Cardinal Lakes Golf Club - Heron Course
About
The Heron Course is one of two 18-hole courses at Cardinal Lakes Golf Club. It is the club's newer championship layout, designed to complement the original course, the executive-length Sparrow. It is 6,765 yards from the back tees but it feels as though it is considerably longer since many holes play into the prevailing wind. The golf course combines elements of classic links, parkland, and Carolinian courses. The generous fairways are guarded by bunkers and the large, fast greens are gently contoured and surrounded by trees. Water is a prominent feature throughout, coming into play on all but four holes. The layout saved the most challenging for last with its signature 18th hole, a par 3 with a tricky island green.

Great Course
A really fun and somewhat challenging course, makes you think a little.
Take care of the small things
Course was in pretty good shape shape but they are not taking care of the details that make a course nice to play.
Weeds, and lack of trimming around objects tell me they don't care foe=r the small thing that make a facility look cared for.
Won't go back as it a bit out of the way and many better plays for the money.
Disappointed
Not a bad course for the average golfer but if you have more expectations 2 whole grains fire at pins not a course for you
condition vg
always fun to play
greens excellent
easy walk - no hills
please water the course
After a couple rounds at this course this year, I certainly will not be returning until at least next year. I have heard rumors that the course is up for sale again, and it seems like they are waiting till ownership change to water the course. You need a hammer just to put a tee in the ground on most tee boxes, and the fairways have large burnt/bare patches everywhere. At least it seems that they have still watered the greens, since they are the only good feature on the course right now. For a beautiful course like this, which is right by a river, to be in this condition is sad and embarrassing.
great course
Easy walking course. It was hot and humid but the beverage cart was around lots.
Great Layout.
unfortunately with the unusually dry conditions in the Niagara region. Sparrow Lakes is starting to look a little rough. I don't understand why they have not used thier many ponds to water. Ponds still look high.
Too many hazards
Too may hazards. Slow play from golfers searching for balls
great day
the golf was in suprisingly good shape ...the greens were awesome ...the beer cart was there when needed ..great day ....golfed on mens league day course was slow ....still enjoyable...got a ""hotdeal"" $26 golf cart taxes for 18 holes ,using a $10 reward ....will be back
Drought in the Area
We HAVE NOT had a significant amount of rain in a very long time. Even though this course has plenty of water hazards, AND is adjacent to a river, either they don't turn on the fairway sprinklers, or not frequently enough. At least the greens are being kept alive.
See picture of the fairway on #17 (which is located right next to a large pond, that did not appear depleted of any of its water.
That being said, I always enjoy coming here. It must be because it's convenient, the green fees are reasonable and you can't get yourself into too much trouble on this course. The rough is barely longer than the fairway.
Brutal slow rounds
Heron is a unique layout that my pals and I enjoy within the last handful of years but unfortunately; the pace of the last few rounds have been infuriating slow. Today the third group ahead of us were a good looking group but would of been more suited for the sparrow course skills wise. In all honesty, the staff is great and very friendly; hence no course Marshall but a 4.5 to 5 hours round is unacceptable. This wasn't the first time and unfortunately we have now decided to boycott sparrow lakes because of the brutal pace. Life's too short.
Heron Course
The course was VERY DRY. Greens where hard and didn't receive well. Members need to be more welcoming here. Seems like you aren't greeted with the warmest when a member discovers you aren't a member. Seems to be the way at a few courses in this area!!
In DIRE need of rain / water
We have had a very dry summer this year (2016), and it's showing. This course is located on The Welland River, has many water holes on the course, and yet it feels like someone is not turning on the sprinklers to water the course.
the greens are burning up.
the fairways are hard and crisp.
the rough is 1/2" long and dead. don't worry about missing a fairway, there is no penalty to hit from this stuff.
i either hope it rains soon and often, or that someone focuses on giving life to the grass at this property.
This course has a great layout and friendly staff!
Course is usually in better shape but they had issues with water supply.
Great course
It was a great morning of golf with friends.
18 Holes for the price of a large bucket!
Overall, great value for the money. Enjoyed excellent conditions on the greens and tees, decent fairways and mediocre bunkers.. Layout is flat and a bit bland. There is OB left on just about every hole on the front nine. Geese everywhere, so lots of "loose impediments". Pace of play was great until we caught up to a fivesome on the back nine. Didn't use the clubhouse or F&B facilities although the drink cart was out and visited our group every 4-5 holes or so.
There is a big range and practice green although I didn't have a chance to use them.
Don't plan your trip around it, but worth a visit for a good value round if in the area.
Stay out of the water!
I golf this course regularly and enjoy it each time. I still find The Heron a challenge especially if you don't hit the ball particularly long. Water comes into play on more than half of the holes so keep it straight off the tees. Greens are quite large and roll pretty straight in comparison to The Sparrow across the street which tends to have more undulation.
Great Local Course
I play this course regularly and it doesn't disappoint. The greens are in great shape, the course is fairly forgiving (you can miss a FW by 10 yds and still find your ball most times), the ProShop staff are top-notch, and if like to practice, this is a hidden gem. Large putting green, large range. The one reservation I have for Sparrow Lakes, is although they have a practice bunker, there isn't more than 1/4" of sand in it, before you're down to solid ground. I'd love to see a new load of sand be brought in, and this play would be the BEST VALUE FOR YOUR BUCK within a :45 minute drive.
Pass on renting a cart, and walk this flat course, get some exercise, and enjoy the peace and quiet of this part of the area. Nature is always around you.
Good value!
It was my first time to play here, but I don't hesitate to recommend this links (The Heron) for its good value. The greens were firm and neat, the overall layout was good, but the fairways were kind of too thin. Another funny thing was a "shared green" by which I mean a long, single green with two holes. First-time players should be cautious at Hole 2. If you see other players around your green, they're actually putting on that shared green.
What a challenging golf course!
I played from the whites. I was surprised to see that the WHITE tees plays more difficult than the Blue tees from a SLOPE perspective. Really? Ok, I played from the whites and managed to shoot 77. This was on sanded/air-rated greens which weren't running true. I loved the course, a whole lot of risk reward and built in difficulty that puts a PREMIUM on controlling the flight of your ball. #17 I had no idea that there was a ditch down on the LH side that awaits your 2nd shot. Wow was I glad that I kept it fairly straight and walked away with a Par. I loved the course, I will be back for sure. OHHH, and I failed to say that my neighbor got a HOLE in ONE on #12 using a HYBRID from 155. It was so cool to see someone get a HOLE in ONE. I followed it up with a 2 and my other neighbor shot a 4..too bad it would have been 1,2,3. Thanks for a great day!
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
I just got back from playing 18 on the Heron course. The course is still very dry. I guess the rumor is that there was a problem with the pump for the sprinkler system, but it has since been fixed. I hope that a few weeks of good watering will restore this course to it's great condition. Only time will tell.
