Ford's Colony Country Club - Blue Heron Course

Great to be back at FC, we own timeshare here and love it. Course was best I've played this year or any other..

Fairways in excellent shape. Greens were pristine.

Really enjoyed food at pub afterwards..

BLACKHEATH: Haven't played this course in close to 12 years and trying to play each course in Ford's Colony over the next couple of months when I'm in Williamsburg. Blackheath is in PRISTINE condition--one of the best courses from tee to green I've played all year (and this was my 80th round in 2021). Even the tees are in perfect shape. The fairways are thick and lush and the best I've played on this year. The rough was also thick, but not overly long so very playable. The greens were beautiful, with subtle breaks, and ran smooth and pure. The only thing questionable were some of the bunkers--but in fairness to Ford's Colony, we had T-storms for five hours last night and the bunkers weren't all that bad considering. (I was in a couple and there was no standing water and were certainly playable.) Given all the rain, I was surprised with 90 degrees for the carts today, but the course drains very well and there were very few wet spots. This course is superb. It is beautifully manicured, has some picturesque holes, lots of magnificent houses along the fairways, water on 13 of the holes, and enough penalty and environmental to get your attention. It's not overly hard, but a nice challenge. You need to hit the fairways or you will get in trouble fast. What a wonderful round today! it's nice to play a course that is well taken care of!

After a very heavy rain day on Saturday we expected the course to be very wet. We played Marsh Hawk. Many bunkers were full of water and were not playable and were not able to recover golf balls in them. There were some low drainage areas that were mushy. Having said that, the fairways were lush and we were getting roll which was great considering the day before rain. The greens were not overly soft but were receptive. The rough was not terrible though some areas were a bit thick and gave some penalty as they should. The driving range was open but the mats need to be replaced. I don't think I have ever seen the grass open on the main range. Putting greens were in great shape. With few exceptions, the course and amenities were in great shape. We normally partake in the great bar and restaurant but since discovering 2 Drummers smokehouse, that has been our go to after golf.

Unfortunately fords colony is the most stereotypical country club golf course I’ve ever played. Members and staff are the most uppity people I’ve come across. Members play a very poor pace of play and didn’t let us play through, then proceeded to tell the Ranger that we were hitting into them (which we were not). We had to wait more than 5 minutes for every shot and we had a 9:00 tee time with no one in front of the members, but remember they wouldn’t let us play through. I won’t play there again but I’m sure the country club doesn’t care.

We played Blue Heron, one of three courses at Fords Colony and it was great. Perfect conditions all arounf, great pace of play and the food in the grill is amazing! Can't go wrong here at all and all the staff are wonderful.

We played Marsh Hawk today, one of three really nice courses at Fords Colony. Excellent condition and the pace of play was amazing. We'll be back for sure!

The course was in excellent condition. I would definitely recommend playing this course.

Course held up very well from the rain storm the night before. Loved the layout, course played very and fun.

Course was great, and the check-in staff was fantastic and friendly. Only wish it gave the non-members the option to walk instead of ride only especially since it was cart path only due to the amount or rain. Greens showed some areas that needed to be re-done along with the bunkers were "clay" and price is pretty high at $85 per-person with no discounts available. Overall though the course was fun and challenging. I would recommend, play early though and get out before the members whom get to walk get out there. We were the first off the tee so we didn't have to wait at all, which was nice.

We were greeted by a friendly staff at 8am for a 830 tee time. Course had a very nice layout. My friend and I played from the blues (course wasn’t that long). Bunkers were pretty flooded/wet in the morning. They’d probably dry out later in the day. The fairways and tee boxes were nice and level. The greens were not as smooth as other courses around. There were some dry spots and weeds. We had a foursome in front and a foursome behind us. Round took 4 hours. Staff was constantly driving around to see if we needed any water or ice. I would play the course again!

It's just been a long time since I've tried any of the Ford's Colony courses and was able to get onto Marsh Hawk. It was in great shape with the fairways cut tight and the rough not too punishing. The staff was extremely helpful and welcoming, and seemed to want to make sure we enjoyed our time at Ford's Colony. The only reason I gave it a 4 vs 5 star rating was because some of the bunkers were full of water, others were more dirt than sand, but yet others had nice sand...so in a nutshell they were very inconsistent. Additionally, we followed a 9-hole league and a foursome of older members walking and it was a tad slow. The marshal came around twice to apologize, but didn't want to "take on" the members by asking them to pick up the pace. I can certainly understand that, so we just enjoyed the day while we waited. There were some interesting holes and plenty of tees to choose from--with two sets of blended tees. I didn't remember very many holes, but enjoyed the day and the course. We will be back and will try the other two.
