#5 approach shot. Cool shot with the mountain in the background. Photo submitted by ryantjeerdsma on 09/24/2013
Not worth the money
Such a sad course. We played two other courses so far on this vacation, and both were $50 per person less than this one. Greens were scalped in many locations at McDowell Mountain. Fairways were also patchy in spots. This is “high season.” Guess for this course means charge high, deliver a sub-par product.
Save your money
This course had a good reputation but the reality is the fairways are in terrible shape, 40% or more dirt, and forget hitting your ball out of the traps. They were cement. I actually tried to break up the hard surface around my ball but it was hard pan. Not that difficult to have maintenance rake and add new sand. Very disappointed especially for $125 round.. They are booking 400 rounds per day on both courses so I don’t think they will bother spending money on improvements. New to area and avid golfers Save your money and skip this course They are relying on their past reputation. Staff was great.
A Layout That Needs Some Love
My buddy Ralph and I played here for the first time with much anticipation. He was a bit foreboding when you use the range, short game are and practice greens, as they are in poor condition. The rest of the course is maintained alright but not great. The 9th fairway may need to be blown up and redone totally. The design of the holes are unique and very clever given the unusual piece of land the course sits on. I think the holes offer challenges, but are also very fair. Pace of play was just under 2 hours on the front, but things jammed up on the back and we played that in 2:20. I would love to play this course again after Troon Golf moves forward with the much needed renovations and repairs. Give it a try!
Good time
Everything was great with the exception of the practice facility.
Nice views
Decent course. Greens were beat up but ok. Pace was slow but it was Saturday and busy. Will play again if the price is right.
McDowell Mountain in peak season
I like the layout of the course and level of difficulty as an 8 handicap. I/we were all extremely surprised to see the poor level of shape the course is in especially at peak season. Other equally priced courses in this area are in far better shape (greens, fairways, traps, range and practice facility). For the price of play this course should be in exponentially better shape. Not sure how Phil can be happy to have his brand all over this course right now. Pace of play was good, finishing in just over 4 hours. Rangers and attendants are all quite nice and helpful.

So not worth the price point. Should have been a third of the price. 50 bucks would be a fare price. Greens were in poor condition and course is kind of mangy with standing water and dried out areas. Power lines run through the middle of the course. Club house is nice and staff is friendly
Very poor course conditions, especially considering the highest price I've ever paid to play here. Dead fairways, rough greens and several wet areas due to faulty irrigation. I've been coming here for 10 years and quite disappointed.
Hidden Gem!
I played McDowell Mtn for the second time yesterday on 12/10. It was a little rainy in the morning but the course was still in good shape. The greens drained really well and still rolled true. Each staff member we dealt with was unbelievable and truly wanted us to have a great time. The outdoor lounging area looked amazing to relax and enjoy the Arizona weather throughout the year. I highly recommend going to see for yourself!
Nice course
I like this course as it is few mins from my place. After overseeing the course looks great and greens rolls true speed. We were backed up on most of the holes on back nine and took 4 hrs and 35 mins to finish the round. Course lay out is fine and some holes with narrow fairways. Practice range is also nice but it was full today and couldn’t find a spot for 10 mins. Short game and putting green is well maintained. Drink cart came frequently and offered various food and drink options.
Overall, staff is friendly and the restaurant is nice but offers very limited vegetarian options. I would recommend this course to play throughout the year.
Slow play
Sure, cart path only slows the play a little. But, very close to a 5 hour round on a very warm day is uncomfortable. Rangers on the course make no effort to speed up slow play. For over $100, it isn’t worth the experience.
Great day, played in less than 4 hours , dower was the greens were slower than shag carpet and cartpath only meant you had to guess every yardage
