially since the course doesn't connect back to the clubhouse until the 18th hole. Bathroom facilities are minimal with only two port-a-potties and no running water, so if you are walking, make sure you come equipped with lots of water and a hat as shade trees and places to sit are also minimal.
The Heron at Cardinal Lakes
Course is in excellent condition and definitely worth the money. Quite a value. Challenging holes but easy to walk.
What a deal
We played the Sparrow a week or so ago and liked it, but the Heron was in great shape, interesting layout lots of challenges. Greens were quick, fairways in good shape. For the money this is the best deal in South Eastern Ontario
Decent value and an easy walk
I've played this course off and on for years and find there has been some degradation in the overall condition in the past several years. I find that the sand traps are especially inconsistent with very little sand over a bed of clay.
Good Value
A more challenging experience than it's Sparrow course. Longer in length, more challenging in layout and on windy day's no protection from the wind. Course is in good condition and the staff were very friendly from the pro shop to the starter. Price point is a bit high for the region at $45 weekdays and $50 on weekends walking.
$25 to walk...after 6pm...9 holes
I went to play a practice round, and chose to play later in the day so that I would not interfere with other golfers, but $25 for 9 holes, on this course?!? to walk ?!? at 6:00pm !!! I think someone in the pro-shop screwed up.
I was one of 4 golfers on the course at this time of day, so that is why Pace of Play is rated high. No idea what it's like during a weekend or normal hour.
Same course, different name. Bunkers had a 70/30 mix of sand and small rocks. Course layout is quirky, because the 9th/10th hole is nowhere near the clubhouse. No drinkable water on the course, so bring everything you'll need for 18 holes with you.
The highlights:
> no other golfers bothered me, because there were only 3 other guys out at this time of night
> the greens appeared to be in pretty good shape
> no rough to penalize bad shots
The low-lights:
> price for a 9 hole walking rate
> possible better training for ProShop staff
> bunkers need legitimate sand, and more of it
> course layout = need of coolers with drinkable water throughout the course
> get away from clubhouse and there is a huge Canadian Geese problem. their "droppings" are all over fairways and greens.
Bad layout, good course
Course has no water stations, and had no beverage cart out on a saturday afternoon. To top it off, the course doesn't even bring you back to the clubhouse after 9 holes. So on a hot day, we were nearing heatstroke by the time we finished, with no idea that we'd be in that position when we teed off. No signs, no warning from the proshop that there were no amenities to be had, nothing. A sizeable blemish on what would otherwise be a good course, there are some interesting holes. Greens could be better, but for the price it is good value. Value wouldn't be so good if you were forced to take a cart so you could take a cooler full of water, which is what we would probably do if we played again. Not sure whether I would go back.
Nice course
This is one of my favourite course, I grew up playing this course. This time out was my first time this year. I can't fault them on the poor conditions, the weather had been brutal and raining leading up to our round. So the grass was pretty long and clumps of grass were everywhere.
In our GolfNow purchase it said we would be given a cart, the older gentleman working the front desk refused to honour our purchased and did not want to take any money off and was pretty rude about it almost implying that it was my mistake. Of course, I didn't want to make a scene, so I accepted, called GolfNow support and they handled it as best as they can, went above and beyond helping me fix a problem that was not their problem. Thanks GolfNow.
This was right before Sparrow Lakes switched over to the now Cardinal Lakes, so I'm assuming they had other things on their mind.
This was a rare bad review on my part in regards to Cardinal Lakes, I'm sure it will be my last.
Course under foreclosure 5/19/17.
Don't expect to get in here too soon
